Review

“A honest and at times, raw, account of one man's journey through personal ‘disaster’, this book will be a helpmate to anyone facing similar experiences - whether as the person experiencing disaster or those who are walking alongside them." —David Adams, Sight “What a script: The head of a disaster institute, who trains others on emergency response, discovers he has Stage 4 cancer, putting to the test everything he has taught. Jaime Aten blends together what he has learned from disasters, both large and small, and offers practical suggestions that can equip all of us to prepare for our personal trials.” —Philip Yancey, author of Where Is God When It Hurts?“Sooner or later we’re all smacked by the great storms of life. Whether hurricanes or illness or divorce or death, it’s hard to know what to do and how to respond. Drawing on rich research and personal storytelling, Dr. Jamie Aten provides an inspiring and practical resource to get you through. Don’t miss this gem of a book.“ —Margaret Feinberg, author of Fight Back With Joy“Jamie’s vulnerability in sharing the raw reality of his ‘personal disaster’—being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer at age 35, a young father of three girls—will be a balm to any- one who has experienced a disaster of their own. There are no empty promises or inspirational clichés here. Through his personal story and his expertise gathered through years of disaster research, he finds meaning in the struggle and continually comes back to the powerful, enduring promise of God’s faithfulness to redeem our suffering.” —Ed Stetzer, Billy Graham Distinguished Chair, Wheaton College “This beautiful book perfectly marries vulnerable personal narrative with professional expertise. The result is a work that leaves a lasting impression and one you will go back to over and over for reference. Aten pulls us in and carries us along as he paves a clear path for all who need to maneuver through our own personal disasters.” —Shayne Moore, author & director of operations at One Million Thumbprints, NFP "Dr. Jamie Aten has crafted something special here. Through the lens of his own local suffering, Aten simultaneously takes readers on a global journey—reminding us all that though we are irrecoverably marked by our pain, we are also united by it. Where there is suffering, there is authentic resilience. And where there is resilience, there is hope. Reader, dive in and allow A Walking Disaster to gift you with its hard-won, authentic hope." —Aubrey Sampson, church planter, speaker, and author of The Louder Song: Listening for Hope in the Midst of Lament“This beautiful book perfectly marries vulnerable personal narrative with professional expertise. This book is timeless, written in the tone of humility, and deserves a long shelf life." —Jo Anne Lyon, general superintendent emerita and ambassador of the Wesleyan Church “Dr. Aten has written a moving, honest, and inspirational memoir that will give hope to anyone seeking to recover physically, psychologically, and spiritually from a personal disaster. As a scientist and a Christian, rooted in his family and his community, Aten delivers a fully human account of enduring a period of immense suffering and emerging on the other side, fragile but intact, with a new conception of his life, his work, and his faith. Highly recommended.” —Harold G. Koenig, MD, professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Duke University, and codirector of Duke’s Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health “Jamie tells his story with vulnerability and humor, weaving in relevant research with gems of insight from the faith. I couldn’t put this book down. This book is a powerful model of the redemptive meaning the Christian faith brings to even the worst of disasters.” —M. Elizabeth Lewis Hall, PhD, professor, Rosemead School of Psychology and associate editor, Psychology of Religion and Spirituality “This is a book for everyone. Why? Because nobody is immune to the jolts of life. And that’s why I urge you to read this compelling book by Jamie Aten. It’s grounded, practical and powerful. Every page will inspire you. Don’t miss out on this powerful message.” —Les Parrott, PhD, #1 New York Times bestselling author of You’re Stronger Than You Think “Jamie Aten has written a beautifully human book, endowed with the superhuman strength of hope. Fiercely honest, he makes navigating impossible circumstances possible, breathing courage into not only those of us working to mitigate conflict, disaster and human suffering, but also into those of us who are experiencing our own painful life disasters. I walked away from this book changed, and profoundly grateful.” —Belinda Bauman, executive director, One Million Thumbprints “Dr. Aten writes with a holy charge, telling his survival story with cancer in a gripping manner. What is unique about this account is the comparison of his personal disaster with mass disasters that are happening worldwide. This book is a must read for disaster response practitioners who want to ‘get’er’ done’, alerting us to the emotional and spiritual toll disaster survivors go through.” —Kevin King, executive director, Mennonite Disaster Service “Many people feel compassion for and respond to disasters. Few study them. And even fewer commit themselves to teaching others how best to care for men, women, and children during and in the aftermath of unexpected trauma. Dr. Jamie Aten is one of those few. His insights, both from working in disaster zones and from an unexpected encounter with early-life cancer, are deep, nuanced, and profoundly spiritual. If you are looking for wisdom on how to engage disasters—both personal and communal—there may be no finer book. I can’t recommend A Walking Disaster highly enough.” —Ken Wytsma, author of Pursuing Justice and The Myth of Equality “A Walking Disaster is Jamie Aten's memoir of his personal experience with Stage IV colon cancer and his professional experience of working as a disaster psychologist. Aten is a natural storyteller and seamlessly weaves together these two facets of his life. It is a story of what happens to people when life circumstances knock them sideways--and finding God even in the darkest times. For those walking through their own disaster, this book will be a balm. There are no quick fixes or glib answers. Instead, there is deep empathy from someone who has been there, done that.  For helpers, this book gives suggestions on what really helps and what can actually harm. I highly recommend this engaging book.” —Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, FAPA, editor-in-chief, Psychological Trauma

