The Glass Universe meticulously delineates the previously little-known story about the contributions of a group of women hired by the Harvard College Observatory as “human computers†beginning in the mid-1800’s. While Dava Sobel at times employs incredible scientific detail while relaying these women’s stories, overall The Glass Universe is a fascinating tale of the impact of a multitude of female astronomers on the field of astronomy. As the story develops, photography begins revolutionizing the field of astronomy creating a new field called spectrophotography. Accordingly, a number of these women begin studying the thousands of glass photographic plates created nightly at the observatory in Cambridge and at times from other areas including Peru and South Africa. The images created via photography magnified the views of the cosmos to degrees far beyond what the naked eye could see even with a telescope. As a result, the women (and some men too) discovered thousands of new stars, learned what stars are composed of, and characterized stars into groupings with similar traits. Sobel also pays tribute to the individuals who funded much of this research including Anna Draper whose husband was on the forefront of spectrophotography and sadly died young, Andrew Carnegie and Catherine Bruce, a wealthy New York socialite who came to love astronomy late in life.Because so many women participated in the development of a new understanding of the cosmos, there are a tremendous number of characters in The Glass Universe. Repeatedly while reading, I kept wishing that there was a character listing at the front of the book to help me keep track of them all. When I finished the book, I was happy to ascertain that Sovel had compiled a lengthy Catalogue of Harvard Astronomers, Assistants, and Associates at the end of the book. While it was helpful to peruse this after finishing The Glass Universe, I feel it would have been more useful at the front of the book instead of after I was finished reading. At the end of the book, Sobel also includes a timeline with the highlights of the Harvard College Observatory which places many of the developments and discoveries into a coherent, satisfying format.Sobel’s story is uplifting, and I loved reading about the recognition these women received at a time when women working was highly uncommon. Not only did their fellow workers at Harvard Observatory acknowledge the success and importance of these individuals, but astronomers worldwide respected and recognized the contributions made by them. I highly recommend The Glass Universe. Thanks to Viking Books and NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Pickering and Harlow Shapley, whilenot neglecting their male contemporaries. Between the 1880s and 1910s, Harvard CollegeObservatory under Pickering arguably contributed more to the advance of astronomy than anyother single institution. By 1920 the telescopes of HCO began to be dwarfed by new large instrumentsat other institutions, but under Shapley HCO remained at the forefront of astronomical researchand education in many areas. During these years, Henrietta Leavitt discovered the Cepheid period-luminosityrelation that would be vital to determining the distances to other galaxies, Annie Jump Cannon studied the spectraof hundreds of thousands of stars, and Cecilia Payne pioneered methods for determining the chemicalcomposition of the stars. These and other stories are followed in Sobel's fascinating work.Sobel also writes of the lives and motivations of the wealthy sponsors of the observatory'sresearch, including scientifically minded women such as Anna Palmer Draper and Catherine WolfeBruce. Considering the breadth of the book, I noticed remarkably few errors, and I stronglyrecommend its story of the people of HCO and their science.
I was hoping for more from this book considering it was a 2017 New York Times Notable book than what I got. The book does describe the contributions of the many women who worked at the Harvard Observatory from the late 1800s to the early 1950s. Those contributions were significant. (Even though they were grossly underpaid for what sure seems like scut work to me.) And it was nice to see women get an opportunity in a technical field during that era. So, yes, Sobel does a good job of describing their contributions. But her narrative is on the dry side. I'm a big astronomy fan so I liked this book. But I think if you are coming at this book from the "women in science" viewpoint rather than from the science viewpoint, you're going to find this history a little tedious. Recommended for science and astronomy buffs. Recommended with reservations (for the dry narrative) for others.
This well researched book came as a revelation to me about the many women to whom we owe our modern understanding of astronomy. Dava Sobel makes the individual women and men come alive on the page. She also writes so that the lay person gains a sense of the way discoveries were made and why they were important.

