I was less than impressed with this book. Little explanation for alot of the concepts. The explanations seem very all over the place and out of order. Also (and this is 100% opinion) alot of the way he programmed seemed to go counter to the "best practices" I've been reading about.

This is one of the rare technical books, that's actually quite fun to read. Additionally, all except the last two chapters can be read out of turn. I think this is an excellent book. Take the time and get excited by taking a fresh look at ruby.

The past few years have seen the English-language Ruby book market explode. Before the phenomenal success of Rails it was perfectly possible to own every available title (and not use much storage space), but now that would be quite a challenge and lead to considerable redundancy. Having worked my way through quite a few Rails books of late, reading Practical Ruby Projects--a Ruby book that doesn't even mention web frameworks--was both a pleasant diversion and a highly illuminating experience.Like the last volume I reviewed (Pro JavaScript Design Patterns), this book is unabashedly aimed at experienced programmers. There's a brief paragraph on "getting set up", but no detailed guide to obtaining the tools. Instead we dive right in to a sequence of projects that includes: making music (dipping into calling C code from ruby), animation, simulation, building a strategy game (and adding a RubyCocoa frontend), genetic algorithms, and even implementing lisp and parsers. Once again the "apress roadmap," a diagram intended to show how the skillsets in their different volumes build on one another, is misleading pitching this between "Beginning Ruby" and other volumes I've reviewed like Practical Ruby for System Administration and Pro Active Record. Don't believe it. Though there's little overlap in the material, this is a more advanced volume than either of those and readers should be prepared. The pace of the book is measured and Topher Cyll does a good job of gradually building up the projects a step at a time. Along the way a variety of practices are demonstrated with many methods stubbed out for demonstration purposes before being filled in when they are needed, and considerable time spent on decoupling code. That latter piece is particularly in evidence in the chapters on building a turn-based strategy game and then developing a RubyCocoa front-end. Despite careful design early on further refactoring is needed to make it easy to apply the front-end and that process is carefully worked through. Most of the book makes some use of existing libraries. The initial lisp chapter uses the sexp library and the subsequent section on writing a parse relies on rparsec. For the most part, however, use of the libraries is kept to a minimum, allowing for fairly self-contained code. Unit testing is largely ignored until the last chapter, where the need for tests when constructing a grammar/parser is explained and a test-first development model is encouraged. That works well to demonstrate the power of tests for complex (and often brittle) code. This is not a book designed for public transport reading. Working through chapters on the bus I frequently found myself wanting to reach for my laptop to get a better grasp of how a piece of code worked. While the explanation is generally very good, with material of this complexity there is nothing like running the code and tweaking it to make sure you've understood exactly what each transformation does. It's a book to take your time over, so be prepared!A few editorial errors have crept in, suggesting a re-organisation of the contents late in the day. In particular an early reference to s-expressions seemed to presume that the lisp and/or parsing chapters were featured early. That's not a big deal and will hopefully be corrected in later printings; the author does encourage skipping around within the book, but there is value in working through it roughly in order, and not just for the two "paired" chapters that explicitly build on one another.Perhaps the most striking thing about this book is the reminder that even for those of us whose primary programming activity is web development, studying other areas can be extremely helpful. Not only is it helpful to see how other developers structure their code, but tools like genetic algorithms and parsers are likely to be very helpful where web applications require sophisticated processing and/or backend systems. And it never hurts to learn a little lisp. For the ruby developer who's comfortable with the language and wants to stretch out a little, this book would be an excellent investment.Disclaimer: I was sent a copy of this book for review by the publisher.

This is a great ruby book for those new to the language, or for those who already know a good deal of ruby but wouldn't mind learning how to do some cool quirky things with ruby, like programmatically compose and play midi. This book will not walk you through how to use ruby if you are new to the language -- but their are plenty of other books (and online references) that can do the real introductory teaching. Working through some of the projects in this book *will* help you really get comfortable with ruby, by putting it to practice in non-boilerplate ways.If you have more experience with Ruby, this book is still compelling. It walks through some nonstandard projects -- interesting projects on their own, and certainly the sort of projects that will get your mind working, and have you looking at the problem and the language in a new light.Throughout, care is taken with the writing -- the text isn't a boring technical manual, but is compelling and interesting, while packing in a lot of technical detail!

Most Ruby books milk newbies jumping on the bandwagon for cash. This is a book for experienced Ruby programmers who want to be awesome Ruby programmers. The book of the book is all about parsing and shows you how to implement Lisp in Ruby; the first project is a compact, simple, powerful system for creating music in real time in Ruby. I'm using it to drive Propellerhead Reason from the command line and I'm on page 25. This is an absolutely excellent book. The best Ruby book I've seen in years. The only Ruby book I'd recommend to experts. This is the bomb book.

