I was hooked on the first book of Operation Billionaire! Beatrice, Olivia and Rosalind along with their backup gang are a trip! I loved the story with Beatrice and Cole, she is such a klutz and he was so sweet to her. Olivia and Cole, she is a mom with a heart of gold and active ovaries but Cole fought the attraction but in the end his heart won out. Finally Rosalind and Orlando, I couldn't stop laughing throughout the book. The time she tried to climb a tree had me in tears from laughing so hard. Orlando, the pipe guy had a heart of gold and a sense of humor to go with it.I am sorry but I am not a fan of Elise Sax mystery series. I wish she would write more books like this series. She is very gifted in humor and romance.

So many laugh out loud moments. This is the kind of book you cannot put down. I want to get to the ending but I also do not want it to end. Great read.

This one might be my favorite of the Operation Billionaire trilogy. I still laughed my head off and fell in love with the characters.

Loved this one of the three the best! So tender and fun and romantic! Can't say enough great things about this author!

Rosalind is the last one left of the Billionaire Girls Club. She's on her way to meet and marry a billionaire in Bora Bora. Problem is that, on the way, she is pushed out of a plane with the only other passenger and, they end up marooned on this island in the middle of nowhere. Orlando is quite the hottie but, Rosalind is determined to marry for financial comfort, not love or sexual gratification!!! That gets a woman nowhere!!!Orlando finds Rosalind gorgeous, strong, determined and, a huge pain in the neck!!! He also finds her the hottest woman he has ever met!!! These two have to find a way to survive on this island with nothing but one set of clothes and a lighter. Somehow or another, they manage this, while also managing to find other things they have in common-like physical things to keep their bodies busy, if not their minds!Rosalind is fine with this, as long as there are NO emotions involved!!! Really???!!!This story is one you can't put down and, also one that is HILARIOUSLY FUNNY and Really Sweet!!!Don't miss it!!!

The funniest one yet! I think I laughed for five chapters straight. Rosalind is the last member of Operation Billionaire and she's determined to "get" her boss during a business trip to Bora Bora. A little misadventure with the airplane has her stranded with Orlando, the buff-tough-dumb-jock-guy. He is her absolute opposite in every way yet the sparks fly quickly with sarcastic sexually charged wit. Their circumstances aren't funny but Orlando's attempts to alleviate the stress are hysterical and heartwarming. Love a good stranded on an island story, not like Gilligan, but one that brings laughter and sexy times. Always happy to receive an early copy, my review was written voluntarily.

Elise Sax NEVER fails to make me laugh! The banter & crazy situations lead up to so many laugh out loud moments. The last book in the Operation Billionaire Trilogy is definitely my favorite!

Letter to a Young Farmer: How to Live Richly without Wealth on the New Garden Farm