This book is a delight to read and it was my second time reading it (the first was during jury duty back in February 2007). Some chapters get pretty deep in programming, so I just skimmed over those. Mostly focuses on the Windows 95 and 3.1 era with a little 2000 and XP thrown in. Basically, this is the book form of Chen's blog "The Old New Thing" with more stories and more details.One thing that is kind of annoying is the downloadable bonus chapters. The author gives a link to download bonus chapters in the preface. This link goes to informit.com with another link to safari.com. Even after registering the ISBN number on informit.com, it would link me into safari.com and safari.com won't let me look at bonus chapters unless I sign up for a 10 day trial. Of course, they want a credit card number. Why? I already bought the book, so I cancelled out the trial setup and did a little Google searching and found the bonus chapters in PDF format over at the Pearson site.I went to Chen's blog to contact him about this, but there's no e-mail address in site and no comment box to leave a message. On the blog postings where he mentions the bonus chapters, I was going to leave a comment, but the comments are now closed (too much time has passed I guess). Why can't he post these bonus chapters on his web site? The second chapter is just a reprint of something he wrote in the MS-DOS days. I don't get it!
I recommend this to anyone who's interested in computers because it highlights some of the least visible things that major software developers face. If you ever wondered why Windows does something illogical, chances are Raymond Chen has an explanation why that is. If not, the very least you can find so many things that the Microsoft development team had to put up with to appease their customers that for me imparted a better appreciation for what them and other OS developers have to deal with.
As a long-time reader of Raymond Chen's blog, The Old New Thing, I was quite excited to see that he had put out a book. After reading it, I'm pleased to say that Chen's acerbic style shines through in this book as well.This book is an excellent tour through the history of Windows development. It does a good job explaining why parts of Windows are as quirky as they are, and what limitations and design decisions led to them being that way.The book's style varies from chapter to chapter. Some chapters are collections of short essays and observations, similar in length and style to Old New Thing blog posts. (Some, in fact, are expanded versions of topics already posted on the blog.) Other chapters are more in-depth looks at a single topic - for example, there is a whole chapter dedicated to the workings of the Windows dialog manager. Many topics in this book would be of interest to a non-technical audience, while others are only of interest to Windows programmers. (There's a table in the introduction that does a good job identifying what audiences would like each chapter.)All in all, if you're a fan of The Old New Thing, this is a no-brainer. If you'd like to see some of the history of Windows, and how design decisions made back when 640K was enough for everyone continue to affect Windows now, then give this a read. Or, if you'd just like to marvel at the number of ways people have screwed up writing Windows programs, and the Herculean efforts of Microsoft engineers to keep their broken code running - pick this book up today.
I like this book. Even all these years later the ideas I've read from this book so far are relevant. The story, process, and reasons behind how windows works is important and highly relevant today even if, like me, you're but a feeble full stack developer
The book is the history behind the design of Windows in various aspects, from user interface (Why is shut down on the Start menu) to API (Why does the GetWindowText function behave so strangely). If you write and breath Windows programming, this book will be interesting historical read, but not for general programmers.
Raymond has as good an insight as anyone (well, ALMOST anyone) into the history of Windows and the reasoning behind why things are the way they are. This is a fascinating read not just for programmers but for anyone interested in the difficulties of backwards compatibility, the clever solutions required to work in a multitude of different environments, and just some of the more interesting parts of Windows history.
As a windows programmer, I loved reading all of his essays and going back to see the design philosophy or the psudo code for a bunch of the windows functions. Fantastic read.Warning: It gets fairly technical the farther you get.
Fun, technical and very insightful on how serious, highly professional, and big-scale software development is in reality. Maximum respect to the Microsoft engineers that crafted Windows in the last 25+ years.Note that this is not an essay, it's quite leaned to C / C++ Windows programmers; however , all IT people could learn a lot from this book.

Now I can read the bible without straining my eyes.
Love this Bible! It has big print so you can read it well. I would definitely recommend getting this if you need a large print Bible. I love the fact that it also has Jesus' words in red letters!
Wow! Just what I needed. With my eyes growing older, this Book hits the mark. I've read other Bible versions other than NIV, but I've found myself preferring the NIV. All I needed was a quality Book with "Giant" print. This NIV is spot on, double columns, giant print, Words of Christ in red, a good quality "feel" and I can use a Sharpie Gel highlighter without it "bleeding" through. I made one heavy handed highlight on one sentence to test and it did not show through on the other side of the page. So the pages have adequate thickness for me.So, if you prefer the NIV and your eyes are aging like mine, you should be very happy with the purchase of this Book. I could not be happier with this purchase myself.
