Review

"This is a beautiful, enchanting, and magical book with a fascinating plotline and engaging, personable characters.  "The author does a wonderful job expressing deep, powerful, spiritual truths and expanding the consciousness of the reader while simultaneously telling an enjoyable, entertaining story.  It is multi-dimensionally layered and multi-faceted. The story will whisk you away, into a vibrant realm filled with faery light and ancient knowledge. I highly recommend this book."   ~ Elaine Yoshikawa, Ph.D. #1 Bestselling Author of The Shift Journey "I love The Forest Speaks books! Diomira's use of imagery makes me feel like I am right there with the characters. I see, hear and feel them in the detail she provides.   "It was difficult to put the book down in order to go to bed at night! This book, that begins with the infant of the Dragon clan being brought to Elysinia, is just as exciting and intriguing as the first book in the series. The way the time periods and characters are interwoven lends an air of mystery to the story. The author has created a world that we humans can (and must) learn from! I want to live in the magic of this world! Can't wait for the next book! This series reminds me of the Shire and the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien."    ~ Toni Luisa Rivera, DC, author of #1 Bestseller, The Propelled Heart

From the Author

Chapter1 SilverScale "Humanity awakens slowly. Matter-blinded through the centuries, few menas yet perceive the Mind within the substance, the Life within the form."  - Geoffrey Hodson, The Kingdom of the Gods The Forest - 11,000 BCE (16 years before GG)  "There is a darkness that hovers aroundmankind. Soon it will spread and affect even those of the Moon Clan. Have you not all seen the stories within the tree rings? We must decide at which pointwe choose to disengage and retreat into the Mists, and leave the humans to themselves." The flames around his form lurched as Leori voiced his opinion. Golden threads of fiery light twist and wound their way through his hair that was more like a mane. This Faery elder had seen enough. "Leori, do wereally do them a service by deserting them at this crucial time within the Ages?" Seamone wondered aloud. A watery milieu of wave forms moved around her body. Indigo and blue hues gave way to sea foam green rays. She waved her hands through these colors sporadically helping the emotions to flow and not settle. The slamming of Leori's staff shook the ground, and was followed by a curt retort: "Do we not do them a great disservice by forcing their hand when there exists so little willingness? Darkness has all but consumed their hearts and clouded their minds!"A wind blew from everywhere and nowhere. Vayu was deeply conflicted by the issue. He knew the council had to come to some form of agreement. There greatest strength was inunity. Logic and reason were the gifts of this faery elder of the Air Clan. He moved for clarification, "Is it not now, more than ever, so important that we try to strengthen our alliance? If we continue to stand together perhaps all will not be lost during the Age of Sleep..." Elysinia spoke now, her tone loving but firm, "Leori is correct in his conjecture that no good ever comes by forcing one's will upon another, even if the cause be noble. However there are still those who wish to work side by side. Until the day comes when this is not so, I believe we must continue to work together with the humans." Visible through the skylight was the starlit sky. The opening rested in the high earthen ceiling above, and was the only connection to the surface in this dome-like subterranean cave. Elysinia's golden hair gleamed in the starlight. The glow ofher skin shone through her silken garment of silver and violet. She turned toVayu, acknowledging that she'd heard him as well: "It is also rightto understand the importance of our partnership with the humans.  