About the Author

The inspiration for Dirty Gourmet came out of Aimee and Mai-Yan’s four-month bike tour across North America several years ago. It was a completely self-sustained trip with the majority of their days ending at a campsite. This made for a lot of camp meals and experimentation with food in the outdoors. When they came back, their friend Emily was just ending three years of living in the mountains and working as an outdoor science teacher. With all three women facing a crossroads, they decided to combine their love of wilderness and shared knowledge about the importance of a good meal in the backcountry and create an outdoor food blog. On New Year's Eve of 2009 at Leo Carillo State Park, at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California, they acquired three campsites, rolled in with a teardrop trailer, and set up a camping party to host and feed their 20 closest friends and family. With delicious food, great company, and a clear starry night (after two rainy plan-and-prep days), Dirty Gourmet was born. Dirty Gourmet has grown organically since Aimee, Mai-Yan, and Emily started six years ago, allowing them to connect with people in the outdoors in many different ways. They have volunteered at trail cleanups, given lectures for the Sierra Club and REI, contributed to Backpacker Magazine, and even dabbled in food production. More recently they’ve focused their efforts on catering and teaching outdoor cooking workshops. Participating in such events has allowed the Dirty Gourmet gals to interact directly with their audience, giving them the opportunity to learn as much as they teach. Through these experiences, they’ve gained a better view of the challenges others have with cooking in the wild. Dirty Gourmet’s priority is to get more people to eat well outdoors, and they’ve found that working face-to-face with their fans and followers is the best and most authentic way to do so. Dinner for two for 5 nights! Less than 5 lbs. So excited to be using my new cookbook for my next trip! The recipes I chose are Noodles with Spicy Peanut Sauce, Soba Noodles with Sweet Chile Chicken, Panang Curry, Rice Bowls with Creamy Italian Dressing, and Lentil Vegetable Stew with Dumplings. The recipes use mostly dehydrated ingredients but a few fresh but hearty ones as well. I’ll update this review after my trip to share how the recipes worked.

Wonderful cookbook! The recipes are well written and make me excited for the next adventure! I like the breakdown between recipes for different types of camping. One important note is that several of the recipes make critical use of nuts. I think that the nutritional benefits and packabilty of nuts make them essential backpacking ingredients. My son is my backpacking partner and his nut allergies will have me looking for substitutions!

I love this book. I like to provide food for friends while I’m out camping/backpacking. Many of my friends are vegetarian. This book caters to meat and not meat eaters very well. I love the step by step directions to make it easy to pack and prepare. I have even used many of these recipes at home. The stories behind the creation of the recipes are an added delight.

The quality of this book was way beyond my expectations. Great meal/snack ideas, quality layout, great pictures. Just flipping through the pages made me want to pack up some ingredients and go for a hike. Very approachable book in the sense that you don't need to have a Michelin star to enjoy. By reading this, you'll be able to evolve beyond brining boring dry goods on your outdoor adventures. I strongly recommend (even for all of you who aren't outdoorsy).

GREAT camping gift!! Color photos are a bonus indeed! Super simple to follow and GREAT for vegetarians!! LOVE it!!

I love this recipe book! It has useful tips for backpacking, camping and car camping food and would definitely recommend this to a friend.

Bought this book for new ideas on backpacking recipes. We’ve tried 3 of them and they have been great! Can’t wait to try more and to even take them out in the back country!

Great cookbook for home use as well as camping!

Written by a politician the first half was very informative and well told. The second part of the book was mainly about the author and the difficult position he was placed in by UK and USA. He believed he was coerced into making the decision to release, or not release the imprisoned bomber who was supposedly dying. All through the first half he insisted that Scotland should hold the trial in the country of their choice and be totally in control of the proceedings and US and UK take a back seat. But, when it came to deciding whether to release the prisoner he then wanted UK to take over and be the bad guys, typical politician.....Truly horrible, heart breaking senseless terrorist murders..... may the perpetrators be damned to hell....

Good book.. Good read....Lots of in-depth details...All the way up to the release of the accused for health reasons...

