The first segment of this book is a retelling of his "great life to near death to great life to financial ruin to great life" story (which was published before his "great life to rare cancer to great life" chapter.) I'll give him this: he is superbly adaptive to his circumstances, and God bless him for that. But the core notion that life SHOULD be lived, MUST be lived, at 100% in order to have an exceptional, happy, fulfilled life is utter bunk.I like Tony Robbins' approach--live life with passion. Absolutely. But to think that most humans are living in mediocrity completely invalidates (not to mention judges) how others find happiness. I know people who live to fish, that being out on the water every weekend is what they live for. Some of them even make their living fishing. Are they living their lives to their full potential? Who knows? Are they happy? They say they are, so who are we to say that's a life of mediocrity?I know a guy who lives like Hal Elrod describes--full on, all the time, super successful, incredibly rich. The guy called me the other day drunk, sobbing, completely unhinged because he is so desperately unhappy, being unable to process his father's dying and the neglect he experienced as a child. Millionaire. Living full blast. Suicidal. What seems to be missing from Mr Elrod's treatise is a broader view of what a truly successful life includes. I am capable of a ton more than what I'm doing right now. But I've lived in the spotlight, I've made my mark in my area of military psychiatry through public speaking and published articles. But I am happier now than I ever was back then. I work quietly without fanfare, explore back roads, hike when the weather is good, visit family and friends as time allows, read new books on my occasional day off, and attend as much good theater as possible. For me, getting up early is not so I can do all the things that will maximize my potential. It's to leisurely make a cup of coffee, sit and enjoy it while I watch the sky lighten, make the bed (maybe), and a couple of times a week, head over to my community YMCA and enjoy the fellowship of an accepting, nonjudgemental community while I do whatever my body thinks would feel good. That is joy.Could I do more? Yep. But I have no need to. I'm intellectually stimulated every day at my job, spiritually enriched within my religious community, in the peak of health at 60 years old, despite these unpleasant 20# I have gained these past 5 years, and think I have a pretty fabulous life, especially in comparison to 80% of the rest of the planet.Berating myself for not doing as much as I am physically, intellectually, and emotionally capable (which Mr Elrod's unwavering message would lead some to do, I think) is the opposite of living a grateful, fulfilling life. So I can't endorse this particular message, although if it's helping others find a path to enrichment, that's great. But this path is definitely not the only, or even the best, path for many of us.BTW, I have no trouble whatsoever stating my life's purpose: to ease the suffering of whoever is near me at any given moment. Not remove their suffering. Not ease the suffering of every living soul on the planet. Just make each individual feel a little less pain, a little more hope, a little more confident, a little less scared, a little more love. Simple. And achievable. Don't need a book to figure that out.
Excellent Book!!! I almost didn't get the book because I read the 1 star reviews and they said it was a simplistic redo of the same messages many others had done. Well, I am so happy I went ahead and bought it in spite of the negative reviews. As you can see I'm a 5 star for the book. I heard Hal Elrod on a webinar and was excited to read the book based upon his presentation, there were a lot of 5 star reviews and I decided to get it. After reading the book, I do not understand the negativity of the 1 star reviewers. Condensing important behaviors into actionable action steps is a good thing in my evaluation. Keeping it simple even better. I found it to be a very smooth transition into the new routine. Why the high rating from me? I am now exercising 6 days per week and enjoying it. To exercise has been on my goals list for five years and I just couldn't get back to it until I read Miracle Morning. I am also reading every morning and I learned a new technique for me that I include too. Some of the other things I was already doing, but the read provided reinforcement and encouragement to keep doing them.If you are into self improvement, life-long learning and actionable implementation steps, then get this book.
I have just finished my first week of doing TMM for five days in a row. I can't believe that I not only did it, but I'm expanding my goals to do it on weekends too now!! 🌅🌅🌅I adore this book and the ideas it has gotten me to incorporate in my life. A few weeks ago I was exhausted in tears thinking I didn't have "me time". What time alone I had at the end of the day I just wasted watching tv.Now, I'm centered and rich with me time thanks to TMM. My mornings are completely changed now for my kids too; it's much calmer!! And nothing they do has changed; it's just me that has changed. I thought they caused the chaos, but maybe it was more fixable than I thought??!!I would have NEVER thought I was a morning person, but I guess maybe I am!!??? Who knew!!??
