Review

Another strength is that these conversations really make the reader want to go back and revisit the lesser-loved albums, with a closer eye to detail than maybe was afforded before. Wrap it all up in a nice hardcover package with lots of fun eye candy, and this is an extremely enjoyable package, one of Popoff’s best books as of late (and he's been on a roll) - Bravewords.comNo stone is left unturned with what we learn here, from instrumentation the band used, to what was happening ‘behind-the-scenes’ with Rush and its record companies, to what songs were played on subsequent tours and how the fans felt about those set lists. - ShortAndSweetNYC.comIt is not just the words that make this such a winner. The book layout is killer with loads of rare pics of the band, as well as photographs of cool ass memorabilia and album art. Rating: A - Classic Rock Revisited

I'm going to hazard a guess that when Popoff finished "Rush: the Illustrated History", he had a lot of stuff left over.....enough for almost another entire book. Because that's how this effort reads.Visually, it's a stunning book, filled with rare photos, memorabilia, etc. But the approach to writing is another matter entirely. The format is that Popoff interviews people on each individual Rush album (although the live records at omitted for some reason). And it starts OK, with people the average Rush fan would recognize -- Kirk Hammet, Mike Portnoy, Paul Gilbert. And every time Ian Grandy open his mouth, a new gem falls out. But these guys get precious little space in the book, and it's all mostly done by the halfway point. The rest -- about 75% of the book -- is comprised of interviews with average Rush fans, who's common thread appears to be their involvement with RushCON. Do I really care about what the bass player form a Rush tribute band think about "Snakes and Arrows"? Not really. And some of these guys are recognizable as "fans" who got booted from Rush internet message boards over the years for their treatment of other fans. Really? In the end, the "analysis" provided here is mostly superficial and predictable (e.g. old Rush=good; new Rush=bad). Aside from another quick glace-through for the pictures, I can't imagine ever reading this books again. If I want analysis from an average fan, I can go to any number of Rush forums and get that for free.

The photographs are nice and some of the descriptive information about the tours and studio sessions is interesting but reading this book is like reading a book that many RUSH fans might be able to write. There is a lot of opinion expressed, but you already have an opinion, as a RUSH fan. The book was inexpensive so worth having if you like to collect books, but if you want in depth biographical information about the band and you are a fan you are unlikely to learn anything new about RUSH from this volume. Stick with listening to RUSH or opt over to some of the engaging books written by Neil Peart.

Got my copy today! A breezy easy but very enjoyable read of all of their albums. I truly love this band and is obvious Popoff does too.. It's a nice layout of all their albums discussed by twenty muscians who give a brief but solid review of every album. There are some pictures in here I haven't seen before and many that I have but are nicely laid out and compliment each album. It's a nice yearbook style cover and will last a long time. This is a nice upgrade from Contents Under Pressure. If you love Rush like I do this is a mostly known but equally revealing book! Worth it!

Well done and by far Popoff"s best Rush book yet. Great insight by musicians, historians, and others connected to the history of the band. Great unseen photos and in depth respect to albums that often don't get the attention they deserve.Worth the $20.

"Rush: Album by Album" is a great read for any true Rush fan. I really enjoyed the insights from so many different people whom I respect. It's interesting reading opinions (some that mirror mine, others that stand in contrast) and learning some of the little-known backstories about each album. I have the entire Rush catalog and this has inspired me to go back and re-visit some of the music that I haven't listened to in awhile, i.e., the synth-heavy albums from the 80's. Rush has been my favorite band since I first discovered them (when "Hemispheres" was released) and I've always been able to count on them to challenge and inspire me.

Very well done book on a great band. Beautifully laid out, it takes you through the band’s career album by album with interviews of Rush fans and historians. I have read several books on Rush and this book supplements and complements those by filling in all the gaps. It’s nice to hear from the famous fans of the band what they liked about each albu. A completely enjoyable read.

As a lifelong Rush fan, I found this book fascinating. I love the music but have never focused too much on the lyrics. This book delved pretty deeply into the lyrics. I enjoyed that perspective. The book is full of great pictures and analysis. I would read a chapter about a particular album and then listen to several songs from that album. It was an enjoyable experience to go back in time.

Lots of good info on Rush in this book.Martin is another good writer of rock music books.A++++.