It was in 1988 that Pan Am flight 103 was blown out of the sky over the town of Lockerbie in southern Scotland. The one man convicted of this atrocity, the Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, died in 2012 from prostate cancer at home with his family in Libya, having been given compassionate release from his prison in Scotland. The issue has never gone quiet, and in particular a group of relatives of the victims, headed by Dr Jim Swire, has never accepted the verdict against Megrahi. Give atrocities time to renew their lease, of course, and there have been others taking the limelight since 1988, so there has to be a reason for another book on Lockerbie, and indeed there is – the controversial decision to grant the compassionate release was the responsibility of just one man, Kenny MacAskill, and we have never been told this story before.MacAskill was the Minster of Justice in the Scottish National Party government that took power in 2007. He was born as late as 1958, so he was a latecomer to Lockerbie matters. Megrahi’s trial and conviction concluded in 2001, and Kenny had no part in that either. What he is here to tell us is what went into the difficult and lonely decision that nobody could share with him, although there were many who would attack it. He takes us through his transition from practising lawyer to SNP politician, and this bit is frankly boring, and you will miss nothing if you skip it. The issues surrounding the grant of compassionate release, on the other hand, are anything but boring, and they are illuminating as well as compulsive reading. The other actors in this drama were Scottish parliamentarians, the British government in London, and the government of the USA, no less, plus non-political activists. The arguments are rather convoluted for a short review, but drastically reduced they boil down to the choice between compassionate release, prisoner exchange with Libya, or (of course) stay as you were. What was promised to whom by whom is a matter of who you want to believe, but at least MacAskill is patently truthful, even when he probably doesn’t understand the full ins and outs. American opinion wanted Megrahi to die in his Scottish prison and claimed a promise. The UK government was slippery, and I almost got the impression that the easiest party to deal with might have been Gaddafi. Nor was it a matter of firing office memos to one another – this was a top-publicity issue, the public had views on it, and various politicians, notably Labour ones, were trying to milk the matter to their own advantage and MacAskill’s discredit. Before we get to that there are the earlier matters of the bombing itself and the extraordinary trial. Earlier material that I read voiced dissatisfaction with the evidence that convicted Megrahi and the conduct of the trial. I give MacAskill a good rating for clarity in his exposition of both, but remain slightly suspicious that he is oversimplifying. Private Eye was convinced that the guilt lay elsewhere, and they had support from the award-winning investigative journalist Paul Foot together with an independent UN assessor. The last major book I have read on the subject is John Ashton’s tome Megrahi You are the Jury. Again the author does not trust the trial, and, come to think of it, MacAskill is the first writer on the subject who does, at least in my experience. MacAskill’s neat headings support his conclusion, Ashton’s mass of detail does the opposite, and I still wonder if Kenny is too neat by half. The trial was utterly extraordinary. It was held at an abandoned NATO base in the Netherlands, and instead of a jury the evidence was entrusted to three eminent Scottish judges, who also passed sentence. This was a piece of Scotland for the purposes of the trial, that being the only arrangement all would accept. Ashton, Private Eye and the rest of them attack the crucial evidence from a Maltese shopkeeper called Tony Gauci, that identified Megrahi as the purchaser of certain items traces of which were discovered in the fragments of the suitcase that had (indisputably) contained the Lockerbie bomb. That was what convicted him, I did not believe it then, and with all respect to Mr MacAskill I don’t believe it yet. What you will read is an admirable statement from the judges that there is a danger of constructing a coherent case if you leave out inconvenient parts of the evidence. Excellent. However it seems to me that that is precisely what they go on to do. Not just that – Kenny makes a cryptic statement about a certain kind of lawyers’ reasoning that seems to me, as a layman, perverse. At first I thought this was tongue-in-cheek, but no, Kenny trots along behind these grave Justices like a little dog on a lead.Whole issues are barely mentioned. The breakin at Heathrow deserves more discussion, and even more so does the fact that an unaccompanied case was accepted for transportation at Luqa and Frankfurt airports. A couple of years ago I and numerous other passengers missed our intercontinental connections at Amsterdam because the 45-minute feeder at Manchester had a case not accounted for. Even MacAskill can’t really see how they got away with that, although he goes along with the verdict eventually.Where does this leave us? MacAskill seems to believe Megrahi was guilty, but in fact he ties in just about the whole alternative cast that Private Eye used to argue for. Again his reasoning is neat, and he traces the story back to the downing of an Iranian airliner by the USS Vincennes, an outrage for which Mr Reagan refused to apologise. It’s a good read, and I recommend it strongly. Kenny would not have got the prize for Written English in the Scottish school that I attended, but he is very readable. Above all, this is a story nobody else could have told.