I was a little hesitant about getting this after reading some of the negative reviews, but I very glad I took a chance, and bought it anyway. It came today, and I'm very happy with the bible. The print is huge, just what I was looking for. It is very well put together, and I found no problems with the binding or the paper. I'm also happy with the cover material. This is not a bible you will want to bring with you to church. It's very large and quite heavy. Excellent for reading and study at home.
My husband, age 90, has macular degeneration and reads the Bible through every year. He uses a Kindle, and also has a hard copy Bible that he read with a magnifying glass, so we thought we'd try this extra large print Bible. He absolutely loves it! Hallelujah! I knew Zondervan could do it! As the grateful recipient of review copies for many wonderful editions of the Bible published by Zondervan, I've complained with increasing audio about the thinly inked, attractive but almost illegible font the company constantly uses. So I went online and found this edition with a 14-point font that can actually be seen and, therefore, read with one exception. For some unfathomable reason, the "Harmony of Gospels" section in the back matter suddenly reverted to a tiny font (maybe 4-point?) Since a larger font obviously wouldn't align well, I can't help but wonder why those pages were even included in an edition that focuses on readers whose eyes don't focus. Otherwise, this edition makes a nice choice for those of us who want a reader's edition we can actually read.Besides the highly readable font, the "Introductions to the Books of the Bible" section in the back matter makes a nice addition. Also in the back pages, the sparse "Dictionary/Concordance" might have been omitted, but a page for the "Miracles of Jesus' is helpful to have handy as is the "Perspectives From The Bible" with topics and scriptures to look up and read, read, read on important subjects in God's Word.

I ordered this Bible on December 11th and had it in my hands on December 20th. That is excellent considering I live in Bermuda and anything I order is first delivered to an address in NY, USA, and then forwarded to me here. So I was very pleased with the delivery time.As for the Bible itself, I like it. The lettering is at 16.5 point print, which is super giant as advertised.But know also that the Bible itself is LARGE and will not fit into an average Bible case/cover bag.There are only two things that kept me from giving this Bible five stars.1.) The pages are extremely thin and a lot of them are stuck together at the edges, so that I have to tear them apart to separate them. So far this hasn't damaged any of the pages but the chance of that happening is there.2.) I'm not a fan of the two-tone colored cover ... and the cover feels like it is made of rubber. Thankfully, I bought this Bible for the contents on the inside and not for its cover, but still .... it just doesn't "feel" like a Bible to me.However, the pages are why I took away a star and not the cover because the description clearly stated this was not a leather or an imitation leather cover.I would still recommend this Bible though. In my opinion, it is worth its price and a nice 'house' Bible to keep laying around.
Poor quality. PRINT size is great but the pages are not even and a few stick out at the end. Could not contact seller could only return. This was a gift for an elderly person and this did not make a nice gift due to the poor binding quality.

Let me start by saying I have been an Amazon customer for twenty years and I have *never* reviewed anything before. But I consider this book to important for me to keep my mouth shut. It was a life-changer for me. Don't know why some reviewers are saying it is not helpful for people with severe depression - maybe some people with severe depression need a different approach, but let me speak for the rest of us. I was having suicidal thoughts, and on the highest doses of meds available. I was also in therapy. I tried two different therapists, both of whom wanted to talk about other people in my life - my parents, my husband, etc. - which was not helping me at all. I was at my wit's end, really scared that I was going to hurt myself if things didn't get better soon, when a friend recommended this book. You have to do the exercises - yes, they seem silly, but if they work, who the heck cares? Get a nice little notebook and a pen that you enjoy writing with. I made mine a sort of journal that I doodled in and added little inspirational quotes here and there. And yes, it is deceptively simple. Again, who cares? If standing on my head and whistling "Dixie" would have made me feel this much better, I'd be doing that, too. I started reading the book a month ago. I do not do all the excercises, but I did try all of them. I do what works for me. It's also true that there is the usual filler crap that you get in self-help books "Janet is a 40-year old dental assistant who came to me in 2005 suffering from..." blah, blah, blah. Just skip it. My depression is so much better that I am shocked. I am no longer thinking about suicide, and I am actually able to picture a future that is not completely empty and black. A future!!!!!! I have not had a future in years! I can't express what that means to me, but if you have depression, I don't have to. Try the book. If it doesn't work, I hope you will try something else, and keep on trying. You are not alone, and you deserve to be happy.