Review

Kirkus Reviews- “An elegant, modern georgic in prose by ‘contrary farmer’ Logsdon (Gene Everlasting, 2013, etc.). Of a piece with the works of Wendell Berry, Wes Jackson, and other modern back-to-the-landers, Logsdon’s last book (he died in May 2016) comprises a set of essays addressed to an imagined young person contemplating a life in the fields. ‘There’s no such thing as the American farmer,’ counsels the author at the outset. Instead, there are beet farmers, dairy farmers, flower farmers, marijuana farmers, and even ‘moonshine farmers,’ which makes it difficult to categorize all the different kinds of farmers and to subsume them into any meaningful political organization. The point is that because there is so much diversity in farming, anyone with intelligence, gumption, and stick-to-itiveness shouldn’t be dissuaded from having a go at it. Of course, there are plenty of reasons not to farm, and Logsdon isn’t shy of enumerating the challenges, from the fiscal and physical ones to matters that embrace even the heart: one of his essays concerns how to find a suitable helpmeet out in the sticks, where, as a former seminarian, he discovered ‘there were girls peeking out from behind every crossroads stop sign in the county.’ Times change, but the struggle continues, one aspect of it the corporatization of farming. Oddly, there Logsdon finds an ally in the chain restaurateur Bob Evans, who encouraged those who would listen to invest in biological over mechanical solutions, saying, ‘tractors don’t have babies.’ Logsdon is encouraging without being Pollyannaish, homespun while also sometimes arch: ‘On the occasions when I have had to travel in city traffic, the thought always occurs to me that people who must commute into cities to work spend about as much time just waiting for traffic lights to change as it takes me to write a book.’ From raising cattle to organizing markets, there’s much value here for every aspiring farmer, whose work requires brains along with brawn.”Foreword Reviews- "This engaging, conversational book dispenses life advice for farmers and others who seek to live close to the earth. Letter to a Young Farmer is an accumulation of wisdom with a large dollop of humor and a conversational tone that will endear it to almost every audience. The book recalls a conversation with a parent or older family member in that many of its common-sense directives are informed by experience, from the purchasing of land to the management of aggressive rams. But not all the advice here is specific to farmers or 'garden farmers'; general life advice can be extrapolated from discussions of love, finance, and other common-sense aspects of life. Categorizing Letter is tricky at times, perhaps appropriately so, stating that 'contrary farmers,' as the author self-identifies, tend to defy stereotyping. It is philosophical, but it also dispenses concrete advice. Likewise, though it does present useful information, much of this is apocryphal, cast in a slyly humorous way, and even opinionated. For example, the author agrees that climate change is a problem, but he also describes people concerned over the issue as paranoid 'hand-wringers.’ Letter is best read as an inspirational piece. It seems likely to lure many a gardening neophyte to the farm life, though it takes care to stress the difficulty of this path too. Above all, it preaches consistency, locality, and the long view, occasionally contrasting this philosophy with the frantic pace of mainstream modern life. In the book’s worldview, small farming is the key to solving the most serious of our environmental, mental, and physical problems as well as the existential emptiness of consumerism. Yet at the same time, it does not advocate complete abandonment of capitalist modality. Parts of the book recall Buddhist principles of moderation. With its unique point of view, Letter to a Young Farmer is a must-read piece of environmental, agricultural, and social philosophy.”Booklist- If Logsdon (1932-2016) had his way, the term contrary farmer would have been every bit as familiar as country farmer. A learned proponent of ‘stay in and stay small' garden farming, Logsdon’s outspoken outlook was completely in opposition to the practices and philosophies of corporate agribusiness. Instead of encouraging farmers to 'go big or get out' by adding more property, more machinery, and more debt, Logsdon championed the idea of working on a more personal scale that allows farmers to appreciate nature and honor tradition while still accepting technology and innovation. In this posthumously published book of essays, Logsdon extols the virtues of finding a good mate, praises the pluck and professionalism of women farmers, and enthuses about the health benefits of a day in the barn. Along with other hard-earned advice about hauling livestock, pasturing chickens, and controlling weeds, Logsdon’s lifetime of farming wisdom is firmly lodged in common sense. Sagacious and sly, practical and poetic, Logsdon’s voice may have been contrarian but it was never condescending.”“In the midst of our epidemic fear of the future and its so-far predicted emergencies and catastrophes, here is Gene patiently, quietly, with the right touch of merriment, talking about the small, really possible ways of solving our one great problem: how to live on the Earth without destroying it.”―Wendell Berry, from the forewordPublishers Weekly- Late Ohioan farmer Logsdon (Gene Everlasting: A Contrary Farmer’s Thoughts on Living Forever) sends a meaningful (though poorly titled) message to up-and-coming homestead farmers. Written during the late stages of an illness that would take the author’s life in 2016, the book stands as his final assertion and rallying cry against the misguided notion, so prevalent at one time, that farmers needed to 'get big or get out.' The book isn’t written in the intimate style of a personal missive as the title suggests; it’s more of an essay collection squarely addressing topics such as small-scale economics, pasture farming, raising sheep, and the 'modern plowgirl,' with practical-minded advice throughout. This work serves as a guiding light and lodestar for farmers facing the modern challenges of any farming operation, large or small.”Â

Incredible author - his last book, and definitely worth reading if you have any desire to live off the land (even just an acre or 2). This prolific writer lived the life that many would love to emulate. Get away from the grind, live simply, live richly. I have read much of Logsdon's writing, and looked forward to this one being written as he knew he was dying from cancer. I highly recommend it.