Do not forget that our destiny is deeply intertwined with theirs. Although we have grown along different paths we are still connected through our Earthly home, as well as..." before Elysinia could finish her point Rael appeared from the tunnels.A Faery page who was Elysinia's right hand in every way, Rael approached respectfully:"Elysinia, forgive my intrusion, but you must come to the East Mound Entrance at once. There is something you are going to want to see."Elysinia looked over at the others. The others nodded their understanding. They were a long way away from mutual agreement, but with more time perhaps... "We shall adjourn the meeting for now. Let us resume the discussion again at the First Quarter Moon." Elysinia excused herself from the room that held the large Round Table. Gliding swiftly down the long corridor that led to the outskirts of the kingdom, she knew full well that Rael would not have considered interrupting if something weren't of the utmost importance. Tall and sparkling was this being, just like all of the Faery Ones. His eyes, a bluish grey with specks of gold, while deeply hypnotic were often cool and distant. Royal blue attire always graced his form, and his demeanor was noble and true. Rael had been working with Elysinia for over 3,000 years. The crystals held him in fascination, and  nothing brought him greater joy.The corridor came to an end offering a myriad of directions in which to proceed. Twists and turns were prevalent and one who did not know these underground tunnels well would consider themselves to be forever lost within a maze of a thousand choices. The tunnels connected to the innermost rooms and were necessary to guard the most precious and sacred treasures. They did nottarry; Rael and Elysinia took no thought as they made their way around the curling passageways, further and further out of the Earth toward the surface they traveled.  Rael offered no information. Either he had none to give, or he thought better to allow the situation to speak for itself, Elysinia did not know. As they approached the East Mound Entrance, a tiny shriek filled the air. Elysinia's attention was suddenly drawn to a shadowy and pallid form. Held and sheltered within the folds of a mysterious hooded woman's long dark cape, a tiny infant cried out.The woman struggled to maintain her footing, and a faery scout standing nearby moved quickly offering himself as a brace to steady her. Holding the baby with her one arm, the debilitated woman reached out for Elysinia with the other.Visibly unwell, she attempted to mutter an explanation, "You are She Who Records Time, yes..."the woman managed."Yes, I am Elysinia. What brings you here to our borders in such dire straits?""You and I are more familiar than you know, although my condition makes me nearly unrecognizable to you or anyone of your kind or another. We have hidden among the shadows for some time. There is no time for explanation, though, for mytime is not long now."The sickly and feeble woman looked at the baby, "Please. You must help me. Help him. He is the last.""The last...?"Elysinia was confused momentarily. Just as the realization began to dawn the woman spoke again, "Yes, My Lady. He is the last of the Dragon Clan." As those last words fell from her lips her form began to dissolve. Dispersed as if by wind, she grew ethereal, and flickered in and out of existence.  Understanding the gravity of the situation, the Faery elder uttered, "Wait! What House is he of? How will I properly train him? I must know from which one of the four Houses he hails!"  Coming from all directions, an echo was heard on the wind as it whispered through the trees,"He was born with the Silver Scale." Embedded in the center of the baby's tiny wrist was a tiny silver dragon scale. It gleamed inthe light of the moon that hung low and full this night. The mark of the Silver Prince, thought Elysinia. The baby floated in midair. Then by some unseen force, he gently arrived in Elysinia's arms. In the place where the woman had stood, a swirling silver white mist filled the air, and something materialized there. Only a few seemed to notice. Rael and Elysinia looked at one another. The baby who had been crying incessantly suddenly became silent, and a tiny sound like a giggle arose from his lips. A glimpse of what appeared to be the silhouette of a Silver Dragon flashed before their eyes. And just as soon as it had emerged, it was gone, as if it were never even there.

The Forest Speaks 2 is as intriguing as the First book. I couldn't put either of them down and can't wait for the next one. I wish the books were made into movies. The stories got me thinking about my own life, my soul's purpose, and how everything is connected, people, animals, and plants. I felt inspired to allow my inner guidance to lead me. I now take time to try new things that I feel compelled to do such as painting and drawing. If you are looking for a book to inspire you, then I definitely would recommend this book.