The ideas in this book are so simple, yet so powerful. We all have an inner voice (the Buddhists call it "monkey mind") that creates thoughts in our brain. These thoughts then make us feel a certain way. In knowing that our thoughts create how we feel, we can drastically improve the quality of our lives.This book shows that it's not what happens to us in life, it's what we think about it.For example, say you lose your job. Many people would then catastrophize and think negative thoughts about how awful it was, how we're going to be homeless and go broke and then we get depressed. Instead of thinking like that, we should think realistically about how it's tough that we lost our jobs, but we'll eventually find another one and that we will overcome the current crisis.I was a pessimist for years. Negative thinking becomes a habit and changes brain chemistry. By thinking more realistically and talking back to our negative thoughts, we can live much happier lives.
Once you start reading this book, you will start to feel better. If you suffer with depression, this book is better than any prescription I have tried.It deals with the here and now, and teaches you how to understand your own negative contribution to your depression, and it gives you several tools with which you can assess where you are at, how you talk to yourself, how you interpret others, and how to regain control over that narrative.Best book that I have ever read. It made a difference just reading, but much more so by using the knowledge and tools that Dr. Burns provides in the book. I bought copies for friends and family who have also had learned how to feel better and even feel good.I would give it 6 stars if I could
I was fortunate to learn that the author was trained at my alma-mater, and it gave me the initial faith to read this book and do the work inside. This is university tested and developed Cognitive Behavior Therapy made available to anyone, it's success has been documented in over 40,000 patients in double-blind peer-reviewed studies. It changed my life. For 15 years I WAS anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications, after reading this book, and doing the Cognitive Behavior Therapy exercises, I was able to wean myself off meds completely.
Unfortunately, I've had to grapple with anxiety and depression most of my life. But you work with the hand you were dealt, am I right?On top of meds and therapy, I've amassed quite a collection of self-help books, some better than others. I try to be proactive in dealing with my business; I feel that's super important in helping deal with mental and emotional problems. For anxiety, I've found that books on mindfulness meditation to be quite helpful. For depression, stuff that emphasizes CBT is effective.That's why I like this book. It's written well, although some bits seem a bit dated (an example in the book of something that might irritate you is when you use your last dime at a payphone and the call drops and you don't get your money back. Little things like that pop up here and there in the book, but don't detract from the important things).I use some of the exercises in this book with a therapist which is helpful. There are exercises where the author asks you to write out things instead of mentally reviewing things. I agree with that recommendation. It helps solidify concepts and organize your thoughts.The book is written well, and in a conversational way. I found there were many times the author explained something that made me say 'Yeah, that's me! If I'm being honest, that's how I think and what it really means!'Hopefully you'll like it. Do the exercises, be honest in the exercises, and if you see a therapist try working through this stuff with them. My therapist knew who this author was right away and was familiar with his work.It's one of the few books like this that I own that I go back and review periodically.

This is a great book.
In great condition!
My access code never worked, I emailed the company and asked for a refund. I never got a response back.
This book is extremely cheaply made. The binding is already showing wear after less than 3 months of use. It looks as though they have simply printed an online book because some of the text runs right up to the edges of the pages, and it's not even in color. Pages are thin and highlighter immediately bleeds through. All that might be overlooked if the text itself were good, but I find it a little hard to trust because I have found several typos and factual mistakes in many of the tables and figures. This book will not be a good reference for future as I hardly know if it will survive the semester. Yes I am a broke college student but I would prefer spending more money on a better quality book that will last as a good reference.
Awesomw read
One of the best textbooks I have used in my SLP studies. The author writes in an engaging voice that keeps me interested in even the most technical details. Very comprehensive and backed up by lots of research and citations. A solid text that I will keep in my library for years. The tables and case studies that are highlighted helped me to greatly understand the articulatory vs phonological differences.The looseleaf version is slightly more difficult to use but I appreciated the lower price. I only had the cover page tear off the 3 ring binder so no real issues there.
One of the most thorough books I've used in my program so far. Full of TONS of information on tests, diagnostics, treatment and typical development. Fairly easy to understand. I'm holding onto this for future reference!
I prefer this to my undergraduate texts. Definitely one to keep as a reference and use for Praxis review.