I had the very great privilege to see Captain Richard Phillips speak in person at a university and I have to say, it was thrilling. His talk started out a tiny bit stilted and rehearsed and he seemed a tad nervous (kind of ironic that an audience would make him at all jittery after what he went through at sea), but as the talk went on, it got much more intense. For some reason he couched the talk in a sort of "business achievement" format (which I gather was probably suggested to him by his booking agency) and those parts were OK, but again, a bit stilted. But once he got back into the memories, once he began to relive his fears and his accomplishments (and failures) those five days at sea, the talk got very exciting.I had bought this book before the talk but didn't get a chance to read it all the way through. But the next day I sat down and read the entire book and I'm so glad that I had it right there. I was able to use the book to relive parts of the talk and to better understand some of the fine points of his very brave adventure. When you see a movie of an event like this, you have to wonder how much is Hollywood and how much is reality, but after having seen him talk and having read this book, that movie is extremely close to portraying exactly what happened. In the Q&A after the talk, in fact, someone asked him that very question: How much of the movie was invented for drama? His reply was that while certain bits of the timelines were altered in small ways and certain events that happened weren't actually shown (in the movie and news stories there were only three shots fired, for example, but in reality many were fired), most of the movie was a very accurate reflection of actual events. If that's the truth, and I believe it is, this is one very brave guy. In the face of near certain death, he put his ship's cargo and his crew ahead of his own life--and he figured out a way to outwit the pirates very early on. It was a gamble, but it saved everyone's lives.I highly recommend both this book and the film. Books like this always have a ghost author involved because, let's face it, he's a sea captain not a writer, but it is his voice that comes through. And I really hope that the writing bug will get ahold of the Captain, because I'd love to hear more about the sea and about his life as a Merchant Marine. If you get the chance to see Captain Phillips speak, do whatever you have to do to get there. In the meantime, what a great summer read this is--I can't wait to read it a second time. My only regret is that I didn't get an opportunity to ask him to sign my book! Next time.

If you’re like me and bought this after seeing the movie “Captain Phillips” you will have a pleasant, easy read ahead of you. The first third of the book I found a little annoying; the author comes across arrogant and self righteous. There is a lot of “I do things this way”, “I am like this”, “I say this because”, etc etc. However the second two thirds of the book are exciting and action packed, and the reader gets a far better understanding of how the author operates and what motives him. I wish there were details on how the crew reacted to the whole saga and if he had interactions or conversations with his crew after he was rescued. Overall this was an easy read, interesting, and a nice piece to add to our understanding of an event that will be included in American history. I do recommend it.

I saw the movie starring Tom Hanks in the lead role. That had me wanting more of the story. I didn't need as much biographical information on Captain Phillips as in the book, but it wasn't much of a distraction. He also lets the reader know more than a few times what a superb boss he is - toots his own horn a bit much. The book does an admirable job of giving the minutiae of what happened in a way a movie can't. In relating what happened he gives readers what he was thinking and feeling all along the way - something a movie can't do as well. This was a very interesting read and I highly recommend it.

Captain Phillips tells his story as he lived it--as it happened, with the insight, feeling and emotion which only he could bring to this fascinating true life story. A self-effacing man who put his crew first--above even his own life--Captain Phillips evokes the self-sacrifice of hundreds of years of seamen, especially captains, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their crews. Captain Phillips is a hero--unique perhaps in our time, but then piracy is also unique (or ought to be) in our time. It is remarkable to think that in the twenty-first century we have pirates operating with impunity on the oceans of the world--holding hostage the nations of the world and collecting hundreds of millions of dollars in ransom. How does one train for that? Captain Phillips did. He was prepared, perhaps better than most. He kept his head and, as a result, kept the lives of his crew. Not enough praise can be given to the Navy Seals who operate behind the scenes but whose operations are seen through Captain Phillip's eyes, in the few, but important glimpses he gets of them. A wonderful true story told with compassion by the man who lived it.

I first saw the film, then read the book. Only someone with a strong will and a highly developed ego could have behaved in the way Captain Phillips behaved, and survived. He was, and is, clearly a "by the book" ship's officer. His type are rarely universally popular with ships' crews. The ordeal Phillips underwent at the hands of the sometimes unstable pirates tested every fibre of his physical and mental being, and it is evident that he drew strength from however submerged his spiritual beliefs may be.The book captures well the tensions, the heat, and the awfulness of the claustrophobic space in the small boat in which he was held captive. The high seas will never be fully devoid of pirates and piracy, but it is only by active resistance to their illegal operations and brutality that freedom of the seas will have any hope of continued existence. Phillips, and those who came to his rescue, combined to say something very strong about the value of coolness, fortitude, and a refusal to be overwhelmed by overwhelming forces. The quality of the writing isn't all that it might have been, but it is a story that in all its absence of a polished style, deserves to be read, and is ultimately uplifting and rewarding.