The Forest Speaks Series of books are an excellent way to help one gain insight into the Faery Realms. I believe Diomira is a genuine link to remembering these worlds. I love her style of writing, the way she uses the short chapters, and the movement between the timelines. This seems to help to enable being absorbed into the story, and to leave the so called "real" world. It feels so natural that one begins to blend into a vesica pisces state of mind. One evening as I recollected Diomira's work, I had a distinct deja-vu feeling of the Faery Realms, and I felt that I was seeing her story in the Hall of Records. I experienced a beautiful energy welling up from within that I had not felt before. As I witnessed this, I tried to check it with my rational mind, but the energy continued to arise. I know that her story is real then and now. Bob Hawkinson - Chelsea, Oklahoma

Book 2 - Through the Eyes of the Dragon takes us even deeper into the journey of the mystical. I loved this book as much as the first one. I can't wait for the next one. How many times have you scratched your head when something unusual happens? Believe it, it's real! Diomira brings a beautiful light to this delicious journey of ours.

Diomira is a gifted writer with a beautiful heart. She takes the reader on a journey into imagination, and stretches the boundaries of dimensional planes. The Forest Speaks: Book 2 - Through the Eyes of the Dragon stirred hope in my soul. Humanity is intrinsically connected to the soul of Planet Earth. This book allows you to feel her heartbeat. The new age is upon us, it's time to open our eyes and our hearts to embrace the light and love within us all.

This writer is connected to the fairy world.

Prosecuting the President manages to make the history of special prosecutors into a real page turner. Coan leaves his readers with a deeper understanding of why these stories are more relevant than ever today and why we all play a role in holding our leaders accountable.

...Not very useful. Boring. An insider would not find this useful historical information. Was expecting a lot more relevance to current politics

Professor Coan's terrific new book about special prosecutors is a perfect blend of history, constitutional law, and modern politics. He explains (in lively fashion) how the proper balance between presidential powers and accountability to the rule of law has bedeviled past generations, not just our own. He then describes the nettlesome legal issues at stake when prosecutors do their work, including the peculiar substantive and political limits of special prosecutors' authority. The book is sure to become part of an enduring constitutional law canon, but also an accessible "go to" book for modern readers seeking to better understand what is at stake in the Mueller investigation. Finally, and importantly, it is a wise homily about how "we the people" share responsibility for how constitutional norms and presidential powers evolve. It should be on all Americans' bookshelves in this new year.

I am a layman, not a lawyer or law professor. But I get it now. I understand the difference between a special prosecutor and an independent counsel. I know the critical moments in our country's history when special prosecutors have been appointed and why the Independent Counsel Statute was drawn up post-Watergate and died post-Clinton/Lewinsky. I am familiar with the moments of great drama when special prosecutors were fired only to immediately rise up again to complete the work at hand (Ã la Archibald Cox followed by Leon Jaworski who brought down the president by merely guiding others where to look). Professor Coan has given me an understanding of the conditions under which special prosecutors work, under which Bob Mueller currently works. It is a tightrope performance. Mueller works his highwire magic on a rope held on the one side by the president and on the other by us, the American people. We, the people, are not unified in our intent but partisan with some of us jerking the rope about while others try to steady it. But the whole time during this tussle, we all look across the way as witnesses to what the President is doing with his end. It has been and will always be a drama that is highly partisan--at least it begins that way. It is a drama that is precarious not just for Meuller, but for our country because every such prosecution weighs in the balance our partisan instincts against our loyalty to the Constitution, our laws, and the institutions we have built over the last two hundred plus years. Professor Coan has helped me to see that, amazingly, such an arrangement can work and has in the past to greater and lesser degrees. Most importantly, he has helped me to see that it is not destined to work and to understand the possible consequences of failure if, when the work is done, partisans on either side are unable or unwilling to be clear-eyed in their assessment of the results.

Prosecuting the President is a really impressive book, merging artfully-told narrative history with a clear, insightful and important argument about law and politics. It’s written in a lively and engaging style that’s highly informative both to readers new to the subject and to legal experts. You can learn everything you need to know about special prosecutors by reading fascinating stories of special prosecutors in the recent and distant past. The last chapter is brilliantly pulls together the lessons of history in a pithy and concise, yet meaty analysis.