The hands-on style of this book is contagious; you'll find yourself really wanting to jump in and try out the code samples. The source is available on Topher's site, but the simplicity and sense of immediacy are such that you may want to just start typing it in yourself. In a few minutes, you're making music or creating a game.

When I heard Annabeth Albert’s new series is a spinoff from her #gaymers series AND it is military-themed, I fully admit that the fanboy in me let out a happy squee. After reading the first book, Off Base, though, I didn’t have quite as good an impression as I did of the other books of hers I’ve read, because it took me a bit to get into the story and characters. Once I got there, though, it was an enjoyable read that finished strongly. After new Navy SEAL Zack Nelson has some problems with other members of his team in San Diego, he takes advantage of an offer to move into a rental unit off base. Isolation is just the thing he wants, and the price is right too, since he’s helping with some remodeling projects on the place. Or he’s trying to, anyway. Pike Reynolds thought he was on the fast track after completing his dissertation, but he wasn’t able to land his dream job. So when an opportunity to teach in San Diego comes up, he feels like he needs to take it. And that puts him back into contact with Zack, a “straight” guy he knows he has chemistry with, but he also knows he has no interest in being a guinea pig for curiosity again, even though Zack hits all his buttons. When they move in together, Zack’s resistance crumbles and he lets himself be the thing he’s always tried to hide, both from the outside world and himself. There’s no way he can ever step out of the shell he’s confined himself to, but he’ll need to if he’s going to keep Pike.Zack is your classic closet case, and he has a lot of good reasons for it. He grew up in a strict religious family that constantly railed against homosexuality, and even though he knows gays are allowed in the military (and he personally knows a fellow SEAL who is gay), hostility from his teammates makes that impossible. It’s just safer all around if he denies his thoughts and urges, even to himself. And to do that, he really closes himself off to people as a whole. He knows Pike through the gay SEAL (and we met both Zack and Pike in book three of the #gaymers series, Connection Error, because of this fact), and Pike seems to be able to see through all his barriers. But even after Zack starts letting his guard down within the bubble that is their rental house, Pike is torn between being the out-and-proud gay man he’s always been and keeping things comfortable for Zack. It’s a conflict in Pike that Zack is fully aware of, but it’s not easy for someone like Zack to take such a big risk. The story line is fine in Off Base, but I had a lot of difficulty getting into it because things are very choppy in the first quarter of the book. I can’t put my finger on exactly what caused it, but it was a struggle. Once they moved in together, things picked up and this wasn’t a problem for me anymore. It’s not just that the sex was hot either (and it was.) These two worked together as a couple, and the struggles they went through felt very real. And outside the relationship, their problems had much in common with one another, even though neither could really help the other with them. Put all of this together and I felt sympathetic to their plights, and when things got rough for them, I understood why, even though I didn’t like it. But that often makes these final dramatic sequences much better in the long run.As a whole, Annabeth Albert’s Off Base is a decent read once you get past the first chunk of the book. That surprised me in retrospect, because I’ve not had that issue with any of the other books of hers that I’ve read. That being said, I do recommend this title, and I really look forward to the next one, because I think there’s a hot military widower that’s going to be the main character. There’s no way I could pass that up.

Wow! I think Off Base is probably my favorite book by Annabeth Albert; this one really blew me out of the water and I loved it so much! I don’t even know where to start with all the things I liked. Albert’s books are always very heavily character driven so I loved Zack and Pike! I thought it was really unique that we had a Navy SEAL who was new to the teams and still going through training. That was different than most Navy SEAL books with the super alpha male who’s been doing it for a long time and is jaded and tough. I liked that this one was different with Zack still trying to fit in with his team and figure things out; his vulnerability really made you empathize with his character.I am completely in love with both of these characters! I loved how they were individually and I especially loved how they were together. Initially, I thought that Pike was going to come across as a little immature but he was in fact the complete opposite and I thought he was a perfect match to help Zack figure out who he really was. Pike was fun and silly, so he could keep things lighthearted but he also knew when to be serious. I really liked that even though Pike had been down this route before and worried that Zack would end up like his ex, he was still incredibly patient with Zack and genuinely cared for him.I was also a bit worried I wouldn’t like Zack as much for so strongly denying who he was but Albert does such an amazing job of making you feel and understand what Zack is going through. You can’t help but just want to give him a hug and do anything you can to make his life easier. I especially like that when things got intimate, it was Zack who made the first move. He was so self-conscious about his feelings that I don’t think it would have worked very well if Pike had been the one to make a move first but instead it was Zack taking control of his life. And even though it took Zack a long time to be comfortable with his sexuality in public, I loved that he fully embraced what they had when they were together in the privacy of their house.I was also excited to see Ryan and Josiah from Connection Error made a lot of appearances in this book. Ryan is one of my favorite characters from the #gaymers series so it was nice to see more of him and he was a really great friend for Zack to have. I can’t wait for the next book!

