Great book about a great architect. Includes a detailed biographical story about Mr. Olson and how the Pacific Northwest influenced and continues to influence his work. The projects featured in this book show why the American Institute of Architects (AIA) voted Jim Olson the architect of the year award a few years back.
It's just an okay book. Most of the works listed in the book are quite plain and Mc-ish. Olson's own residence is the most spectacular one (which is the reason I bought this book).

I assumed this book would be much like Kundigs work which I respect and enjoy. This book did not inspire me. It was well put together, a huge and impressive portfolio of his work which is very impressive. However, It was not what I expected and did not resonate with me. It felt dark and muted. To each their own, the spice of life

The novella Lord of Light was a very slow read. I couldn't finish this one. The great protector was the best story in this volume.

When she dies, she will take it with her.and: … a lone bomb can erase a lineage: the nicknames for your mother, the ghost stories, the only song that put your child to sleep. … Your citadel fed to the birds.the cultivation of a sense of belonging in a stable environment, physical and psychological is lost, when one has a history of leaving and arriving in new cities in new countries, the poems that follow disparate moments, stranded in transit like possessions tossed.a finding of solidarity in dispossession from her poem Oklahoma:‘… This was before the gold rush, the greed of engines, before white men pressing against brown women, nailing crosses by the river, before the slow songs of cotton plantations, the hymns toward God, the murdered dangling like earrings.’although atrocities mentioned are against brown women in her litany, it’s clear she’s also including the historical suffering of black women, making use of intersectionality in her poems. her sense of being made to feel inferior as brown woman among white men and white women appears in several poems.there are poems about kleptomania and sex and too much drinking. poems about a child returning from school or a vacation in another new city, and poems about marriage, struggle to portray what normalcy must look like. some of these poems don’t make sense, they hold together as an experiment in free association around a theme, leaving the reader lost and confused. an autobiography told in fragments. and, yet, everything is familiar to us, the religions, histories and personal stories. confusing and familiar.
This poet has the subtle gift of combining everyday words into mystery. For example, "All the exit routes: someone else's jeep, the bottle of pills, your daddy's DNA." She has either lived or imagined living a lot of interesting things in interesting places--although some things are mundane events she makes interesting. Along these poetic paths she cycles through themes of exile and resettlement, of religious confusion, of Middle Eastern wars and Israeli settlements, of substance and sexual abuse, and of course hoving over everything, questions of identity.One section of the book is devoted to the poet's failed marriage (which apparently went poorly from the start) and lesbian encounters. There is little narrative here; instead, in the manner that's perfect for expression through poetry, the various themes that have dominated her life pop up in different combinations and permutations. Mercifully, the book ends with acceptance, a new relationship with a lover and with herself.
This powerful book of poems reads almost as a memoir, dealing with growing up, straddling different cultures, and trying to come to terms with society as a whole. Alyan succeeds in weaving jarring snapshots of trauma with haunting, and often hopeful, poetry.

I got this book yesterday, not finished with it yet but sure have been enjoying the memories. I've lived in Henderson since 1963 and remember a lot of what's in the book. We as kids got to pick where we wanted to go to dinner for our birthday with just the parents and we always picked the Swanky Club, yum. There sure are a lot of places I miss and so sad they are no longer around, but we still have some good ole places to go. Thanks

This is definitely a dark read....was so sad it ended. Can tell this is the beginning to a great twisted romance. Can't wait for book 2!
I'm a lover of all things dark. And for me the darker the better. It's a genre that I found myself craving after years of reading and it was unexpected. The thirst for darkness for me is intoxicating and yes probably a little crazy, but hey we all have our favs and dark is mine.When Beauty landed, I knew that I was going to get dark, and a whole lot of it. But I honestly never expected the darkness and the sheer brutal cruelty that came with it.Never did I expect to get totally drawn to the depraved mind of a girl so tormented and broken.Never did I expect the beauty behind the torment, the pain, the hurt and the sheer anguish of a girl and her innocence.Kirtsy Dallas has written a heartbreaking and soul destroying read that I fell deeply in love with. A rawness like no other. A disturbing read that completely stole my heart and took my breath away.I cannot rate Beauty high enough.Whoever would've thought revenge could be so bitterly sweet.5 stars.
Omg wow!I absolutely loved this book!Beauty actually felt like it was part of the Blaire World and all the darkness that swirls in it.It blended perfectly in that twisted world and a great extension of it.Beauty was an such an amazing character.She’s strong,courageous and a spirit that’s unbreakable.The horrors she goes through would have destroyed many.But her resolve to keep living and fighting outweighed giving up.Hart is also another strong awesome character.That man lives in a world of darkness and sees the worst of what evil men can do.Yet he still has morals and scrupulous of what he will and will not do.These two characters meet in the darkest of circumstances and their journey continues in the darnkness.Stunning story of the depraved vile men that lurk amongst us.The strength it takes to survive the most of horrific acts.And the ability to try and keep the mind intact.This is the first time of read something by Ms. Dallas.I plan to follow her everywhere and read much more from her.I loved her writing style and the way her words are so descriptive.They had me living in the darkness with Beauty and Hart.Stunning book that had me on the edge of my seat and my heart racing.It’s thrilling,intense and completely riveting.I’m absolutely looking forward to read the next part of Beauty.
Geez Louise!! Kirsty Dallas has sure packed one huge punch with this 1st instalment of Beauty and Harts story.This book is dark and raw. It takes you to a place you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy where this woman suffers your worst nightmare. But they say revenge is sweet and there is a scene in this book that although gory and bloody, had me cheering her on and if I am honest, feeling very proud of this fictional character that I became invested in on page 1!This author has gone into some pretty dark and twisted parts of her mind to be able to create this fictional character that has endured and suffered the worst of the world and have her come out deciding that she is not a victim. This character wants no pity. She is truly a thing of Beauty. She is strong and determined, she is capable and resilient. Hart quickly becomes her partner in crime and you see why very quickly. They are two sides of the same coin. Ying and Yang if you like.There is no way you can get to the end of this first instalment and not feel invested and proud of Beauty and Hart. They are two characters that will stay with you for a long time after you finish and put the book down.I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2 and see how their story ends. I have a feeling that my mind won't be the same once I get my hands on it!!

Her ‘bad’ characters are evil personified and make even non aggressive people feel like enacting a similar treatment on them as well- well they did me! 😯 Likewise although the situation is very different and fortunately not one I can relate to, I found it easy to relate to and like the ‘good’ characters. Their self honesty I found very appealing.Revenge is something that is extremely understandable and although some would argue that it meets the ‘monster’ criteria too, and yes it does, this story makes you ponder how you would feel if it was you or your daughter? So revenge? Bring it on!Warning...this is a cliffhanger but not one that leaves you gasping in shock so it’s all good. I am looking forward to the next book already.