There is no guarantee that "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger" (Kelly Clarkson); but it is guaranteed to change you. We all need hope. We all have our limits. Isolation usually leads to hardness and weakening. We need each other to get through hard times. As you read the book, ask yourself "what about his journey can I apply to my life?" This book is really good for such insights. Here is a real example of life altering events being directed into growth and life-long fulfilling work. Yes, whatever doesn't kill you actually can make you stronger.

In "A Walking Disaster," Dr. Jamie Aten is open about sharing his journey through cancer and how his diagnosis impacted his faith. The book goes beyond a personal testimony, however. Dr. Aten uses his story to discuss how to help others who are experiencing personal disasters by defining concepts such as hope, optimism, and fortitude, as well as reminding readers what not to say or do. His writing is supported by scholarly research but does not require a mental health degree to understand. Highly recommend!

Dr. Aten shares a deeply personal account of his cancer battle in terms that relate to his studies and experience in the field of humanitarian disaster relief. I recommend this book for anyone facing his or her own personal disaster— illness, loss, grief, etc.

Pick this up an go on a journey into the heart of Katrina and a fight with cancer.

This book is a treasure. Not only is it packed with spiritual and psychological insight, it is filled with truth to help us better help others in their life disasters. That being said, the real treasure is Jamie’s transparency throughout the book. Constantly the reader is reminded that knowing something intellectually does not equate to knowing it emotionally.Jamie is an incredible storyteller painting word pictures that bring the reader into the room mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It is no exaggeration to say that reading A Walking Disaster is an experience. Granted, it doesn’t compare to the experience that Jamie shares, but he does a great job of helping us experience a glimpse of the emotional, mental, and spiritual journey that he has been on.I am thankful that he was willing to put this to print and will continue to glean from it.

This book is gripping. Jamie's writing makes you feel like you are in the waiting room, going through procedures, and living these experiences that he is describing with him. It is not just a moving story; there are gems interspersed throughout the stories that give you words of wisdom to face the storms/disasters in your own life. A Walking Disaster makes you reflect on your life's difficulties and how you reached the other side. Chapter 2 also provides useful information on how not to be unhelpful when tragedy strikes. It is a must read no matter what your struggles in life are. And if you know someone that is going through a hard time, this book might be just what that person needs to work through his or her own personal disaster. I highly recommend this book.

With Jamie's background in disaster relief as a framework, he vulnerably shares his own experience with cancer, which affects over 40% of Americans. As he says so beautifully, "Being present to another's suffering, physically, emotionally, and spiritually is what those in crisis need most." Grateful for this book, and Jamie's willingness to tell such a vulnerable story for the rest of us to learn from.

Dr. Jamie has written a book I have not been able to put down. Having survived a catastrophic illness, I can relate to much of what he went through. This book is about hope and faith in the midst of suffering. While we try to make sense of what we go through, Dr. Aten sums it up when he writes, "Though I never would have chosen it, what I learned along the journey that threatened mylife ultimately reshaped my soul."

Review

Truthful―therefore morally courageous and intellectually rigorous. (Norman Podhoretz)Dalrymple's vivid writing and often heartbreaking stories rise above his deeply felt social analysis. (Publishers Weekly)Brilliant social analysis...a master chronicle of life at the bottom. (Hilton Kramer)Lucid, unsentimental, and profoundly honest...Dalrymple is one of the great essayists of our age. (Denis Dutton, Editor, Arts & Letters Daily)This devastating account and analysis of underclass life―and the elite ideas which support it―is a classic for our times. (Thomas Sowell, Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University)It is a truism that ideas have consequences, but a truism is rarely illustrated as implacably as in this book. (George F. Will, syndicated columnist for The Washington Post)Theodore Dalrymple is the best doctor-writer since William Carlos Williams. (Peggy Noonan)Mr. Daniels's best essays cast a spell almost from the opening line. (New York Sun)A landmark experience is reading Life at the Bottom… (Detroit Free Press)Once in a long while a writer comes along with a vision so powerful that it shakes you. Theodore Dalrymple is that kind of writer. (Bruce Ramsey Liberty Press)

