I purchased the printed Dover edition of this book many years ago, but have never finished it. The print was too hard on my eyes. This Kindle edition of the Dover is excellent. Although more expensive than the other choices on Amazon, this Kindle edition is accurate and follows the Dover edition. Also reading this on a Kindle is much easier on eyes.Now as to the writing. Sir Richard F Burton was a great observer and his prose gives great detail to his travels. His style is engaging and personal. The book gives us a glimpse of life in the Middle East at the end of the 19th Century.
I have an old copy of this book, purchased for 50 cents at a used book shop. Liked it so well that I got a digital copy. It is a very important book yet no one cared much about the topic or the author when I purchased it in the 1980s. It is an outstanding, first person account of Sir Richard Burton's travels through the Islamic world before it was modernized. Cannot possibly recommend this more highly to anyone wishing to understand the true nature of the Islamic world. Burton took this pilgrimage posing as a muslim.
Sir Richard Burton wrote his "Personal Narrative" of his travels to Mecca and Medina in modern Saudi Arabia, which he began in 1853. This is, or should be, one of the classics of European exploration of the Middle East. Burton was well enough versed in the Arabic language and the local Islamic customs to travel disguised as a "darwaish" or scholar from Afghanistan - a cover he used to account for slight variations in pronunciation of some Arabic words. He was an acute observer of local people and their customs, he was able to argue Koranic and Sharia law with other travellers and he had an exhaustive historical knowledge of the regions he traveled through. How he managed to write his extensive notes as he traveled without being detected was one of the achievements of his exploration.Unfortunately, this publication does no service to the writer or to the reader. In fact this book is an insult to the memory of a distinguished explorer and anthropologist. Whoever published this volume (wisely, the publisher's identity is not given) should be thoroughly ashamed of it. It contains many typographical errors, sentences end in mid-paragraph, new paragraphs begin without capitals and many paragraphs are formatted so badly they are difficult to read. Burton's notes in other scripts, such as Greek or Arabic, are not reproduced. At the end of most chapters we have one or two large paragraphs taking up most of a page. These are apparently Burton's footnotes but no numbers are given. Nor are footnotes indicated in the main text.Together these faults have completely destroyed Burton's work. They even destroy the credibility of those parts of the text that contain no production errors. Given the hundreds of errors in this book and the obvious negligence with which it has been published the reader cannot be sure that what he or she reads is what Burton wrote. This book cannot be recommended for any reason at all.
I read this story 40+ years ago while I was stationed in Iran. Still fascinates me.
Trenchant observations and clever wit from a young man who risked his life to visit Mecca in disguise. If you love history, read this.
I haven't read this volume yet, but wanted to leave a review to note that this is Volume 2, beginning with Chapter XXI. I don't see any reference on the site to Volume 1, so perhaps it is not available. Still, it would be better if this book's page more clearly described what the buyer is getting.
This was an interesting story about an Englishman who traveled throughout the Mideast disguised as a Muslim (I think about the late 1800s). Even though he includes extensive footnotes, he uses many phrases in French and other languages (without explanation), many times I do not understand the crux of the issue. I have often been confused while reading this book, so I think it will take a better scholar than I to enjoy the story!