I'm not a big reviewer. I find writing a challenge, even if it's a positive experience, as it is now. I started learning Java a few months ago and bought a number of books on the topics I needed to really create a java website.I stumbled on this book as one of the ten or so I purchased.I haven't touched the other's since. This book has it all, written so clearly that you know the author is very familiar with her subject and understands it thouroughly. It was written in 2003 and discusses Tomcat server as release 4.0 but that does not matter one bit. I was truly able to use this book to put together a website. Servlet, jsp, even java script is covered. I found many questions I had assembled reading the other books being answered in this one.Murach's books should be proud of this and I notice that they don't publish a 100 books on a subject; just have a few. I'll bet they're just as good.

A good book. Not for someone looking for a "tutorial" or "introduction" on the subjects covered. However, a good reference book to find examples of specific programming problems for someone who already has a good understanding of servlets and JSP. Covers a good number of different aspects of servlet/JSP programming. I also found it a good book to convey some general knowledge in areas like using attributes, DB access, etc. I enjoyed selectively reading different chapters.

This book is exactly what it claims to be: a general reference to hundreds of "everyday" situations Java Web developers face. Just as any cookbook, it doesn't go into the "deepest" details about every little thing, and it does give examples of ways to not reinvent the wheel. Some reviewers see this as worthy of only 1 star... This is only a 1 star book for readers who like to reinvent the wheel and waste time on unnecessary details... if you're like me and have deadlines to meet, you'll find what you need here quickly and efficiently.

Target AudienceWeb developers who are looking for real-life examples of the use of servlets and JSP.ContentsThis is a companion-type book that goes beyond strictly reference material to the use of different servlet and JSP features, along with working examples of code to illustrate the concepts. The book is divided multiple chapters that each cover a different technique or function:Writing Servlets and JSPs; Deploying Servlets and JSPs; Naming Your Servlets; Using Apache Ant; Altering the Format of JSPs; Dynamically Including Content In Servlets and JSPs; Handling Web Form Data in Servlets and JSPs; Uploading Files; Handling Exceptions in Web Applications; Reading And Setting Cookies; Session Tracking; Integrating JavaScript with Servlets And JSPs; Sending Non-HTML Content; Logging Messages from Servlets and JSPs; Authenticating Clients; Binding, Accessing, and Removing Attributes in Web Applications; Embedding Multimedia in JSPs; Working With The Client Request; Filtering Request and Responses; Managing Email In Servlets and JSPs; Accessing Databases; Using Custom Tag Libraries; Using The JSTL; Internationalization; Using JNDI and Enterprise JavaBeans; Harvesting Web Information; Using the Google and Amazon Web APIsReviewI really like the O'Reilly Cookbook series. I read a lot as part of my ongoing study, and often it's easy to understand conceptually what is going on. But making the jump to practical solutions can be difficult at times. The Cookbook series gets plenty of use on my bookshelf as I do my day to day coding. And when it comes to servlet and JSP coding as I continue to learn more about Websphere Application Server, this book will surely become dog-eared like the rest of them. Bruce Perry has done a great job.As with most Cookbook titles, each chapter in the Servlet And JSP Cookbook is made up of a number of Problem/Solution/Discussion groupings. This format proposes a coding problem, states the solution to solve it, and then devotes the necessary space to discuss the solution both with text and code. By using this format, you can think through a working solution and determine how to apply that technique to your own problem. Perry covers a wide range of problems that will help both the beginner and the experienced coder. For beginners, the solutions for setting cookies with servlets and JSPs may be just what you need to get started. Experienced people will find the internationalization and JNDI/Enterprise JavaBeans solutions useful. I appreciate the fact that coders of all experience levels can get something out of this book. The only caveat I have on this book is that it is very focused on the Tomcat and WebLogic web application servers. If that's your platform of choice, you're going to get everything this book has to offer. For me, I'm partial to the WebSphere platform. While I will benefit from a lot of this book, there are chapters that will have no appeal to me, such as using the Ant package. I will also need to pay attention to the coding examples to make sure that the techniques are coded correctly for my platform of choice. Even with that warning, I would still highly recommend this book to all coders working in this area.ConclusionThis is definitely a title that will be useful to you as you learn more about servlet and JSP programming. It will give you the ideas you need to solve real business problems you'll encounter as a developer.

