If you are seeking an intense read, this is not for you. The argument for Hebrew blackness is well supported, although this should not pose as a sole source that is invincible against critics that motion for white Hebrews. This does not pose an argument against the "contemporary" racial makeup of Jews or Hebrews (which are not necessarily the same thing BTW). This "illuminates" an omitted history of racial composition of this particular group of people. If it is widely accepted that humanity's origins were in Africa, then it is naturally inferred that the Hebrews MIGRATED to the Middle East, and their current skin pigmentation is an adaptation of new cultural/regional activities, human advancements in housing, and their environment. Having black skin does not denote racial superiority nor does having whiter skin. People aren't comfortable with a black God, they aren't comfortable with a black Jesus. They will need to resolve that within themselves. I'm ok with the truth.
The author says, "The evidence from the Bible describes the ancient Hebrews as being Afro-haired and Black." I must admit that I bought this book to debunk it. I have read the Bible many times and did not believe that any such evidence was in there. I was wrong. It's there, alright. I had just missed it.I will admit that the author starts out with some sheer speculation, but he follows it up with clear evidence, quoting passage after passage that proves his point. Particularly telling are the passages in Leviticus where the priests are required to evaluate white spots for evidence of leprosy. The text goes into great detail about "bright" spots that are darkish white, somewhat dark, pale white, yellowish, etc. It is clear from the text that all of the above are anomalies, and the normal skin color is darker than "somewhat dark".I certainly didn't remember that these passages were in there, and am not sure I would have understood their significance without the author pointing out how they dovetail with other passages. I encourage you to read it for yourself. I started out a skeptic, but this author has me convinced,

It was very interesting to read about the background and history of the ancients beginning and having information available to do further research, especially with the Bible. It’s no surprise to me that there’s a little bit of chocolate in every nationality. In fact, you can get every color on the color wheel starting with the color black!

In the late afternoon of a late summer day when the sun turns a room to amber, someone has left behind a thin book with an awkward name. It tells of heard, but unseen, things beyond the windows, of katydids and fiddling crickets.The author was, at the time, a young man during the Great Depression. He wrote of those days more than fifty years later with a clear mind and the lovely touch of a poet who worked in prose. He had been, in the early 1930's, an apprentice entomologist roaming the fields of Massachusetts. He not only noticed things most people rarely see. He sought those things out.He wrote well of humans, the old ones gathered nightly to watch the locomotive thunder by. He wrote equally well of cows "gloriously drunk" on long-fallen apples. But he wrote best of all about insects, of collecting crickets at night in a graveyard. He honored the locust, lauding their "tenure on Earth exceeding the period of occupation of human beings and an ability to compete successfully with people."Finally, he wrote movingly of summer shutting down and autumn nearing. He saw the once fresh and brilliant flowers fading to the "colors of the aged" and the "rough and tweedy" fields "as though an old brown woolen jacket had been thrown over them to ward off the chill."Above all, this overlooked book is about the virtues of listening and paying attention, hearing the hidden things that also have value in their lives, and in ours.
This book by the author of To Know A Fly recounts Dethier's experiences as a graduate student in the 1930's doing field research in New Hampshire on the sounds made by crickets, katydids, locusts, and grasshoppers.In order to make recordings of these "songs" it was first necessary to capture the insects and much of this book describes his work in the field tracking down all the local varieties in a wide range of ecologies. He also gives technical explanations of how the sounds are produced.The technology was not available at the time, but I found myself wishing throughout the book that I could actually hear the sounds while reading about them. A companion CD would be much appreciated!This book is interesting but lacks the charm of his other books, particuarly To Know a Fly and The Ecology of a Summer House.
Starting from the field laboratory at Franklin, New Hampshire and covering other areas in New England, Vincent Dethier introduces us to the rhythmic grace of the orthopterans. Each species of crickets, grasshoppers, katydids, etc. with their own songs to play while each individual played those songs with different styles. It is the 1930s at the time of the Depression. While at the field laboratories, Dethier who is a graduate student working with a professor during the summertime, record and interpret these songs. They work together to capture the songs of the unseen individuals in the fields. Behaviors of the orthopteran change as summer passes and autumn approaches, which are heard in the song they play for Mother Nature. This natural history book is written in a well-organized first person perspective.The moment I picked up this book, I did not have much knowledge or understanding of crickets nor did I know what katydids were. This was not just a book that an entomologist could enjoy. “Crickets and Katydidss, Concerts and Solos,†educated me on the subject of orthopterans in a more artistic approach. The text was written accurately but was slightly difficult to keep up with some vocabulary. Finishing the book had a very satisfying feeling and also relief. Some points were redundant and lost my attention for a bit but learned a lot on the behaviors or crickets, grasshoppers, and locust. This book has definitely changed my way of enjoying scenery and cricket chirps.The book is written like a personal journal and the way Dethier shows his perspective while changing yours is beautifully executed. I recommend this book if you want a chill read as a music lover but you must also have an interest in entomology.

