It's dense and tough to get through, and I have to read this book very slowly in order to absorb what it's saying. This was a required book for the class I'm taking now in library school. Much of what I have read in this book so far reiterates what can be found in RDA, but it's not helpful for making anything clearer.
I ordered this book for a class and the book came on time. I love this book. This book teaches librarians how to catalog anything using the RDA, MARC, and other metadata formats used by cultural heritage centers. It also teaches the different call number systems like Dewey Decimal System and LOC.

I rented this book. It arrived in very good shape. It's not as interesting as I thought it would be but it's a required textbook.
Good reading textbook. Not too dry. Book came in new condition and on time!
This is a well written and extremely comprehensive text covering both descriptive and subject cataloging.
I think this book should really be two textbooks instead of one. One book might be called History and Controversies in Cataloging and Classification: Current and Past and the other by its present title and that one would be more of the practical reference learning manual that students new to this field might need. It's too paragraph driven for a handbook/manual. I find that when I need to get to the meat of doing an assignment for a class that I'm enrolled in now that this book serves as a discourager rather than an encourager. Often I end up consulting other sources out on the web and in library blogs rather than this textbook.

This is a good, compact book for those interested in a "crash course" on black history and politics. This collection represents well the issues of slavery and racial inequality, and the African American's struggle for equal justice and opportunity. I strongly recommend it for those interested in race, politics, and justice. Some themes of religion are also present throughout. A short volume of this size cannot possibly do justice to the whole of African American tradition; the selections by women are few (but present), the representation of slavery and slave issues is very heavy, and arts, culture and literature is omitted, but speeches do tend to be political and so this book remains true to that theme. I could see this book being very useful for a course on race and political justice. On the whole a good read.
Gave these to guests at a get-together I hosted. Great hostess gift too. Give with flowers or wine when you are invited to a dinner or party in someone's home. Everyone is pleasantly surprised to receive--not something people might normally purchase.
I am interested in learning more about the civil rights movement. I wasn't sure where to start. Basic history... Important figures... I mean, it's a huge subject. So, I was cruising through Amazon and came across this book. PERFECT solution.This book covers a lot of speeches by a lot of people. I was very very pleased by it. It accomplished exactly what I wanted it to. It gave me an evolution of thought with historical references. It is also a "Who's Who" of the civil rights movement.My only complaint is that it included a speech by our current president. It was totally out of place in this book.I gave this book 4 stars only because I reserve 5 stars for books that are really REALLY outstanding. No demerits here.

This past April I visted Douglas house in Baltimore so I'm glad I read this book and the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass. The guide for the tour of the home was very informative about some the events in his life.

The book was really good but the print was really small so it took me a while to read it.
I could not put this book down, I started to read and every chance I got I picked it up. Latashia definitely did her thing, total Masterpiece and I can't wait to read Volume 2 because "Made U Look" is going to be a best seller. After learning who the characters were and the roles they play, your imagination is going to go wild while slipping through each page. And the ending... OMG!
The book is certainly interesting and captivating. It's a ghetto love story consisting of the usual sex, drugs, guns and tons of infidelity. There are several scandalous scenes that will leave you in total shock Overall, I think it's a decent read. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars despite the grammatical errors and misuse of punctuation.