As some other reviewer pointed out (read his reveiw for details), the examples are based on Oreilly's Library, the realy nitty-gritty stuff is completely skipped. I think author is cuckoo, to beleive he expects most of his readers to pay for this joke of a book. I paid four dollars and fifty cents for it (second hand) .... about right price.

This book does a good job of teaching you servlets. Each chapter's snippets of code are useful as a reference on their own; The pseudo e-commerce example at the end of the book helps tie everything together.I would have liked to have seen more information on JSP, but the fact that the author personally responded to a JSP question I had sums up the quality of this book.

This book jumps right into setting up re-usable Servlet components before a novice would even have a chance to understand the code. Repitition would have been a better learning tool, but the re-usable Servlet components distract from the learning and make it more difficult.Overall, the book could have been deeper and more illuminating for the experienced Servlet developer. All in all not a bad book for novices if you skip the re-usable Servlets. Not recommended as a good long term reference.

This is a very good book, in my opinion, covering a very important technology. But there are many odd errors which slow down one's ability to make it through the book. See the other reservations and qualifications in other reviews. They are true. For example, you will look in vain I think to find out the Web Site for the book. I don't even remember how I finally determined how to download the source code, but it was only after I decided to have another go at the book. A sample error is in the NewCustomerServlet.html file of Chapter 4. If you didn't download the source code you wouldn't even have this file. But as supplied the file utilizes the POST method, which takes you directly to the "Account Created" screen. After carefully reading the code for the NewCustomerServlet I realized that the Servlet had to be invoked first with a GET method inorder to first obtain the Customer Account form. This simple change to the html file made it work as advertised but until I discovered what was wrong I felt like the guy in the T.V. ad when he was told "It's late, and you haven't called. Little missy, go to your room."

I have 5 books about Servlets and/or JSP's including the disapointed JavaServerPages and Java Servlet Programming both from o'reilly. This is the best of all, all you need to know is Java, that's all. If you need to develop a Servlet project this book puts you on the road in the first 130 pages. Then if you want to have a better understanding you can read the rest of the book. The book has 24 chapters and 7 apendix and each chapter covers a topic in a very easy and comprehensive way with out confusing references like the o'reilly books that make you feel stupid.More over this book has three complete JSP examples so well written that you can use part of the code for your own projects.

this book describes servlets, how they replace traditional cgi programs, from basic functionality to session based state management.the book is written in a clear manner with good practical examples.this is not a reference book, that is what the API docs are for. This is a book on implementing solutions with the servlet API.

If u r new to the world of Servlets u will find this book pretty useful in learning the basics but don't expect much out of it if u r a professional servlet programmer and want something advanced. there are a few bugs in the book which are highly irritating... first is that there are umpteen instances when James asks u to download the source code from the web site but apparently he has forgotten to include the web site's address! and jsp and rmi stuff given in the book is just a reproduction of the sun's tutorial on these topics and the book does not tell u much abt running the jsp files. these things apart if u r newly into servlets, u will feel the amazing power and robustness of servlets in comparison to cgi scripts. My rating is if u r new to servlets this book is just the right thing to put u on course but if u r a professional programmer, well...

I wish there were a "no star" or "half star" rating.Doesn't cover JSP. Too abstract, not enough information. Returned it immediately. The author sure gives it a shot and has heart, just not the same experience as in other books.I recommend "Java Servlet Programming" (can't go wrong with O'Reilly although this is somewhat out of date) and I was recently pleasantly surprised to find "Professional Java Server Programming" which covers a little of JINI (very well the next wave of replacement for J2EE, etc.)I'll admit I have always found O'Reilly books to be better than WROX (sp?), but this is rapidly changing. Could O'Reilly be falling behind?Whatever you don't buy this book, either of the other two are well worth the additional money.

I was pleased to learn so quickly about server-side Java. This book is called servlets but also handles interesting topics like JSP, RMI and Corba. Those topics are very brief, though. Otherwise this book would have been ten times the size.It does have mistakes that only attentive readers might catch. It was a bit annoying that all these re-usable components were explained, Chpater 4 about the HTML Objects could be completely skipped without harm. A CD-rom containing this code could be handy. Perhaps they can do so when re-printing.I quickly learned to make servlets so it's a good book for it. It does require you to have some expertise in Java, but if you want to write servlets then you should already have that.