I'm on month five of my miracle morning journey. Thank you Hal Elrod! He takes "obvious" ideas and relates them in a way that inspires the reader to make a change. Want to lose weight? Learn more? Connect to your higher power? Improve your motivation? Yup. We all do, but how?Get up earlier! What? Yes. Just get up earlier.By setting a personal context for us and relating it universally, Elrod pushes the right buttons to get you to drag your butt out of bed 30 to 60 minutes earlier every day and begin your new life. I strongly suggest it.Update: A year later I am still doing the miracle morning. It has changed in pattern and duration through the year, but its significance in my life has stayed positive and meaningful.
This book changed my life in one sitting. Hal Elrod's personal life story was so inspiring, all I could think about was how blessed I was without realizing it, and what an amazing person this author was for what he had to endure in his life. I had NO reason to complain any longer! Not only did his story inspire me to become a better person all around, his Miracle Morning helped me create a solid plan for my every day to form habits that successful people have, which put me in the mindset for success every day. There were so many things I loved about this book, but one of my favorite quotes was:"Always remember that where you are is a result of who you WERE, but where you go depends entirely on who you choose to be, from this moment on."This quote alone inspired me to let go of my past and not let it define me any longer. I now CHOOSE who I want to be, moving forward in my life. I recommend this book to anyone who seeks guidance and discipline to get their life back on track and create a solid plan for their future. You can't help but be motivated by this author's story!

The book contains information and reviews of the Rolls Royce and Bentley automobile from 1990-2002. Gives the equipment and mechanical changes from year to year. A lot of road test and general information. Not knowing much about Rolls Royce I found the book entertaining.
"Bentley & Rolls Royce 1990-2002" is a Brooklands Books Portfolio publication that features cars from the world's two most iconic and timeless names in automobile manufacturing. Like the other titles in the Brooklands Books line, "Bentley & Rolls Royce 1990-2002" follows the traditional format the publisher has long established of supplying reprinted material from the world's most popular automotive journals and magazines. Covers are of card stock with color images appearing both front and rear. The one very welcome sight in this tome is the addition of 60 full color pages! The remaining articles are printed in black and white, however it is obvious close attention was paid to insure that the transition of these pieces to black and white was performed with the highest of quality, as the images retain full sharpness and clarity. At over 300 pages in length, one gets a true feel of not only the heft of the book at hand, but the correlation to that of the cars being featured within. Bentley is more prominent in the pages of this book than that of its sister company Rolls Royce. Bentley models featured stretch from the Turbo R to an October 2002 article featuring the first impressions of the then all new Bentley Continental GT. Rolls Royce, though with fewer pages allotted, is still covered in reasonable depth, including articles on the Silver Spirit II, Flying Spur, Corniche, and Silver Seraph. That being said, roughly 19 articles are focused on Rolls with the remaining being dedicated to Bentley models. The selection of articles is brilliant and range from model introductions, to road tests, and even a buyer's guide for the Bentley Turbo R from the pages of EVO. Some of the best articles are the comparison pieces featured throughout the book and appearing from a wide array of top shelf automobile magazines from around the globe which offer a great taste of how these cars stacked up against their contemporary rivals when they were new.As with practically all Brooklands Books, "Bentley and Rolls Royce 1990-2002" offers a wealth of information to the enthusiast who other wise may not have access to cars like Bentley and Rolls Royce on a frequent basis in everyday life. While this title is priced a bit higher than some of the other offerings from Brooklands Books, it goes a bit farther by featuring many articles in color and is practically double in size to that of the other books from this publisher. Without doubt, this is one of the best resources on Bentley cars of this time period, as well as a more than fair resource on the models produced by Rolls Royce throughout the 1990s. "Bentley and Rolls Royce 1990-2002" is a fine selection for anyone looking to learn more about these most iconic, and truly very English, automobiles.

