This family values excellence. They demonstrate gratitude for opportunities to work, they actually enjoy working. They (mostly) show each other patience, appreciation and respect; they help others; they offer grace to those who are different, and they give 2nd chances: even when undeserved.The book is written in the “voice†of a 10-year-old child. However, the vocabulary and thinking sound very adult-like. I viewed this component in a more tongue-in-cheek manner, which added to the humorous, self-deprecating nature of the book from my perspective. I liked this story and I like this family very much!
This book is written in the voice of a 5th grade student through his diary. An accounting of discord with a family and their foreign neighbors. The conflict affects the kids, the neighborhood, the kids schools. Interesting how various persons took and decided on whom they would believe and how they would react. Noteworthy in the fact that as the family stuck together, using all their good morals and judgements, it made them closer and stronger than they were when the story opened. I enjoyed the 10 year-olds responses to what was going on and was surprised at the ending of the story. I’m not sure that another child in school could be convinced to read this and/or enjoy it.
A very entertaining book with a nice twist at the ends. Definitly a good read for a middle school student. I would also recommend this book for adult ESL learners. It is easy and interesting and it has a lot of details about the American culture and the life style. It would be a useful read for all newcomers to America. Even it is a fiction book it has a lot of real life information.
I really wanted to like this book. I struggled to understand why the story was told from the perspective of a child. A child wouldn't understand or care about the drama going on between adult friends.
Story based on true events told with great imagination!
This book was an easy read. It was interesting that all the events are from the point of view of a child. It was an ok book.