Mr. Logsdon's last book is outstanding. The garden farm is growing exponentially and Gene's writing captures the essence of this movement. All of his books make you think and dream.

This book is well written, very informative concerning the mega farms. Mr. Logsdon is demonstrating that smaller farms operated by the owner and his family is a much more efficient way to farm and care for the land. He points out how the Amish farmers are successful farming without the large expensive machinery.

While it may not be fair to give five stars (or any stars) to a book I'm still in the middle of, what can I say, Gene was on the mark, contrariness and all!

I bought this for a young, organic farmer, but had to read it first since Logsdon was a contributing columnist to the local paper I take. For someone who wants to live simply, this is a wonderful guide.

I never been disappointed with anything gene logsdon ever wrote.

All Mr. Logsdon's books very worth the read and this is no exception

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how farming or agriculture is currently and will be going in the future. Logsdon has a prophetic voice for the future of agriculture. I am convinced of his convictions and await the day that I can tell everyone to read this book followed by a “ told you so!”

A New York Times BestsellerA Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year“[A] splendid debut novel. . . . This is masterly storytelling.” —The New York Times"Chilling yet tender." —People Magazine"Savit’s economical prose beautifully captures a child’s loss of innocence and the spiritual challenges that emerge when a safe world suddenly becomes threatening." —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review"The third-person narrative—lyrical, fluid, with a pervasive shadow of menace—lends a folkloric feel to a graceful story steeped in history, magic, myth, and archetype; comparisons to The Book Thief are apt." —The Horn Book, Starred Review"Savit’s novel, with its wise, philosophical narrator, has the classic feel and elegant, precise language of a book that’s been around forever." —Shelf Awareness, Starred Review"[A] quiet exploration of love and its limits." —The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, Starred Review"Artful, original, insightful." —Kirkus Reviews"A moving, thought-provoking story about coming-of-age in the midst of trauma." —Booklist “The Book Thief. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Any book compared to both of these is in my eyes sure to have an exciting plot, be a fantastic eye opener, and have loveable characters. Anna and the Swallow Man did not disappoint. Just go and read it—it is impossible not to love." —The Guardian“The story is powerful enough to resonate with all ages....Savit's novel, though a quick read, is a powerful one. And just like the child is follows, it has a deeper poignancy masked by its seemingly simple surface." —Mashable"Written like a love song for language — heartbreaking and entrancing and filled with characters whose survival is intimately, sometimes tragically, tied to their love of words." —Bustle “Exquisite.” —The Wall Street Journal

This is really a story about how you can be fooled in life. Anna's story features beautiful language. It often has thought-provoking philosophy, but the story really goes nowhere and the end is quite unsatisfactory. It is overly sad and often confusing. It is difficult to pinpoint who the audience is really supposed to be. Some sites say 12 and up, but language and certain incidents make the unacceptable for children. It could be Young Adult book, but even then, there is too much up in the air; too much ambiguity about who the Swallow Man really is to grab the attention of many YA readers. I found the ending most disappointing. The story basically fits the plot. It is a wandering, meandering series of events that are not resolved in a satisfactory manner. The author gets away with a lot because the language is often beautiful, but that's not enough to sustain a great book. This is not All the Light You Cannot See and it is not The Book Thief because the novel lacks the positive, uplifting elements that could redeem such a maudlin story.