As I listen, I think back to the times I read and reread this remarkable book. I first learned of it many years ago from an obituary of the author, Vincent Dethier, a former zoology professor at UMass. Superbly written in a style familiar to devotees of old nature books, the descriptions flow as smoothly as maple syrup. I'll surely read it again and again. I hope you do too.

Thoughtful, intriguing, and (surprisingly in a contemporary novel) quirkily inspiring. Now I really need to read Mary Barton and Sylvia’s Lovers.
What drew my interest to The Victorian and the Romantic: A Memoir, A Love Story, and a Friendship Across Time was the pitch about “two irresistible true-life romances†set across time. I was very interested in how two lives set apart by over a century could be linked in such a way that a book could be dedicated to it. Sadly, the pitch was not realized for me because I found neither romance irresistible. I was also hoping for a link between the two main characters of the book that would be endearing or meaningful in a way but that did not happen for me either.There is a contemporary romance angle told by the voice of the author about her love affair with an American. There is also a historical piece surrounding Elizabeth Gaskell and her supposed love affair with Charles Eliot Norton. I say supposed because honestly you have to really “read between the lines†to imagine such a feeling existed between the two and even then I was not wholly convinced. It was a very creative imagining though.I felt that the Author did a great job making an argument for the supposed love affair that was never able to be realized between Gaskell and Norton. I also felt that she was able to show parallels for what she believed that Gaskell could have felt that were similar to that which the author was also struggling with. I think that there is a great fictional memoir intertwined with a biography about the Author’s journey with love and academia that was at times very appealing to read. Though, I absolutely would have enjoyed the story more if the historical portion had been based on solid facts and not artistic license.This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. And what was the nature of her relationship with this man who was 17 years her junior? In 1857, just after writing the biography on her friend Charlotte Bronte, Gaskell and her two daughters set off for an extended holiday in Rome. There, they enjoy the company of artists and writers like Robert and Elizabeth Browning and an American critic Charles Eliot Norton.The author, Nell Stevens, has written a book that is part historical fiction and part memoir. In 2013, while a she was working on her dissertation about a community of artists and writers living in 19th century Rome, a relationship develops with Max, an American, who is living in Paris but then returns to Boston. Time and distance eventually take its toll on the relationship, resulting in a break up and acute heartache. Nell finds her academic pursuits sidelined by the break up. She turns to her favorite author, a subject of her research, and sees similarities in their bond of unrequited love.This was such an interesting concept to combine two genres. What drew me to this novel was the great Gaskell, one of my favorite authors, but I found I equally enjoyed the author's memoir. The modern romantic is not so different from the Victorian romantic. Both seem to think that marriage and children are necessary for fulfillment, but does a woman need both to feel whole and content? And what of creative and professional pursuits? Can that be enough of a substitute for a family? Gaskell had all three, making her a role model for the author, but was Gaskell content? Lots of food for thought on this one!
Nell Stevens’ long anticipated memoir/historical novel The Victorian and the Romantic is one of a few Advance Reader e-books I received from my friends at Doubleday Books and netgalley.com, and I thought it was such a fun book! The Victorian and the Romantic switches back and forth between chapters that focus on the life of Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell, and chapters that talk about Nell’s experience with love and heartbreak while studying to get her PhD. I thought the way that Stevens was able to connect her own situation of falling in and out of love with a similar situation involving an author that she greatly admires was a very interesting concept, and she did it quite well. I don’t really want to spoil any part of the book for you, but I will say that I particularly enjoyed that the book doesn’t really end in a way that you might expect it to, but that both Nell and Mrs. Gaskell still feel fulfilled regardless. The Victorian and the Romantic is a pleasant book not just about love, but about growing up and making hard choices. I flew through this book relatively quickly, and I really liked it! It’s available in bookstores now, so be sure to give it a read!
not sure why Elizabeth Gaskell was chosen to parallel author's own story. seems like there is no connection. not sure why the author gains inspiration from Gaskell. but the two stories held my interest. i also think the characters were too self absorbed. i wish I could run around to London and read Victorian novels all day.
It was hard to discern between the biographical portions on Elizabeth Gaskell and the fantastical delusions of author Nell Stevens. The book is easy to read and that's a credit to Nell -- or is it Helen? -- but she simply goes off the rails when it comes to the personal narrative about Max. Also, the details in the book do not match up with the "facts" of Nell's/Helen's Modern Love essay in the New York Times, which she cribbed from Chapter 15 of the book.
I really loved The Victorian and the Romantic, as a book partially about literature, but also about the author's relationship to literature and to academia. The book is in part a biography of Elizabeth Gaskell, but also it is about how readers in the present think about the past, and is written really beautifully in a way that reflects both those things.

This was such a touching and loveable book. It was sad in parts of the terrible things the awful man driving the wagon did to the children. Hard to put down.

It is hard to believe that children are being used for profit in the early days of Virginia City and Mack Armstrong is going to do his best to put a dent in I when he comes across four children who need his help. Little does he know that these orphans will soon be his. Sweet reading.