As noted in other reviews, this book is a collection of essays that Dalrymple wrote during his years as a prison psychologist. The basic theme is that the progressive liberal views on crime, criminals, prison, etc., that we might think are confined to academic and intellectual circles have permeated the entire society and criminals are adversely affected by these ideas. Progressives talk about criminals being victims of society, and prisoners come to Dalrymple claiming to be exactly that. Liberal sociologists speak of prisons as if their sole purpose is to provide therapy and rehabilitation, with isolation from society, deterrence, etc., being ignored, and Dalrymple hears "Prison's no good to me, Doctor; prison's not what I need." (page 216) Sociologists of crime hold academic conferences about how criminal behavior is an addiction, a compulsion that cannot be resisted, and prisoners ask for therapy for their addiction. The cultural elite preach nihilism and despair, the system is rigged against you, it's all about who you know and not merit, etc., and then we are surprised at the pathetic sight of the elderly wasting their monthly pension income on slot machines and lottery tickets. The subtitle of the book is "The Worldview That Makes the Underclass." The worldview we glimpse in these pages does not originate with the underclass, but it seeps into their minds from the cultural air they breathe, exhaled by the liberal elite who seem not to understand that ideas do indeed have consequences. I know of no other book that makes that insightful connection is such a powerful way. Hence, the recommendation on the cover from Thomas Sowell, "A classic for our times. It is as fundamental for understanding the world we live in as the three R's." (Sowell often cites stories from Dalrymple in his columns, concluding the citation with the point that the American reader probably thinks the story comes from a black urban environment, but the story actually comes from lower-class British white people. It is the worldview, not the skin color, that is decisive.)

Great book and fast read. While it probably could be reduced by 25%, it doesn't seem repetitive really. The author strikes me as someone who isn't going after a segment with a popular view of society, but rather as someone who slowly changed his own views from his career. I think this is mostly accomplished because the author doesn't come across as mean or vindictive. The best line of the book is when he counters the people who say they are "easily led". He points out that he's never heard of someone who was easily led to a better life. They're always "easily led" to drugs or ignorance.Even if you enjoy it, the book is somewhat depressing and you'll ask yourself what the point his story is. But I think this is actually his goal - to show a realistic, unapologetic depressing look on some of the poor.

An excellent and eye opening look into the personal mentalities, choices and patterns of behavior that serve to perpetuate the misery of the underclass.Unfortunately, the kinds of people who would be best served by reading this book (awareness and acknowledgement of a habitual/behavioral problem is, after all, the first step), will never read it.The other group that would be well served to read this are the bleeding hearts who support overly liberal policies. This book provides some disturbingly thought provoking insights into the UK's uber 'Politically Correct' policies and the effects they've had on mentalities and education over there. Many of the articles written by the author and compiled in this book were written in the 90's and early 2000's and yet, some folks are still pushing the US in that direction, despite contraindications from other countries who've already been there. A reader might be inclined to ask, "Why is that?"

This book should be required reading for Priests, charity workers, inner city teachers, and those who wish to work to alleviate corporeal suffering of all kinds. Too often people start these labors expecting gratitude from the recipients of charity only to find the opposite. Those who wish to love and serve the poor should be emotionally prepared for the challenges that face them and not come into the labor with Hallmark card sentimentality which this book will rid from them. Life at the bottom is a page turning collection of essays that illustrate the bad fruit begotten by socialism, sentimentality, relativism and other modern manifestations of error. If a person wants to know what happens to societies that forget how to say mea culpa, amend their lives and do penance for their past sins look here. Our modern ideas rooted in a rejection of truth and justice lead to great misery, and unhappy people no matter how much government welfare is thrown at them.I will be keeping my copy to gird myself both to reread, lend out and use as a reference in the future.

