I keep it by my bedside and read every morning. Selected Scripture and comments and action prompts. I find Papa Franciso speaking directly to me. He is an incredible compassionate and wise man.(I am not Catholic but I am a huge admirer of Pope Francisco.)
I purchased 5 of these when I first saw it right before Christmas. I began reading it and gave out the other 4 immediately. I loved it from the get go. The daily readings and meditations take less than 5 minutes. The readings are excerpts from the various writings of Pope Francis. A daily reflection is provided at the end of the excerpt. In this year of Mercy this is a most fitting and rewarding daily reflection that I look forward to. If you get behind, or ahead for that matter, you will find it difficult to stop reading. But why not read it more than once. This is also a beautiful opportunity to read all the various writings of Papa Francis.
I love the daily reminders of how we can take action on our beliefs. These short reflections make us think about the fact that we must convert our beliefs into actually helping someone that day! This keeps us from getting lazy about our beliefs!
I am a life-long ELCA Lutheran girl. A fellow Lutheran told me about Pope Frances' book and I LOVE it. I live in a building for retired adults and I read devotions before dinner one night a week. I have been using Pope Frances' readings and everyone enjoys his messages.
This has been an inspiration for me. I am not Catholic. However, the quotes from the Pope are inspirational for anyone of the Christian faith. They are just short enough to read quickly and not worry about whether it's going to fit into my day. There's always time for a short devotional. The comments at the end of each short devotion are food for thought.

I was a little put off by her recommendation on how to get around the law for luring deer during hunting season. It's illegal to spread food on the ground, but if you grow a garden with items they like, it is legal to shoot them. Doesn't seem sporting to me. She spends a lot of time on boring names of animals and plants, and not as much as I hoped about the uniqueness of the animals.
The author is obviously an intelligent woman who had put a lot of thought and effort into this book which, by the way, is not a cute cat book. It is interesting at worst and fascinating at best. However, I have never seen so many mistakes in one book. Words are misspelled; corrections are put in along with what they corrected; spaces appear in the middle of words; line breaks occur in the middle of words; duplications appear and various other oddities throughout the book. There were so many mistakes in the opening that I nearly put the book aside. I persevered and it would go along beautifully for pages and then relapse into gibberish.I'm glad I read it and would recommend it, but surely wish it had been edited or at least proofread. In these days of spell and grammar checks, there is no excuse for the quality of this publication. Very disappointing.
To explain my rating: Four stars for the actual book. Janet Lembke's writing is, as always, graceful and interesting. Unfortunately, the Kindle version is very poorly copyedited, so it only gets two stars. Average is three stars.
Naturalist Lembke's essays on the hidden lives of everyday creatures focus on our interaction with them, most often as pets, pests or sustenance.The brief title essay (also the source of the book's irresistible cover) discusses the evolution of the house cat from Egyptian times, when it was deified and mummified, to the untamability even today of certain feral cats and the much studied but still unsolved mystery of the purr.She explores the lives and the perpetual gardener's battle against groundhogs, deer and slugs (and no, she does not provide the long-sought solution), profiles animals that serve as pets or food, such as chickens and turtles, and recounts backyard dramas like the hunt of a resident hawk and the ice-laden crash of a red maple.Each encounter inspires rumination on the creatures' history, biology, folklore and daily existence. We learn about the disgusting and efficient glory of hermaphroditic slug sex, the life cycle of carpenter bees, and the cruelty of using have-a-heart traps on woodchucks for whom transportation to a territory not their own is a death sentence as certain as a bullet.Lembke also profiles the people who dedicate themselves to studying or caring for some of these creatures, like Suzanne, whose turtles have the run of the house and who scratch on the sliding glass door to go out. Or Sarah Hirsch who studies the sense of smell in mice and once made the mistake of getting attached to the cute little babies.An avid gardener, Lembke has a respectful, unsentimental view of animals, boundless curiosity in the world around her and a wry sense of humor. Her essays will appeal to anyone who's ever cursed a woodchuck or paused at the kitchen window to watch the drama going on outside, and been struck, even for a moment, by all the mysterious coexistence going on around us.