“Off Base” was my first book by Annabeth Albert and I’m mixed when it comes to my review. I like how she writes but I’m not a fan of how much of a doormat Pike was when it came to Zack and their relationship. I wanted to like them together but throughout the story I keep feeling Pike deserved better. I really disliked how Pike kept taking everything Zack threw at him and didn’t like how Zack didn’t fight for anything. I may be in the minority though so if you like closeted stories this may be for you. Overall I loved Pike and their friends Ryan and Josiah but Zack didn’t ever really make the story for me.

I always love Annabeth Albert's characters.I started reading this book as soon as it hit my inbox (I'd pre-ordered) and, although I am making my way through seven other books, I couldn't put this one down. I have, in fact, just now looked up the author on amazon and pre-ordered At Attention, the next in this series that feeds right off the Gaymers series. The author writes strongly character-driven stories. That's the key to my heart.I should've known. ;)As with her other series, there isn't a lot of technical detail regarding their jobs. I only find that good if it's relevant, so I note it for those who want the SEAL or professor aspects to show a deeper knowledge on the author's part. I noticed it, so it wasn't quite as much as I like even though I'm neither a SEAL nor a professor. However, since I'm working on writing a book, I well aware how much research it can take to just drop in a sentence here and there in a profession you don't know and NOT get it wrong. So, I support glossing over rather than hours of research that might still risk the ire of, say, a Navy SEAL reader if I got it wrong. :)

Easy Chinese Recipes: Family Favorites From Dim Sum to Kung Pao, by Bee Yinn Low

Review

"Keeping matters simple without descending into the simplistic, Low presents a few dozen standard Chinese recipes from both Cantonese and Sichuan traditions." —Booklist"And now Bee's authored the cookbook Easy Chinese Recipes, Family Favorites from Dim Sum to Kung Pao, featuring over 80 Chinese recipes perfect for the novice cook and anyone that doesn't have a Chinese restaurant right next door." —FoodieCrush.com blog"Her recipes are beyond amazing, and her photography is just stunning, to say the least. "—Babble.com"The theme is "easy," but Low offers an intriguing range of Chinese food, not just pared-down, simple dishes for beginners." —LA Weekly"One of the first things I do with a new cookbook is thumb through the pages to get a feel for the layout. Low's book has great photos of the dishes and photos showing tips/techniques; I wouldn't expect anything less from a world-renowned blogger (http://www.rasamalaysia.com/). A few more likes, especially appreciated in ethnic cookbooks, are the chapters containing cooking tips and techniques; description of equipment and utensils; and, more importantly, a description of ingredients with photos of the common brands of bottled and jarred sauces/condiments. I may not be able to read Chinese, but I'm pretty good at matching pictures." —TheDaringKitchen.com blog"Plumb Bee's debut cookbook and you'll find interesting nuggets of information that she's plucked from Asian kitchens. To frame her book "easy" is to downgrade it because "easy" often connotes shortcuts. In reality, the book is dotted with nifty tidbits to help you understand certain aspects of Chinese cooking." —VietWorldKitchen.com blog"Demystifying basic Chinese cookery, everything is clear, every recipe easily accessible, every one easy to follow in this volume. If new to Chinese cuisine, read the author's passion and perfection as you make every recipe. […] This book is at the top of its genre." —Flavor & Fortune blog"The book is a labor of love for Low, who in addition to penning the recipes and explanations, also styled and shot the food—in all 80 Chinese dishes harvested from her blog entries. You will find popular Chinese classics like Fried Rice, Tea Leaf Eggs, as well as dim sum items that Low has perfected at home, and American favorites like Mongolian Beef, and Beef with Broccoli. This book is ideal for beginner cooks and those looking for some simple, mid-week meal ideas." — Flavours Magazine

I am a stir fry fanatic and have been making Chinese food for close to 20 years now. I have developed my own recipes over the years through trial and error and discovering personal preference, but am always on the lookout for new ideas and techniques. The recipes in this book are exactly what I would expect for quality stir fry dishes, and some are even quite close to the recipes I have developed over the years. On top of that she shares many great tips that it would take a long time to discover on your own (such as how to properly treat shrimp before stir frying). Even with my stir frying experience I still found this book to be quite useful, and for someone just getting starting I would dare say this is THE book to get you started on your journey.