From Booklist

Ages 2-5. Inspired by Psalm 34:8, "O taste and see that the Lord is good," this sweet book invites children and adults to experience together the presence of God through the five senses. The close-up views of nature, of family members and pets, of cookies and brownies and cotton candy help create a sense of serenity, giving a child tangible images of God's imprint on the world. A child can smell the goodness of God in a rose, feel it in a puppy's lick, see it in a sunset, hear it in the cricket's chirp, and taste it in lemonade--all ordinary pleasures to children just beginning to discover order in a bewildering world. The text is simple, inviting adults to expound upon ideas and encouraging interaction. The illustrations, though unfortunately a bit dark, are softly realistic and confined to rectangular templates. The old-fashioned, Sunday-school feel is appropriate in a comforting way--like an easy chair at the end of the day. Shelley Townsend-HudsonCopyright © American Library Association. 58,282 deaths. 304,000 wounded with 75,000 of those severely disabled. Perhaps the Vietnam War did not have to be fought, should the United States had not given in to the threats of Charles de Gaulle, following WWII, that France must have back their Indochina colony or otherwise they would join the Soviet sphere of influence. But, the war was fought and the lives of millions have been changed forever.Literature on WWII is still being written, as well as on Vietnam. New literature, in additional to historical fiction will continue to be published for years to come, as it should. Doug Stanton’s recently published “The Odyssey of Echo Company” is a powerful contribution to the literature on Vietnam. It follows Echo Company, of the 101st Airborne Division’s 1-501 Infantry Regiment’s tense deployment in 1968. More specifically it follows the journey of one young soldier, Stanley Parker, from his Gary, Indiana, home through the rice patties of Vietnam, as well as those other young men who served with him.The journey is not easy as death can come at any moment. This is not an easy book to read for those that had been there, yet it is important in trying to understand the complexity of that war and the reasons for conducting the war, both for Americans and for Vietnamese. The final chapter when Stanley Parker returns to Trung Hoa in 2014, the site of an intense battle on February 18, 1968, it becomes powerful when he meets, by accident or destiny, the VC commander that tried to kill him that day.Author Stanton has made two previous contributions to the literature of war, including the story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in the final days of WWII, and the story of US Special Forces working in northern Afghanistan shortly following 9-11. All three of his books are well researched and written. When this reader boarded the plane back to the United States in September 1969, he thought that he would never see Vietnam again. As fate would have it, he has been back multiple times in subsequent years for business, and grew a love for Vietnam that he did not have in 68 & 69.A final note is that the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry (Airborne) Regiment remains in the business of killing our enemies, although no longer with the 101st Airborne Division. They have since become part of the 25th Infantry Division. This reader’s paratrooper son served two combat tours with the 1-501st in Iraq and Afghanistan. His pride in his regiment is simply reflected on his Arizona license plate, which reads 1-501. Their history lives on.

This is a true story of a young high school graduate who joins the Army right after graduation during the Vietnam war. The solider wants to go to Vietnam immediately but he is assigned to Germany because his older brother is already in Vietnam. He is transferred to Vietnam and is assigned to a recon platoon just before the Tet offensive in January 1968. His recon unit participates in heavy combat just south of the city of Hue. The descriptions of the combat are chilling recollections of how horrible war can be. The book also explains how the soldiers had to interact with the local population when at times they could not distinguish between friend or foe. After the solider, Stan, is wounded a third time he has to leave Vietnam ad gets sent back to the states on leave just before Christmas of 1967. Even on leave Stan finds it difficult to adjust to civilian life. Stan has a second military career. He and a fellow Vietnam veteran return to the country as civilians on a tour and some interesting developments occur. The book recalls how some of Stan’s fellow veterans tried to adjust to civilian life after combat in Vietnam. All of the emotions of war and trying to recover from combat are detailed in this book. If you enjoy military history and your life was some how changed by the Vietnam war, I think that you will enjoy this book. Stan Parker and his fellow recon unit soldiers are among the heroes of the Vietnam war.

Fantastic book! I admit that going into this book, I was already a Doug Stanton fan. Many years ago I read “In Harm’s Way” and it moved me as few books ever have. It was not an easy story to tell and Stanton knocked it out of the park. This new book tells a story that is also not easy to tell, because it is so visceral, and once again: total homerun. The thing about this book that surprised me so much is the deeper and more moving it becomes as you move through it.Great books of historical nonfiction have the ability to illuminate important events through the eyes of the people who lived them. This story captures the essence of the Tet Offensive, the experience of a platoon, the Vietnam War as a whole, and what America was experiencing during these years, through a singular character, Stanley Parker, who endures so much during this book you would think he has super powers. I think a lot of comparisons to Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried will come up because Stanton’s choice of detail is so effective. He makes you feel like you’re experiencing these events yourself. Thank you God you’re not, because the story is harrowing.Whenever I finish an excellent book I can’t stop thinking about it. Which is probably why I am writing this review…

A Hero's journey is a standard myth by which to understand the mind and psyche of a soldier returning from war. Not so for Vietnam Vets. Having fought an extremely unpopular war that divided the country, their reception was disrespectful, unappreciative, disdainful and even hateful. Vietnam Vets were denied the respect, appreciation, acceptance and understanding accorded heroes of war. They have been silenced and isolated, unable to tell their stories and be accepted and respected for who they have become through these experiences. In Oddessey, Doug Stanton opens our eyes, ears and hearts to these wounded and uresolved heroes who risked their lives on our behalf by serving our country. Every American should read Oddessey to thoroughly understand the nature and extent of this gaping wound lingering in our society and how to accept responsibility and personally help to heal it.