I ordered this collection of Hans Christian Andersen stories after looking at many options, specifically because I wanted a good selection of stories with beautiful illustrations for my children's library. I had Googled some Honor Appleton illustrations and loved them. Unfortunately, none of her gorgeous paintings are in color in this book and some do not translate well to black and white reproductions. Others were black and white pen drawings and are just fine here. But I would not have bought this had I known I was not getting any color paintings. Now I will look about again and perhaps order the Michael Hague collection. These tales were the friends of my childhood (many, many years ago) reread again and again and again, and it is very good to revisit them. Their frequently strong and obvious moral content did not put me off. On the contrary, it had the desired effect of increasing my desire to be a better person. Some of the saddest tales made me cry, but I still loved them. And the sad endings prepared me for the fact that, in real life, there are also sad endings. Their originality is captivating. Certain images have stayed with me through the decades. The sanitized, fluffy, happy ending Disney versions have removed the heart of these stories. If you have no faith, you will not like these tales. If you don't like stories with obvious moral content, you will not like these tales. If you believe that children should be coddled and protected from any of the darker aspects of life, you should stick to the Disney versions. But you will be denying yourself a world of wonder and beauty, a world with a heart and a soul, a world with images that remain pertinent to this day. I believe that every child should hear at least some of them.
Another GORGEOUS (and affordable!) antique-book reproduction from Calla Editions by Dover-- it's lusciously illustrated with both pen and ink drawings and full-page colored plates. The other review on here, titled "disappointing" (which gives it 3 stars) is meant for a different edition--one from 2010-- 7 years before this edition was printed!In-depth details: light blue, clothbound covers; the pictoral pastedown on the front cover is black, blue and ivory; navy blue ink stampings on front cover and spine; illustrated endpapers; blank back cover. A puzzling but impressive detail is that every single page of text is printed on the same stiff, high-gloss paper typically reserved for color-plates. This is strange but great as it will hold up better over time, will resist yellowing or staining, and is acid free. Pretty cool.
My daughter wanted to know what the REAL Little Mermaid story was like, so I bought this. We have had several good discussions about how "Disneyfied" fairy tales have become; how monsters are really just misunderstood; how fairy tales have to have a happy ending these days as opposed to the original purpose of fairy tales: to teach children about dangers in the world and that they can avoid or overcome it. I believe it was Chesterton (?) who said that fairy tales were not written to teach children that monsters did not exist, but to teach children that monsters could be defeated.
My childhood was a scam!!! My mother never read these to me when I was little. So all I knew was the Disneyfied version. Now an adult, I have been studying all sorts of fables on my own - Charles Perrault, the Grimm Brothers and Aesop. Having read all of them, I must say that Hans Christian Anderson beats them all in spades. "The Little Mermaid" and the other classics are so much better in writing than they are on screen, as is so often the case.Primarily, it's his writing style; he doesn't pretend that children are stupid, he writes using fine language, which makes reading it enjoyable for even adults. Now I know that they taught children back in the day to read straight from the King James version of the Bible. If only we had such high standards today!!! So his choice of words can be verbose. But it's not just that. Anderson also combines vivid imagery with a story that's well-paced. The stories are full of details. That's a winning combination.Sure, there are some stories that are dull and not worth reading. But there are also hidden gems. To anyone who's lost a child to death, "The Angel", for example, would be a reassuring read. "The Shepherdess and the Sheep" is also quite endearing.
I was thrilled to find a truly COMPLETE collection of Hans Christian Andersen's folk/fairy tales! I have a collection, inherited from my mother (published in the first few years of the 20th C) with beautiful illustrations on nice rag stock paper--but it does not include every H.C.A. tale. This book is complete, though of inferior quality as a book. To begin with, it includes not many, nor the best illustrations--and all of those in black and white. The paper is light, thin and cheap (wood pulp paper, I would say).So to summarize, if you are most interested in just reading Hans Christian Andersen's complete oeuvre, this is a GREAT book. If you want a book that is a beautiful, well-crafted object in its own right, this will probably be a disappointment.

I got my book today and the front cover and a chunk of pages were bent almost in half from the corner. I bent them back, but there is still obvious damage. :(
This book is far more dry than it has to be. The information is fairly generic and hasn't really helped that much with in class discussions. A lot of the chapters feel as if they would have been more appropriate at the length of a single page. Unfortunately I suspect most people buying it have to buy it because of a class.

This was a Christmas present for my daughter because she loves learning about different breeds of horses. We have been slowly going through the book from beginning to end together. We finally got to the end of the book and noticed several pages are torn. I didn't think to go page by page to make sure the book didn't have any torn pages when I received it....I purchased this new book for $36.00 only to receive it damaged. Be sure to go page by page so you don't end up with a wonderful book with torn pages.Otherwise, we love this book! It contains so much wonderful information on many many different types of breeds.

This book is a MUST HAVE for any horse liver. It covers all the breeds of horses, all the horse terms, and all the tack information. It's perfect for any level of rider, or even someone that doesn't but just lives horses. The pictures are great too. Great coffee table book, or a gift. Totally recommend this!