Not bad at all!! Her techniques (towards the beginning of the book) and recipes were great! Out of the several cookbooks I own, this is one of the best. My favorite recipe, Kung Pao chicken, tastes very similar (and perhaps better) than the one I get from restaurants. She's the real deal. Her recipes are not watered down like in most other cook books. Her book is one of the few that's actually worth getting if you love Chinese food. Follow all her tips, including how to tenderize meat. It's worth the extra steps. My husband and I loved the recipes--I've prepared several from this book. All were good. Thank you for writing a well thought out book!! Lots of ingredients but yummy results!! This foodie appreciates it! I love Chinese food even though I'm not Chinese. ;)

We love Chinese food, because it’s so healthy and I wanted to learn to make some of our favorites. This cookbook helped me understand how to cut and tenderize meats the proper way for Chinese dishes. Also the different noodle products, how to make them fresh and what dishes and sauces to use with them. There are many recipes included from appetizers like soups, pot stickers, egg and spring rolls to main dishes using poultry, beef, fish and pork and rice dishes, deserts are also included. I am so pleased with this purchase.

Easy chinese recipes: family favorites from dim sum to kung Pao, pretty much says it all. This cookbook is full of the kind of recipes one would get out in a restaurant, from egg drop soup to orange chicken, only you, yes you, can make these at home. Low has demystified the sauces, the ingredients, and the techniques to make the recipes achievable, and yes, easy. This isn't a huge cookbook but the recipes included are the ones most people do seem to favor. When I read the recipe for shrimp toast I was thinking that no way would this taste like anything I'd get in a restaurant, it was too easy. As my sons and I chowed through the toast I kept thinking, wow, I made this! wow! and it was as good, if not better, than any restaurant. We have a place here, pushcart dim sum, that is delicious (and fairly pricey) At home, from this cookbook so far, I've made the ribs, the black bean clams, and the pork bun filling, and it's all been really doable. I am not a stranger to Chinese cooking, I've been doing it for many years, but I still like to eat out because restaurant food is just different, and now I am making food that tastes like I ordered it from our favorite Chinese take out.Pros:well laid out recipes with ingredient list and directions that are easy to read and followPictures of every recipepictures of some of the trickier techniquesa good basic explanation of techniques and ingredients in the front of the bookdelicious easy recipesCons: none that I've found. quibbles- I like plain white background paper but that isn't really star reduction worthy.*ETA April 12, 2012. I can't tell you how much I love this book. Everything comes out delicious and looking pretty much like the picture. Out of 14 chinese cookbooks this has become my go to book. I recently did a cook book purge and got rid of over 300, including several Chinese, I just didn't need them anymore because this is the book I turn to. I make something from it weekly, and it's such a winner. Make this your fist Chinese cookbook, or your last, either way you will be happy you bought this book.

It has many appetizing pictures, and most of the recipes are fairly easy. There are descriptions of each dish with an appealing flavor profile and usually some degree of history or interesting details in case the recipe is an unfamiliar one, though most of your restaurant favorites are in here. It does also have a few "unusual" dishes, such as squid or duck not as common on a Westernized Chinese menu, and most of the recipes can be adapted around other primary meats or even tofu, though for tofu you should probably be aware of different cooking times. However, if you have access to more uncommon meats, such as squid, duck, etc., the dishes' sauces and seasonings will substitute well.If there's a downside, the worst thing would be some of the dishes (Hunan Beef) came out a little salty for my taste as written, and I don't find fast-food Chinese "salty," so that may be saying something. The rest of my family loves the dishes I think are too salty, however. The best thing the cook in the family liked about this book was the beginning section that details many of the ingredients unique to Chinese cooking, with flavor profiles and pictures. It allows her to experiment more with Chinese flavors when she knows what adds what and what to look for.Ultimately I'd say it's a great book for people who don't cook much, or people who are great cooks but not familiar with Chinese cooking who want to learn the tastes and techniques to add to their repertoire. Even if you know how to stir-fry, the primary method (though not the only method; there's a soup and dessert section), it's also great for learning the flavor mixes that make Chinese cooking unique, and tips and tricks for Chinese style springy shrimp and such.