I was so excited when I started reading Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit. I found a book that stood above the typical popular book of the day. To be sure this isn't your typical "New York Times Best Seller" kind of book. It's far too unique in how it treats or approaches its subject, and the sheer beauty of his writing style is far above the usual "appeal to the masses" gripping plot line. Having said this Anna and the Swallow Man was a compelling read and as much a page turner as I have ever read. The foundation of the story is unique to my reading. There is a seven year old girl who speaks seven languages. After her father disappears (this is World War 2 Poland and her father is highly educated) she takes up with a man who speaks five languages as well as "swallow" (the feathered variety). This man is intent on not being discovered by . . . whomever (it's never really clear) . . . and will not even tell Anna his name. He is never anything more than the Swallow Man. He even goes as far as to take her name from her to help in the smoke screen they lay around their lives. The constant threat of discovery adds a constant suspense to the storyline. Death could come by bullet or by starvation. But Swallow Man is good at what he does—survival. In spite of the scenes of war and death Savit writes with a delicacy that surprised and impressed me. For most of the book there was no "slap you in face" kinds of scenes that tear you apart in spite of the many opportunities. Oh, the scenes are tough enough for those with imagination, but there is a sensibility there that impressed me. In a book of war, death, and survival how can you not take notice of lines like: "All she knew was that out there, in a place in the woods near Lublin, there was a beautiful man to whom she wanted to give the taste of bread one final time before he died."Or "When she saw this, something fell into place inside of Anna. Ever since the onslaught of the Germans had begun, even by the side of Reb Hirschl, she had managed to forget completely that there had ever been such a thing as gladness. But here in front of her was indisputable evidence that the world was not everywhere on fire, and was, in fact, growing kinder in places-- the Swallow Man had ventured out to forage not for food, not for gain, not for his benefit or for Anna's, but only for the surprise and delight of her beautiful Reb Hirschl."I had such hopes for this book. I touted its merits up until the night I read the final three chapters. I excitedly told my kids all about it on the way to my daughter's Nutcracker Ballet rehearsal. While there I read the final chapters. On the way home I had nothing to say. The wind was taken from my sail. The romance with the book was over.As you can surmise the ending is not a happy one. That fact has nothing to do with my disaffection with the book. I've read and appreciated books like Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, 1984, Hamlet, and so many others that don't leave a person smiling. So what is different about Anna and the Swallow Man? I think it's that he left the ugly things for the very end after giving me such hope. At the end the book clearly falls into a "loss of innocence" story. That, by itself, is fine. It's been done successfully so many times before and will be again. In this book it struck me as being done wrong. After such beautiful writing three things happen at the end that hit me like a sucker punch in the kidney. I'm not sure if I felt purposefully betrayed by the author or if he just couldn't think of anything better than slapping me in the face and then saying, "I see by the shock on your face that I have written a good book." I never mistake "shock" for "moving and meaningful." I don't mind that the ugly things happened in the book; it's just that they sit at the end like a heart attack at the end of your birthday party. The balance is all wrong.I thought I was reading a contemporary book that was above so many others that are touted today as "best sellers" but in the end Savit brought this book down to the level of most others. I know that endings are difficult to get right. Savit missed it.The Peculiar Children of Bus 13: Book 1: The New GirlJacob and Lace

Sometimes I read a book and immediately think, I need to read this again. This is one. This story of how to survive during under unimaginable circumstances, yet maintain a humanity, is an amazing testament to the strength of the spirit. The stories are enhanced by a language poetical in its prose. There were passages and descriptions that I would read again and again, wishing I could commit It to memory. I plan to visit this book again.

The three central characters draw you in. You soon find yourself caring for them, and will want to know what happens to them after the book ends--but even then you will not be entirely sure what will happen next to either of the two more important ones. Also, for most of the book, you will not be quite sure about the true character of the definitely odd and possibly creepy Swallow Man, and the clues to his real identity can easily be missed. Therefore I would recommend the book mainly for readers who are relatively comfortable with uncertainty, and also like to spend time teasing out deeper meanings rather than just reading for plot.As for those plot readers, they will probably enjoy the way the book draws them on, and will read to the end, but they may feel let down by the uncertainties that remain after they're done.

The invasion of Poland by the Nazi’s in 1939 has been written about many times. But Savit has written about the beginning of the war from the eyes of Anna, a 6 year old girl who is faced with the horrors of war too quickly in her young life. Who is the Swallow Man? Why did he decide to protect and save Anna from this destruction? How did he keep her from danger as they travelled and hid in the forest. A beautiful yet sad story of Anna’s introduction to the war. Savit wrote a compelling, tender, protective story of the horrors of war and yet demonstrated the strength of individuals, even the very young, to survive.