I like this book very much. It avoids talk that is very hard to understand. It avoids rubbish, filler talk. It explains simply and clearly what tasks a person might choose to do. These tasks are described in an approachable way. You could do them without consulting 1000 other books, too. It explains what could go wrong, and how to do them safely. It isn't so difficult to be safe in doing these things. As importantly, it explains what the final goal is. People call the goal "enlightenment," but, being unenlightened, we don't necessarily know what that would be like. This says clearly when NOT to stop. It tells which steps might be more difficult. But it is a clear and understandable path to a worthwhile goal. It is worth more than the rest of my yoga books (although some of them are good and can still be useful). It is important to read the book with a kind of attuned and even sympathetic attention to understand more deeply. It is important to practice, not just to read.
I know a few things about Kundalini, having suffered from kundalini syndrome for 17 years and having also co-authored a book on energy healing. SantataGamana is the real deal, and he has a deep understanding of kundalini and is able to take a complex topic and boil it down to its essence. I have practiced what he teaches and while his methods are powerful (esp the Kriya techniques) and generate a LOT of kundalini, I've suffered none of the effects of kundalini syndrome. As an aside, what helped me to finally cure my kundalini syndrome was doing the TRE's (tension release exercises described by Dr. David Berceli).
I have practice and awaken the kundalini few times in my live, I don't think it was 100%, but in some degree. I am trying to get back to my practices and after reading several books about kundalini, this is the only book that I have found strait to the point and the one that describes real experiences, the way he describes them if the same as I have experienced them, like always the bliss comes after the practice, not in the moment, the one will all and looses of the I.But from my point of view there is three selves, subconscious (Ego), Conscience (The I), SuperConscience (The ONE), The subconscious is where all the memories reside, and it has his own personality, The "I" is without memories, exist in the eternal now.When we have a kundalini awakening experience we live a a state of bliss, I called an orgasm 24/7 like he mentions, you feel one with everything, the trees, the rock, I mean everything, you are ONE with all but I never lost my sense of individuality.
The description is a lie. It claims to avoid all "filler talk" and teach you. But I read over 100 pages of nothing but quotes, referances, and topics to excite the reader to learn before realizing I was at the end of the book without one single lesson being provided. It absolutely won't give you any information on the subject at hand. I read 6 paragraphs on Google that provided me with more information on the topic of kundalini that this entire book did. I already wasted my money. Do yourself a favor nd save your from reading this headache of crap
Kundalini Exposed is worth a great deal more to me than my time and money. I do not have a teacher I can find, and working through the awakening process in daily life is often difficult with isolation, confusion, trial and error. The book to me is like a shop manual for the car mechanic, the basic principles of the process are there, some how to, but then you still have to know how to be a mechanic, know how tight is tight, and have your wrenches in hand. You are under the car looking up.The words ring true and clear to my level of experience of energy and awareness so far, and gave me some clear to me next steps, kind of like I am sitting in a trail camp hearing from another hiker about what is over there if you keep going, and avoid the cliff over there, jump off the cliff over there.The straightforward compassionate format illuminates so much of my path that I have not been able to move on from because I am trying to map it out and stay in it more than move along and let it go. Like the author points out, you do not need to bring the taxi onto the plane when traveling. Even writing this review is a kind of over mapping, so forgive the effort, because Kundalini Exposed shows much to me that eliminates my distraction of desiring understanding. Thank you to the author, it feels wonderful to know you are.
I liked this book very much for its clarity and non-dogmatic approach.Also its flexibility rooted in an understanding that this is not a one-size-fits-all universe.My only quibble is the author's attitude towards the ego and the mind. After many years on eastern and western esoteric paths I have come to realize it is not wise to label the mind and the ego as enemies. Sure, rampant egotism and selfishness are to be avoided, but a healthy sense of self is important for harmonious living.But that said I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others.
The breakthrough book clarifying many false believes about Kundalini and enlightement in general. So simple yet saying everything.
The author states repeadidly that he is going to impart information about the Kundalini in simple laymens terms but you soon find out he seems to be speaking a foreign language . I don't know anything about yoga and maybe thats why the book was just jiberish to me, maybe it's just me but it honestly seemed like another snow job, phoney spiritual book. I threw it away instead of taking to goodwill where it would have wasted someone else's time.