Andrew Coan has done the impossible. His gripping book reads like a novel, but it also provides a brilliant, comprehensive account of the law and history of special prosecutors. What an enormous and timely contribution. Anyone who wants to know where the Mueller Investigation came from and what it can reasonably accomplish should read this book. But it is valuable for more than the current historical moment. Prosecuting the President offers a superb introduction to the confounding problem of holding the President accountable, surely a timeless topic.I cannot remember the last time I read a nonfiction book on a legal subject in one sitting. Prosecuting the President should be required reading for the American public as the Mueller Investigation comes to its inevitable close.

Step by step I was guided through the workings of the special prosecutors and independent councils of the past and was brought up to date on the current investigation. Professor Coan demonstrates an excellent command of the subject matter. The book was easy to read and his writing style helped to hold my interest. Highly recommend it!

I really enjoyed this book. Professor Coan does an excellent job detailing the history of the special prosecutor. First of all, I want to emphasize how clearly written and organized this is. That makes the reading such a pleasure. Second, the author really humanizes the special prosecutor role, by relaying a series of anecdotes that explain the difficult position that special prosecutors find themselves in. They are often in the crossfire of the president who they are investigating (and who can fire them), and attacking the reputation of a special prosecutor is often the main tool that a President who is under investigation will use to discredit it. Ultimately the message that Coan conveys is that holding the president accountable for misconduct or crimes is up to the American people, and not the special prosecutor. At best, the role of the special prosecutor is just to bring misconduct or crimes to light and let the public decide what to do. Really great, timely read, especially in this environment.

This is an utterly captivating conversation between the creators of what became arguably the most successful rock-and-roll radio station in history -- KHJ, Los Angeles. Drake's formula was disarmingly simple: play more hits by trimming commercial breaks to no more than one minute and ten seconds, demanding less chatter from the disc jockeys, and shortening station jingles; keep up a succession of contests to keep listeners engaged; and develop a handful of catchwords and phrases to give the station a hip distinction ("Boss Radio," "Much More Music," "And the hits keep on happening"). "It wasn't brain surgery," Drake reminds Jacobs two or three times during the conversation, which Jacobs initially constructs as an interview but which quickly evolves into an intriguing duet about how the two men were able to implement Drake's formula. Years later radio would splinter into an assortment of stations, each identified with a particular stripe of popular music. But Drake and Jacobs make it clear that the music that they selected had little to do with KHJ's success. (Indeed, Jacobs concedes that when the station was launched, he programmed the exact same records that KRLA, the then-leader in the market, played.) Both of the men also acknowledge their debt to the times -- a period when everyone was into Motown, Sonny and Cher, The Righteous Brothers, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and The Byrds. "It happened at what was maybe the most exciting time in American popular music," Jacobs remarks. Replies Drake, "Can you imagine if we'd started KHJ in the John Denver era? We'd have been F***ed."= Lew Irwin (I was the news director at KRLA, which became the No. 2 station in Los Angeles following KHJ's rise to the top. We competed -- I believe, successfully -- on our own terms. And a good time was had by all.)

One of the biggest names in 1960's radio, Bill Drake, "tells it like it is" in great detail to legendary KHJ, LA Program Director Ron Jacobs. There were few who scaled the heights of radio programming like these two, and this candid discussion is like sitting at the bar and hearing great "war stories" from old friends.

This was a fascinating look into the radio format that remade Top 40 in the mid-60's. It's a view that could only come from the questions of the Drake Format's top program director, Ron Jacobs of KHJ/Los Angeles, to Bill Drake himself. It is rare to get such insight from the two people most responsible for the best Top 40 stations we've heard.

Good insight into Drake's rise and the emergence of KHJ. Busts a lot of the myths like the RED phone as he was largely 'hands off" with the talent. I would have liked to learn more about how the other Drake stations in and out of the RKO chain were put together but there was only fleeting mention of them.