Tisch Professor of History, Harvard University"A fascinating and thought-provoking book … a brilliant read for individuals, but should be mandatory reading for our politicians." - Shirley Cramer CBE, Chief Executive Officer, Royal Society for Public Health"This timely, important, easy-to-read and intriguing book will make you pause and think, as well as better plan your life … Gratton and Scott’s book is a wake-up call for individuals, organizations, governments and societies." - Boris Groysberg, Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School"The authors understand implicitly that not only is the world as we know it changing beyond all recognition, but the way we lead our lives too. This book could not be more timely or necessary." - Julia Hobsbawm, Founder and CEO, Editorial Intelligence Ltd, and Honorary Visiting professor in Networking, Cass Business School"This playfully original book … makes a compelling case that as our lives become longer and healthier, the future might just be very, very different from what we have known until now." - Daron Acemoglu, Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology"[This] wonderful new book prepares us for the possibilities of this brave new world of longevity, and teaches us what it will take to thrive in it." - Professor Herminia Ibarra, INSEAD"Too many books bemoan the economic problems facing ageing societies. I made it just over 20% through this book. The premise is interesting -- the lead-in statistics quite gripping -- a middle-age person today has even odds of living to 95 -- we truly do not think in this mindset. But what the authors *do* with it will not surprise anyone who is smart. They spent many pages going down the basics of compounding interest and retirement. If you're the type who needs to have this worked out for you, you may enjoy this book. Compounding interest is fundamental to how I see the world, and this section was a huge bore. The authors then proceeded to talk about planning a life for a century. What they said would surprise no one who reads the news. They talk about the disappearance of factory labor, population inversion and pensions, the growth of service industry, etc. The basic groupthink of today. They project out into the next 10 or so years using, again, the groupthink of the day. Nothing was really surprising or interesting here. So I stopped reading it.I always read reviews with an eye of how a smart/educated person may like a book, I was genuinely mislead by the reviews I read thinking that I would get something new/interesting from this book. But I didn't. I hope my review will help some folks. I do think many people will enjoy this book, but not people like me.
This is an exciting book packed with new ideas. Much of it is speculative, but the authors are upfront about the various assumptions they make.It is not a scholarly work, nor is it properly "self-help," but it has given me plenty to consider, and to discuss with my cohort and the younger members of my family. Not every chapter will be of interest to every reader, and if you've sat on a pension board or are an actuary several of the explanatory portions can be skipped, but for most readers most of it will be thought-provoking indeed. And relevant to many aspects of their lives.
I am 88 years oldand for many years long ago in my younger days I half jokingly said I wanted to live to be 120 years old if I could remain sound of mind. Now according to your article perhaps witha little bit of luck Ijust may be able to achieve my goa!. I am a reader with about 4 or 5 kindles which I keep charged up at all times. I rarely watch TV, getting my news about politics. national and international news on my kindle. There are lots of things I will willingly give up but not one on of my kindles. I read the New York Times , the Washington Post and a couples others daily. only one complaint please a few fewer stories of DT. Other than that, keep up the good work. Joan Draper.
This is a weird book. It felt like one of those classes in college you get very excited but in reality turns out to be boring, yet occasionally their is a spark of wisdom to get you out of the slumber and make you push reader further. One of the majors issues with the book is that the authors try to present an economic model full of assumptions. The model works well for the book but given the macro nature of the topic, readers might feel put off. Also, as other have pointed out here, the authors are a bit too optimistic on the quality of life people over 70 enjoy/will enjoy.Nevertheless, the book has some valuable advice for young and old.Really enjoyed the Assets model analysis and the end of the education-work-retirement model pieces.
This is a good books that looks at the implications of longevity and what that will mean foe retirement and skills and life. This is a business book and so it touches on the career and education aspects if life, but also contains a portion on the importance of relationships. The authors use the concept of capital investments and drawdown as a metaphor to discuss the need to spend time in relationships and skills to have a balanced life.
This book is a "must read" for almost everyone - if you are a parent, a grandparent, or anyone under 40, you really need to read this book! The 100 Year Life taps into the major demographic shift that is going on as we are living longer, healthier lives, and how this results in the need to rethink the entire life course - the nature of work, education, and how we think about time and how we use it. The book gives a very practical take on what today's young people, who are likely to live into their 90s and 100s, need to think about as they navigate this longer life course and how it will shift how people think about work, retirement, and relationships.