I really enjoy historical fiction and have read a number of books that depict life during WW 2 and WW 1. This book describes the care of nurses and their volunteer helpers for the severely injured soldiers in France during WWi. The author also described the life of a current day nurse and wove the 2 stories together always letting the reader know which person she was writing about.What this book greatly needs is editorial help. Sentences start in one direction then go in another direction without erasing the words from the first attempt at writing the sentence. The punctuation is often poor. In particular, there are many commas that are not needed. In one chapter the names of the 2 leading men were mixed up. I read the book on a Kindle so don't know if that makes a difference. I don't know if the book was also published in paper form but can attest to the fact that the electronic form needs editorial help.
What a lovely book. It tells about the atrocities of war, how love can happen during hard times, about loss and how the human spirit can survive even through the most horrific events. Although this book comes full circle and has a happy ending, it is by far more than a simple love story. The author says it best "Damon all wars, separating families and loved ones, causing men and women's lives to change beyond all recognition. It was all wrong" (and is).
The Poppy Fields is by Deborah Carr. This book mainly takes place in France during World War I. It mainly takes place at a forward transition center where doctors and nurses care for the wounded soldiers. The Sisters (Nuns) make up the nursing staff and are helped by volunteers from France and England. These young girls have volunteered to do their best for the cause and were uprooted from their homes to come to France. Here they live under very strict rules of conduct and even their letters are read by the Matron before being given to them. Letters are generally permitted only from family members. They are not to interact with the patients nor grow too close to them. They are constantly watched by the Sisters. Still, they manage make friends. It also takes place in the present when Gemma takes a leave from her job as a nurse and comes to the cottage owned by her Father to renovate it and get it ready to sell. It had belonged to her Father’s cousin whose Mother had been a nurse in the area years before.Gemma needed a rest from her job as a trauma nurse. She needed to decide which direction her life would take upon her return. She was used to being alone so the isolation of the small farm didn’t bother her. Her parents were professionals and her birth was “an accidentâ€. She saw her parents rarely when she was growing up and although they cared for her, it was almost an afterthought. However, when she needed a place to go, her Father gave her the responsibility of getting the unseen farm renovated and read for the market. She needed someone to do the heavy work and hired Tom, an Englishman who had moved here. He was willing and able to help her between his other jobs and his price was fair. During the time she renovates the house and outbuildings, Tom is usually the only one she talks to. She finds a metal box of letters that belonged to her ancestor, Alice Le Breton. Alice had written them to Lieutenant Peter Conway and Captain Edgar Woodhall. Who were these men? Why was she writing to both of them? What was her life like? What happened to her? Gemma had many questions and the only possibility of answers was in the letters.Alice Le Breton’s life in France is revealed via these letters with their notes on the backs. A young girl from the island of Jersey, she had set out to be a volunteer nurse and go where she was needed. She ended up in a transition camp in France to help the wounded get their best shot at surviving. She and her friend Mary work long hours helping the wounded; but they are the first to grow attached to their patients. Only sorrow can come from being attached to their patients or to the doctors, so they try to steer clear of those attachments. But can they?The book is very good and gives a very clear account of what life in the hospitals could have been during the war. The opposition of what it is like in the hospital to what it is like at the farm is the best I have heard in a while.
This story wasn't a TOTAL waste, it was short and sweet, but it was like a Hallmark/ Lifetime movie all wrapped into one. Very predictable. Damaged woman moves to rural area to fix up a dilapidated property and "find herself" after an as-of-yet undescribed tragedy. On her first trip to the hardware store she meets a (gasp!) handsome man who is only too happy to help with her remodel. Sparks fly, they both play dumb, lots of superficial self-questioning (am I ready for this? I need to heal! But his NAVY BLUE EYES. Swoon!) Wouldn't recommend, unless you're looking for an easy beach read that requires zero brainpower.
I had to give this book five stars because it was great! I fell in love with the characters. It was such a romantic yet heart breaking story with the war going on. This one is a must read!
So enjoyable - could not put it down, tears and fun - the story took you with it as though you too could experience all the revelations. Lends itself to a sequel!
Two women, both nurses, separated by a hundred years but with so very much in common - especially the trauma of dealing with young lives cut much too short. As Gemma struggles to come to terms with the loss of a love, she immerses herself in revamping an old cottage in the French countryside. It's there that she discovers a treasure trove of letters written by Alice, a nurse in WWI. The more she works - & reads - the more she learns about life & about herself, including whether the handsome young builder who's helping her has any place in her future.. Some annoying lapses in editing & continuity do not distract too much from what is a sweet & absorbing story.
A good read of historical fiction . Two time periods were brought together. At times,I did not want to stop reading. I would recommend this story for readers who want to experience nursing during war time or WWi period.