Loved this book. Savit is a master storyteller. I read it through without putting it down.

Hmmmm, I don't know what to say. I thoroughly enjoyed this book until the ending. The ending flops dead in the water. What in the world is up with that? The writing is beautiful. The story captivating. As a reader you love Anna and develop a love/hate relationship with the Swallow Man. Why in the world the author (or editor allow) such am ambiguous ending to such a well-written beautiful tale?

I was able to anticipate the ending well before I got there but couldn't wait to see how it would be revealed. I loved the book. On a par with A Man Called OVI. Another one is The Hundred Year Old Man Who Escapes Out the Window and Disappears. Loved all three of them. They are so unusual and heart warming.

Black on Both Sides: A Racial History of Trans Identity

Review

"Black on Both Sides challenges the historical account of trans studies invention by excavating a black trans presence and persona long before modern articulations of such. C. Riley Snorton offers us a way to read the historical record in a fashion that requires the unthought to be the basis of the foundation for our claims of newness, demonstrating that there is no revision of what it means to be human without coming through blackness, past and present."—Rinaldo Walcott, author of Queer Returns: Essays on Multiculturalism, Diaspora, and Black Studies"C. Riley Snorton's Black on Both Sides is a welcome contribution to black studies with the potential to influence future directions in the burgeoning field of transgender studies. It is rigorous scholarship that manages to be imaginative and timely."—Kara Keeling, author of The Witch’s Flight: The Cinematic, the Black Femme, and the Image of Common Sense"In a beautifully written and brilliant intervention and extension—the first full length book ‘to examine the historical and contemporary importance of race to the constitution of “trans gender”’—C. Riley Snorton identifies and performs a black trans reading practice, from Anarcha to Transgender Days of Remembrance."—Christina Sharpe, author of In the Wake: On Blackness and Being"The research done here is stellar."—Washington Blade"This book is an outstanding contribution to conversations about black and trans studies; it will transform scholarly understandings of both fields and the intersections between them."—CHOICE"Black on Both Sides reminds us that when we are careful about how we tell stories, we get new, nuanced stories that expose systems for what they are and that honor historically ignored populations."—Autostraddle

I was drawn to C. Riley Snorton’s Black on Both Sides: A Racial History of Trans Identity due to my interest in archiving and its usefulness for Black trans studies. Some of the questions taken up by the work are: What are the possibilities of archives and what narratives emerge from them? How does one engage with transness, particularly racialized trans subjects, in an archive? How does one define transness in the confines of Blackness and vice versa? By dissecting Snorton’s work, one notes that he provides a ruttier for how to engage in critical archival studies for research on Black individuals.Black on Both Sides traces Black “trans” subjectivity in the 19th and 20th century; each chapter takes up an event in history such as the nonconsensual gynecological testing of Black women in the 19th century or mid-twentieth century newspaper articles on individuals whose gender expression does not align with their assigned gender. He utilizes “trans” subjectivity to investigate moments where Black individuals become ungendered or transgress racialized gender boundaries. Snorton argues, that this work, “is not a history per se so much as it is a set of political propositions, theories of history and writerly experiments.”(6) He draws upon on a deep and varied archive of materials—early sexological texts, fugitive slave narratives, Afro-modernist literature, sensationalist journalism, and Hollywood films.

In this exceptional and beautifully written book, C. Riley Snorton explores the intersections of blackness and transness. The range of archival materials is astounding and Snorton's analysis is just mind blowing. His resistance of the dominant periodization of trans as emerging with the clinic is incredibly compelling. Though the book’s title offers a “a racial history,” Snorton claims that “the problem under review here is time” (xiv) and that the book “is not a history per se so much as it is a set of political propositions, theories of history, and writerly experiments” (6). This book is required reading for anyone interested in race, gender, sexuality, medicine, history.