Comprehensive overview of what people should expect and plan for as life expectancy increases to 100 years. Perhaps a bit long winded and obvious in places, but still an interesting read.
Tremendously important. A must read book if you are a boomer, x or y or z...great approach. Loved every single electronic page.

Easy to read book. Nice layout. With practical tips on how to organize a workshop using LSP. Recommended the book to several of my colleagues who are workshop facilitators. Had great success using the techniques!
Good teaching tool. Not suitable for my classroom situation.
Very useful, a very pragmatic and step by step approach
I just started reading this book and it is incredible. I've read the LSP Open Source document, watched several videos by Marko Rillo, and conducted my first Build Level 2 workshop in China. Sean and Marko pull it all together and simplify the process, as well as providing great facilitation notes for Build Level 1 activities. This book has definitely helped me improve the way I'll be conducting future workshops. The only thing reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the editing and typesetting seems to have been a little sloppy, some words are joined together, there are a few sentences that look to have been accidentally chopped off mid-sentence. Other than, the content is awesome and I'm looking forward to attending the LSP Facilitator course in March with Robert Rasmussen.
By S-A. Kristoffersen. January 28, 2017"From 2015 onwards, I have been learning and practicing LEGO® Serious Play®. I completed a LSP facilitators course in June 2016 and since then have been working with my facilitator skills. I have been researching various information on this subject. I bought this as a e-book in hopes i would have found a practical guide for facilitators, and was I not disappointed. The book is easy to read with really good examples. The authors explain subjects in a straight forward fashion. It is a practical guidebook that any LSP facilitator will value. And to my big surprise - i got some extra resources online - Sort of a bonus i did not expect, FANTASTIC!
Copy catsMr. Blair and Mr. Rillo - just HOW selfpromoting and awful people can one be?Obviously there is no limit to what the 2 of you "will take credit for".Sad and pitiful. Very pitiful. You are a disgrace to the REAL and GENUINE LEGO SERIOUS PLAY community. To make SERIOUS hardworking people contribute to this book (without letting themknow what is going on) is very NON SERIOUS.
I am a certified facilitator of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® materials and methodology, and have used the this approach for over 3 years. Until now I have relied on my training materials, one book and other open source materials as references to keep me inspired. It's fantastic to have such a complete and thorough resource guide in full color with plenty of examples, photos and clear instructions. I ordered the digital version of Serious Work back in November and liked it so much I decided to purchase a print copy, too. I have to say, it’s beautiful and fantastic! It’s so satisfying to have the print version to hold in my hands. This is an amazing piece of (serious) work. I highly recommend this book to anyone curious about the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® materials and methodology and those who are certified facilitators looking for a valuable resource guide.
Excellent for what it is, working through level 1 LSP building. I was hoping for more in Level 2 & 3 as well.

If you are reading reviews of this book to determine whether it's worth your time, my answer is yes: I think most readers with an interest in the dharma, except perhaps those unshakably committed to traditional Buddhist dogmas on karma and reincarnation, will find much value here. This is an intelligent, serious, and engaging work whose ideas the author likely pondered and refined over a period of years, a learned but vibrant formulation of a secular dharma that hones in on tasks we can undertake to live compassionately and authentically. At the same time, this secular dharma dispenses with metaphysical and ontological claims that have scant bearing on liberating ourselves from the prison of reactivity. Someone who is drowning has little use for a lesson on the chemistry of water. What is needed is a teaching on how to breathe in and out of the water, and how to move and thrive in a dynamic seascape of ever-shifting currents, not a discourse on covalent and hydrogen bonds or molecular orbital theory. The book is organized into eleven chapters that alternate in shiplap fashion, an expository chapter on the dharma followed by a chapter on an individual associated with the Buddha. The latter are helpful in providing a historical context of the Buddha's life and times. In all, five characters are profiled: Mahanama, a cousin of Buddha and a governor of Sakiya; Pasenadi, king of Kosala; Sunakkhatta, a Judas Iscariot figure; Jivaka, a physician; and Ananda, the Buddha's