The spectacular advances in the development and application of integrated circuit (IC) technology have led to the emergence of microelectronics process engineering as an independent discipline. Additionally, the pervasive use of integrated circuits requires a broad range of engineers in the electronics and allied industries to have a basic understanding of the behavior and limitations of ICs. One of the goals of this book is to address the educational needs of individuals with a wide range of backgrounds. This text presents an introduction to the basic processes common to most IC technologies and provides a base for understanding more advanced processing and design courses. In order to contain the scope of the material, we deal only with material related to silicon processing and packaging. The details of many problems specifically related to VLSI/ULSI fabrication are left to texts on advanced processing, a4ough problem areas are mentioned at various points in this text, and goals of the international Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors are discussed as appropriate. Chapter 1 provides an overview of IC processes, and Chapters 2-6 then focus on the basic steps used in fabrication, including lithography, oxidation, diffusion, ion implantation and thin film deposition, and etching. Interconnection technology, packaging, and yield are covered in Chapters 7 and 8. It is important to understand interactions between process design, device design, and device layout. For this reason, Chapter 9 and 10 on MOS and bipolar process integration have been included. Chapter 11 provides a brief introduction to the exciting area of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS). Major changes in the second edition of this text include new or expanded coverage of lithography and exposure systems, trench isolation, chemical mechanical polishing, shallow junctions, transient-enhanced diffusion, copper Damescene processes, and process simulation. The chapters on MOS and bipolar process integration have been substantially modified, and the chapter on MEMS is entirely new. The problem sets have been expanded, and additional information on measurement techniques has been included. The text evolved from notes originally developed for a course introducing seniors and beginning graduate students to the fabrication of solid-state devices and integrated circuits. A basic knowledge of the material properties of silicon is needed, and we use Volume I of this Series as a companion text. An introductory knowledge of electronic components such as resistors, diodes, and MOS and bipolar transistors is also useful. The material in the book is designed to be covered in one semester. In our case, the microelectronics fabrication course is accompanied by a corequisite laboratory. The students design a simple device or circuit based upon their individual capability, and the designs are combined on a multiproject polysilicon gate NMOS chip. Design, fabrication, and testing are completed within the semester. Students from a variety of disciplines, including electrical, mechanical, chemical, and materials engineering; computer science; and physics, are routinely enrolled in the fabrication classes. Before closing, I must recognize a number of other books that have influenced the preparation of this text. These include The Theory and Practice of Microelectronics and VLSI Fabrication Principles by S. K. Ghandi, Basic Integrated Circuit Engineering by D. J. Hamilton and W.G. A really helpful text. I cracked open this book not knowing a thing about MEMS and was able to follow the majority of the discussions. There are couple of practice problems in the text, but probably not enough to use it as sole preparation for an exam. This was mainly used as a reference text for my Introduction to MEMS course, but it could give quite a lot of insight on its own. Some of the methods are a little older, but many of them are still in practice.
Its okay. Kinda glosses over the important details but supplemented with good motes it makes for an easy read. Much shorter than Campbell.
I bought this textbook for a graduate level mechanical engineering course. The material in there is solid. The explanations are not always self-evident (i.e. I cannot understand all of the material without lecture to clarify the material), but all of the information is there.

For a beginner in my Nano and Micro engineering classes this book is simple enough to read that I dont feel like i am completely lost in it. I suggest this if you are looking for a semiconductor/mosfet book that is less expensive yet thorough.
This book is for my current Chemical Engineering Semiconductor lab. It is very clear and concise which is nice. I rather have a thin, well written book, than a dense and over-informative text. I would highly recommend it for after semiconductor fabrication coursework.
This book offers a concise and pheripheral approach to introductory microelectric fabrication. It covers the essentials that are needed to delve into more intricate and complex fab issues. It is a good starting material for me, even though I might sometime get lost reading concepts from it only. It is great resource when you have it in company of another fab book. hence complememting each other. Have fun digging this!!!!!!!!