NOT a cute and cozy read about cats as the cover/title implies. I was unable to finish the book due to its INCREDIBLY poor editing (too frustrating). It's unfortunate... it may have otherwise been a very interesting read. For what I did read, I would give it 4.5 stars for its educational value.

Peter H. Irons is emeritus professor of political science at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author of numerous books on the Supreme Court and constitutional litigation, including Jim Crow’s Children: The Broken Promise of the Brown Decision and A People’s History of the Supreme Court. He is a co-editor of May It Please the Court: The Most Significant Oral Arguments Made Before the Supreme Court Since 1955 (with Stephanie Guitton), May It Please the Court: The First Amendment: Live Recordings and Transcripts of the Oral Arguments Made Before the Supreme Court in Sixteen Key First Amendment Cases, and May It Please the Court: Courts, Kids, and the Constitution: Live Recordings and Transcripts of Sixteen Supreme Court Oral Arguments on the Constitutional Rights of Students and Teachers, all published by The New Press. He has also contributed to numerous law reviews and other journals. He was chosen in 1988 as the first Raoul Wallenberg Distinguished Visiting Professor of Human Rights at Rutgers University. He has been invited to lecture on constitutional law and civil liberties at the law schools of Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, and Stanford and at more than twenty other schools. In addition to his academic work, Irons has been active in public affairs. As other reviews note, this has only excerpts, not full arguments. The title and description should say so. The title says "audio tapes", but the description says "MP3 audio CD." Reviews show that some buyers received CDs. I received tapes. If it matters to you, it will be best to ask the seller. Whichever format you get, it is a good introduction to all these cases. On the other hand the full oral arguments of all cases since 1955, including these, are at Oyez:com. That site highlights each paragraph of the transcript in yellow while the recording plays it, and lights up a photo of each justice as s/he speaks.
What you see is not what you hear. It said cassette tapes but, I received a book.
At the risk of sounding like a complete nerd, this book/audio fascinates me. Hearing the actual arguments between the lawyers and justices is amazing. The fact that I am hearing history is something I have trouble wrapping my not-so-smart brain around.
Fascinating look into The Warren Court and beyond. Sadly my CD player will not play MP3 CDs. Must find someone who can play the disc in their computer, do the conversion, then email me the MP3 files.Be sure you can play the disc before you buy.

this book is the worst. it seems like it has a million cuss words. I highly suggest that no one buy this book. it's not worth the price.
First and foremost, this book is the ramblings of an egomaniac. Yep the author. Why would I make such a claim? Two issues. One-who is Two Tonys? His real name is never revealed and when you do a search, even in the Bonanno Crime family you come up with a big fat ZERO. But even more glaring is Tony’s birthday, 2-8-1941. Nothing disturbing here until you find out he served on the USS Vesuvius for over three years and received an honorable discharge in 3-5-1958. That means he was fourteen when the judge gave him a choice between prison or the military. The Navy would not have accepted him. They were still coming to grips with Calvin Graham incident. I’m sure Shaun doesn’t know who that is because one thing he isn’t big on is research. That would get in the way of poison words and attack on conservatives and those of us who believe in God. Those two facts alone are enough to discredit this garbage. When the author starts his rant about religious leaders and refers to them as hustlers, let’s remember what the author did for a living: stock broker, rave promoter, ecstasy seller. All three are the biggest hustlers in the world and for a while, the author appeared to very good at all three. This is the second and last book I will read of his. The first was Un Making a Murder. Who would I recommend this to. Absolutely and I mean absolutely no one!
I enjoyed this book very much. It was nice to hear the story of one of the people Shaun befriended while in prison. Although I did not care for his lifestyle at all, I love how it was written in Two Tonys' voice & even though I've never heard the man speak, I could imagine him telling the story to me. I must now go back & read Jail Time & Prison Time.. they were great reads! The only thing I wish this book had was some pictures - maybe of Two Tonys childhood, parents, different ages, his family. His attitude about where he was at, & that he deserved it, but he made the most of it was an eye opener. Great book! I laughed alot too!