A concise condensation of the life and times of the Drake Format told by the creator and his First Lieutenant . Must reading for every radio junkie out there. They don't make 'em like Bill, Ron, or KHJ anymore.

For anyone currently working in radio, hoping to someday work in radio or just a radio fan and lover of those great days of Top 40 radio, this is a must read! These were the days of REAL radio, a far cry from all the syndication and pre recorded shows of today with no DJ to answer the phone or play your request. I was lucky enough to inherit my love of music being born in Hawaii and raised on KPOI as a child. All the fun of radio in those days are long gone and sadly will never return. The hijinks and contests were just as creative and enrthralling as the great music. Any stop at a shopping center, which all had record stores back then, would have me begging and pleading for the latest 45 rpm that had me glued to the radio waiting for my favorite songs and once I was able to aquire said 45 rpm, I would play that thing until I had to pile stacks of pennies on the needle so it would jump over all the scratches. KPOI ruled the airwaves in the Hawaii of my youth when the disc jockeys were treated like royalty and were as great as the music itself. Then I was lucky enough to move to Hollywood to live with my father and KHJ "Boss Radio" was in it's heyday, a music lover's paradise, with Ron Jacobs at the helm. I knew all the jocks names. Still do. And the contests sucked us all in trying to win the latest giveaway. The contests were actually more fun than even winning the prize. In the 60's, AM Top 40 ruled the airwaves and no one did it better than Ron Jacobs and Bill Drake. At the time, of course, I didn't know anything about the brains behind the spectacular, now just a memory of the great radio of yesteryear. But as destiny would have it, the love and excitement of the music and waiting to hear the next crazy thing the DJ's were ready to prank us with led me to microphone and I spent 32 years on the radio doing my own radio show. Of course it was great fun, but I longed to be a part of the spectacular days of TOP 40, full of fun that I'm afraid we will never see again. But these are the guys who created all the magic. As a kid, listening to KPOI and KHJ, not even a new Barbie could compete with the rush of racing to turrn on the radio where the disc jockeys were superstars and every song played was a megahit. All on AM radio at the time and these two men made the joy of listening something that a radio program director of today could never dream up. And even if they did, the GM would cut the strings before you could even get started. I loved my 32 years as a disc jockey and might have never gotten there without the thrill of the best TOP 40 statiions that lived with me every waking hour. Music and fun ruled the airwaves back then, and these two superstars were at the helm. Reading this book transported me back to those wonderful days of having my ear glued to that little transister radio, waiting to hear the latest from Donovan or The Mama's and the Papa's. These were the men that made it all come to life. Whether you were a fan of the late, great TOP 40 or a Program Director of today hoping to steal some great promotion ideas and push your jocks to tthe edge of greatness, this is the book for you. A great read for anyone who was mesmerized by those great voices and spectacular music that came out of that tiny little black box that was always in your pocket. Five stars!

For radio folks and radio geeks only, but deeply satisfying for those of us who fit those descriptions. Kept from five stars by some transcription errors (though I'm sure Carol Williams did the best she good with noisy audio from a bar) and some inside stories that went untold, making the ending feel somewhat abrupt. Still, wisdom from two giants of the industry, who between them revolutionized pop music radio in the 1960s and 70s, now both gone, preserved for the ages.