After accepting that Two Tony's voice was profane, the other words of his story are well thought out and have a message of importance -in his words, "for those who do not want to be pissed on and told it is warm spring rain." He makes a case for violence and threat of violence as a source of power, the ultimate control of others. He discusses money and religion as powers to control others. He is especially harsh on religious leaders who enrich themselves by convincing others to support them. In the end, the profanity is all but gone and his thoughts on the meaning of life and death are expressed well. If foul language is a turnoff, reading the almost profanity free last chapters may induce you to read the whole book. If not, you got the most goody for your time.
I enjoyed the biographical account of "Two Tonys'" life; starting as a child in Detroit, through his hitch in the Navy and then an unplanned drift into crime. He was attracted to the violence and high living life style of a hood. When drugs entered his life the crimes became more violent and serious. Finally he was convicted for murder and began spent the rest of his life in prison. This part of the book went down pretty well for me but I had trouble getting into the long rants on philosophy, religion, social values, etc. As he told his story to Shaun Attwood who wrote the book a fair amount of British spelling, slang and terminology creeps into the tale. O.K. overall, not great but interesting.
I loved this book. Whether he meant for it or not, I laughed throughout the book. His stories rang true, and the dialogue! I had to read portions to my husband because I thought they were funny. I've known guys like him, I was a probation officer for many years and this guy has my respect. He never whacked anybody that didn't need it.I also really appreciated the author for telling his story with such clarity and authenticity. There are some real sick people in the world, like Bundy and Dahmer. Two Tonys lived by a code that I know about and although we had very different paths paths, he never hurt a civilian. No drive by killings that hurt innocent children. He was, at the end of the day, a honorable man, and I thank the author for showing who he was.
An interesting wander through the life of a career criminal - but all rather drawn out.It purports to be a true story but it's written as an autobiography by someone else....!Some of the 'facts' seems to wander ---- maybe I should have concentrated more, but (for instance) I couldn't figure out IF he was married (or how many times) and to whom.There's rather a lot of interesting philosophising but it goes on far too long.I'm still not convinced that's it's all real :-) !!

Shaun’s writings bring the character of Two Tonys to life in an even handed manner while illustrating how the U.S prison system often perpetuates crime rather than fighting it.If you enjoy true crime books, you will love The Mafia Philosopher and supporting Shaun’s work also contributes to his dedication to much needed prison reform.

There are no plot spoilers in this review.I started with Tom Clancy 15 years ago, and he's been my favorite author since then. I appreciate his style of writing, technical accuracy, his character building, and his art of story telling. I am not as fond of the co-authored novels or the other series that bear his name. While generally better than most of the genre, they are not up to par with the Clancy of the early Jack Ryan and John Clark novels.I approached this book with a bit of caution, because with "Dead or Alive", I walked away with the feeling that Clancy just didn't care about the quality of his work anymore. I was encouraged that this was a book with Ryan Sr. in a prominent role, but discouraged by it being co-authored.Overall, I like this novel. The story telling, while not historical Clancy quality, is good. It draws you in, keeps you turning the page, and gets your blood pumping at times. Those who know Clancy's style of writing and his attention to detail will certainly appreciate many parts of this story. I found myself with a smirk several times thinking "typical Clancy" or "that's ingenious". The last Clancy novel I read where I had similarly good thoughts was "The Bear and The Dragon". As far as Ryan/Clark co-authored novels go, this is better than the others but far from being great. It was a very low bar that the Clancy/Greaney duo had to rise above.While it is "good", I have an expectation for anything with Clancy's name to be "great". So many of Clancy's earlier works fall into this "great" category for me: Red Storm Rising, Hunt for Red October, Without Remorse, Executive Orders, Rainbow Six. This doesn't fit into the same category. There are gaps in this book with unanswered questions, which has been typical for the last several novels. The big ones? Chavez has previously-unknown expert skills, and it isn't mentioned how he acquired them. Ryan's resignation from his first Presidency still isn't clearly explained, which is something I wish was in this book since it is about Ryan's run for the White House, and, honestly, was something I was looking forward to reading about. The old Clancy doesn't leave things unexplained like this, and he missed a prime opportunity to address this.I have read enough Clancy to know which parts are written by Greaney in this novel, and they don't all flow well with the rest of the book. The difference in writing style, at times, threw me off and interrupted the story somewhat. The opening action sequence of the book is such an element. The difference in style is very apparent as the next element of the story is about Ryan Sr., and is clearly written by Clancy himself. I do not have an issue with Clancy co-authoring his books, I have an issue with the quality of those books. There is no reason a co-authored novel has to be of lower quality. It is undoubtedly hard work to make the work of two authors flow well together in a single cohesive story, and where Clancy fails is in the editing and proof-reading. The only explanation is that either Tom is losing skill, or he lacks the same level of intense passion he had before.As for my rating, it goes a little beyond just the star value I assigned to it. I like this book, I feel it's better than just "ok". As far as entertainment value, I feel it deserves the "I like it" four-star rating. If I were to rate it on five star scale against other Ryan/Clark novels, it would be a 3. While this isn't the Clancy redemption I hoped for, I can now see an author at least trying to get back to his roots. I hope the next one is a solo novel that ties up some of the loose ends from the last few.Final thoughts: I can't think of a reason to NOT recommend this book. Through it's flaws is a good story that is a page turner, and has some great moments with familiar characters. It leaves me glad I read it, and I'll probably read it again.
I found this book to be similar to many other reviewers and at this point it probably just needs to be the expected outcome. In its own right its a decent book that can at times pull you in and make reading worthwhile. However, it is not what I would consider groundbreaking or anywhere near the level of intricate interwoven plot lines and details available in older Clancy novels.All too often there are specific contradicting details just a page or two apart which seems silly for a professional well developed novel. It has no impact on the overall story but when a BMW turns into a Mercedes or an UMP45 is suddenly a .40 caliber over the course of a paragraph or two it nags at my brain.As in several of the other co-authored books, greater levels of leeway seem to be taken in each installment with the history and back stories of recurring characters.Overall good enough read to be worth the couple of weeks I was picking it up to get in a few chapters here and there. They would probably avoid much of the outcry on these if they would stop trying to pass them of as TOM CLANCY novels. Just call it the Jack Ryan series or something to keep the history but stop being compared to the defining works.
Locked On by Tom Clancy and Mark Greaney is the sequel to the novel Dead or Alive (reviewed here). It is the third novel in the Campus series, which deals with the wildly implausible off-the-books assassination squad assembled by Jack Ryan when he's President that employs his son. The Campus doesn't answer to its liberal President, Ed Kealty (boo!), but their own sense of justice (yay!), while doing all manner of illegal things which would technically qualify them as terrorists under international law. But which doesn't matter because this is not a series with a trace of either awareness or moral ambiguity. And it's awesome for it. No, seriously, I highly recommend the Campus books for fans of Tom Clancy and newcomers to his writing alike despite how incredibly bad it is in many places. No, seriously, there's some genuinely camp stuff in this book. We have ultra-liberal lawyers wanting to get the stand-in for Osama Bin Ladin transferred to a minimum security prison and a member of an illegal death squad not pursued by public charges because the President might lose Mexican votes. Locked On takes place in a ridiculously over-the-top universe which is closer and closer to a Republican James Bond's every day but which insists its more or less realistic. Speaking as the flaming liberal anarchist that I am, Locked On was enjoyable from start to finish even if it was propagandist at times. I've heard far worse from my father, though, and the book is framed so much in black and white terms it's hard to take any of the areas I disagree with seriously. Readers who are more easily offended by such things should bear this in mind that Tom Clancy, or his co-author, is very prone to wearing his politics on his sleeve. The premise of the novel is the Emir is still imprisoned by the United States government but is working through sympathetic liberal lawyers in order to pass information onto his allies about the Campus. This information leads directly to a warrant being issued for multiple world-saver John Clark as well as threatens to reveal his clandestine activities. Meanwhile, a terrorist leader plans to begin a military coupl in Afghanistan by "disappearing" one of the country's nukes to be used against a terrorist organization's target-of-choice. Jack Ryan Senior, through all of this, is trying to get elected President as he sees Ed Kealty as a fool unable to navigate these complicated political waters. And, being a Jack Ryan book, he's right. This is a fun-fun example of spy fiction if you have a high tolerance for Clancy's right-wing preaching. There's several great action sequences, lots of spy melodrama, and even an interesting romance subplot. I really like the new character of Melanie Kraft, a CIA analyst who is doing her best to deal with the politically charged atmosphere of the current administration, and hope to see her more in future books. There's plenty of characters, both old and new, getting to do outrageous bits of fun. It's a book which I can't take seriously as political fiction or a hard spy fiction but I enjoyed it nevertheless. Tom Clancy does his usual techno-thriller accuracy but, as with Dead or Alive, the Campus defies all manner of assumptions about the realities of both law as well as technology. Someone in the FBI, CIA, or NSA would pick up on their existence, especially since they're data-mining all three for their crusade against terrorists. It's an escapist fantasy, though, so I'm more willing to let it slide this time. Likewise, I enjoy the fact John Clark is still running around