I learned a lot from this book. In particular Matthew Ridgway and David Petraeus. With each of the five generals Hanson gives you the background of the general before their famous battle or campaign, then the events surrounding the battle or campaign and then what happened to these generals after their famous action. He keeps it tight and pithy but still gives you a lot of information surrounding five really interesting characters. For me the most knowledge gaining read was about Ridgway. I know almost nothing about the Korean war and those times and so that was really an interesting read for me. He covered the politics of the early 50's, how the US almost got thrown out of Korea and how this character, Ridgway, who was at a cocktail party in D.C. got tagged and overnight landed up in Korea as the key field commander their having to deal with an army that was in full retreat. Yet in 90 days he turned it around and replaced MacArthur in Japan. I had no idea how bad the situation was. My only understanding was that no one likes to talk about the Korean war.Petraeus was an interesting read for me as well because although I was certainly living through that time (2007 - 2008) I did not know much about the general and of course current politics blurred actual events. No matter how you feel about the war in Iraq this is an informational read about how we got there and what the Surge was all about.Hanson's write up on all five generals was really done very well. You did not get lost in the pages. He kept it crisp and concise and very interesting to read. You will learn a lot and that is always a good thing. There is not moralizing in the book, no politics. Just the players, how they developed, how the battles developed and what happened to them afterwards. Great read.

Really great book, informative, well written, didn't drag at all and throughout he makes clear how and why this is important for today. With this being written when it was it's now very interesting to see how Petraeus winds things up, he could be called out of retirement if needed, but the way he was dealt with by the current administration you know other things are at work. Also with Obama's pullout of Iraq which made no strategic sense and rise of ISIS it's tough to see a situation where someone snatched defeat from the jaws of victory quite like BHO, another book VDH?Seeing how long thought out Salamis was for the Athenian victory was very interesting, and prescient as well. All the other generals discussed were pretty well known and interesting throughout but Matthew Ridgeway seemed the most forgotten, of the forgotten war, and how he turned that around was really enlightening. Strange how soldiers need good leadership and focus on the why/what they are actually accomplishing to be successful... Highly recommended book.

Independence of thought, the elevation of truth over consensus, and a quiet confidence in the righteousness of their cause, make up some of the common traits of the Savior Generals so ably illustrated in this fascinating book. Recommended.

I dipped into the book with a particular concentration on the modern era. I confess my knowledge of the Korean conflict has always been sketchy, mostly involving the resentments of veterans who in the aftermath of Vietnam felt forgotten and the pain in the Korean-American community over the long separation of their nation and their families. This portrait of Matthew Ridgeway helped paint the geopolitical context, as well as contributing to the thesis of the book. In turn, the book's thesis that these heroic leaders not only rescue a cause that seems to have been lost, but reshape the very nature of the conduct of war in some significant way going forward, suggests that the role of David Petraeus in leading the surge in Iraq may be far more consequential than is immediately apparent. Of course, as the author acknowledges, it is too early to make that judgment with any certainty. But it is interesting to note that his precipitous fall from grace is actually entirely consistent with the pattern of the savior general.

This book humbles me. It helps me be more courageous and learn from history.

While I'm a southern boy at heart, and my great-great-grandmother's home in Jonesboro, Georgia was threatened to be burned by his troops, Dr. Hanson's description of Sherman was, i believe, spot on. Sherman exhibited great courage by cutting his communications and his supply trains and moving into unknown territory, not knowing whether he would find sufficient rations for his troops or whether guerilla forces would tear his forces apart. The only thing he knew was that he would find succor in Savannah. It's 250 miles to Savannah! As to his review of Ridgeway and Petraeus, his analysis was good; however, I believe he gave too much credit to the two generals and too little to the generals they succeeded. Things are seldom that simple.

I like Hanson. He has turned me back onto History, which was the degree I earned in college. I might have disagreed on a few generals, Sherman before Grant must have been a difficult choice. Both generals were discarded and then returned to save the Union when others failed. But maybe he is right in presenting that a savoir general appears, saves the day, and then flames out.

Basically Mr. Hanson reveals how the perceived lost cause is never lost when a great leader can see how to win. Very motivational, However we can see that all these commanders were used and then in a way, cast aside. My favorite general has always been William T. Sherman. He took care of his boys and did not cast there lives away. A man who understood how the rifled musket had changed warfare. Of all the best things he earned was the affectionate name of"Uncle Billy" by his men. He brought real war to the people who had only read about it in the newspapers.