various countries doing wetwork despite the fact he's sixty-five years old. The "good" characters are all likable and fun while the "bad" guys are all despicable and hateable--which is really what you want from this sort of book. In conclusion, Locked On is far from Clancy's best work but it's still entertaining as hell. You won't find any great insights into how spywork is done in the real world, you should read the earlier Tom Clancy novels for that sort of insight (or do your own research), but if you're looking for an entertaining literary action movie then this is the place to look. I look forward to picking up more entries in the series to see where Jack Ryan Junior's story goes and I'm saddened by the fact Tom Clancy didn't get to finish it before his death.8/10

Well researched book on actor George Brent - a frequent co-star of Bette Davis - and one that the actresses liked as he would not overwhelm their roles as a Clark Gable would. Brent had a most interesting life but was somewhat reclusive. The author did a lot of work in tracking down Brent's Irish roots and family history. He also interviewed those who worked with Brent as well as Brent's daughter and a nephew. The book was full of great photographs and provided an extensive listing of all of Brent's work including film, television, and radio. I would highly recommend this to classic film fans. My only reason for 4 stars is I felt the author did not complete the book in that we really know nothing of what Brent's children and grandchildren are doing and I would have liked to have known that.
Womanizer, much married/divorced, IRA Freedom Fighter, a man with a bounty on his head, an actor, orphaned early in life. These tags have all been assigned to film actor George Brent who's sketchy biography seems like a press agent's dream or desperate attempt to provide a biography for someone who was notoriously private. When it came to revealing much about himself, Brent really didn't say much. Curiously, even four of his wives who were actresses, didn't say much. Not surprisingly with the exception of a union to a non-professional which lasted twenty-six years and ended in death, his other marriages were of short duration from two weeks to three years. Clearly author Scott O'Brien had his work cut out for him.Brent was active in film from 1931 to 1952. Prior to that, he was active in theater. After 1952, he worked predominantly in television with a few film appearances, but was also involved in horse breeding while providing his young family with a healthy lifestyle away from Hollywood.This is an impressive biography which works on a lot of levels. George Brent's real life story is interesting in its own right and the information extracted from a variety of reputable sources makes for an interesting tale. It covers Brent's rep as a ladies man, clears up details of a vague and confusing childhood, traces his early immigration to the U.S., a fractured family background, and views his film career in detail.One of the more interesting aspects of this book is how many of his films I have seen and the number of prominent leading ladies he acted with. Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyk, Claudette Colbert, Ginger Rogers......all sort of dazzling from a viewers perspective.The author has detailed Brent's filmography and provided a lot of anecdotal information while incorporating it chronologically in an clear and easy to read narrative.If you are a fan of Brent or interested in pre-code film, this is a book you should read.
I ordered this book on 9/12 and received it a few days later. I was unable to put it down until it I finished it. This is one of the best-written and well-researched books that I have ever read. George Brent is one of my favorite actors who had a complex, reclusive personality, so it was very interesting to understand more about that. I especially enjoyed the part of the book about his last wife and the mother of his children, Janet Michael, who truly was his soul mate. I am definitely going to purchase more of Scott O'Brien's biographies. What a wonderful author. It is also refreshing that he did not include rumors, just facts, and really appreciated seeing the photos. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in classic movie stars and movies, and of course George Brent! I am so glad I purchased this book!
Scott O'Brien does another fine job with his extensive and heartfelt research on Mr. Brent. George Brent is often overlooked but those of us who appreciate his work are thrilled to hear about his life and loves. Scott O'Brien fills in the gaps and tells us the story of a handsome actor who was never recognized enough. From his films to his wives, we are enchanted with this bio. Bravo.