attendant.Batchelor's approach to the surviving Buddhist corpus borrows from Biblical textual criticism, attempting to suss out from the massive Pali canon parts that may be attributed to early Buddhist tradition and even the historical Buddha himself, hereafter referred to as Gotama. Batchelor declares in the first chapter: "My starting point in dealing with dogmatic statements is to bracket off anything attributed to Gotama that could just as well have been said by another wanderer, Jain monk, or brahmin priest of the same period." That is, utterances inconsistent with Indic beliefs prevalent during that period are more likely to be authentic, to not have been emended by a later hand. Batchelor continues, "The bracketing off of such beliefs does not, in my opinion, result in a fragmentary and emasculated dharma. Instead, the result is what appears to be an entirely adequate ethical, contemplative, and philosophical framework for leading a flourishing life in this (italics) world."Gotama, as described by Batchelor, stresses the undertaking of existential tasks rather than cerebral, speculative, and abstract elaborations on metaphysics or even universal ethics. More on the latter shortly. Leaning on Pali philologist K.R. Norman's observations on the semantic oddity involving the use of "ariya-saccam" or "noble truth" in Gotama's first alleged discourse, Batchelor recasts the four noble truths as the four tasks instead. In other words, he asks us to lift our gaze from the metaphysics of the Truths of the existence, origin, and cessation of suffering, and instead reframe them as four tasks we can undertake to negotiate both an unpredictable world that is often traumatizing as well as our reactivity to it. As an experienced craftsman deploys an array of skills in his trade, so does a wise person skillfully practice the four tasks to flourish in this world. In Batchelor's reformulation of the four noble truths, they become the following tasks: 1) Embrace [the totality of] life; 2) Let go of what[ever reactivity that] arises; 3) See its ceasing; 4) Act!The foundation for performing the four tasks is the two-fold ground of causality and nirvana. Causality: this is so because that is so. Knowing that this leads to that enables us to follow the path toward liberation. Likewise, when you see that letting go of reactivity opens a space for a peace that is unmolested by burning impulses, when you have tasted this nirvana in which flames of impulse are extinguished, if only temporarily, it is possible to enter the stream and begin swimming toward liberation. To enter this stream, one must have courage to see past the shaky grounds on which we often rest our identity, whether they are nationality, ethnicity, gender, career, educational background, or favorite sports team. The grounds of causality and nirvana are more elusive yet offer a much surer footing for a sane and fulfilling life. What kind of a person was the historical Gotama who emerges from the suttas and vinayas? Stripped of the supernatural and dogmatic elements that Batchelor deems later accretions influenced by Indic traditions, the Gotama we see is foremost a pragmatist. Attentive to the specifics of a situation, he abandons claims to ultimate truths or universal ethics. He says, “Of that which the wise in the world agree upon as not existing, I too say that it does not exist. And of that which the wise in the world agree upon as existing, I too say that it exists." It seems that Gotama did not toss and turn at night agonizing over metaphysical questions! Gotama's ethics, as well, are guided by core values but eschew absolutism. For the monastic community, Gotama allowed for the revocation of minor rules after his passing, and left it up to the mendicants themselves to fashion out what that means. Of philosophy, ethics, and jurisprudence that seek to hammer out universally applicable principles, Gotama would probably say that they lazily elide over the all-important contextual details that guide us toward the most wise and loving course of action for a given situation. Nor is Gotama a detached ascetic. He regularly interacts with the outside world, and springs to action where there is a need. In this book we see him negotiating delicate political terrains. We also see him as a healer. Upon discovering a dysentery-stricken mendicant who lay in his own excrement, neglected by his fellow mendicants, Gotama cleans off the fecal waste and bathes him, after which he scolds the sick man's cohorts: "If you do not tend to each other, then who is there who will tend to you? Whoever would tend to me, he should tend to the sick." Gotama, as we glimpse him in these anecdotes, is compassionate, practical, and engaged. In the closing chapter, A Culture of Awakening, Batchelor champions a dharma that speaks urgently to the needs of our times. The project Gotama envisioned was like rebuilding upon the ruins of a newly discovered ancient city. Here, informed by the freedom of nirvana, individuals come together to build a culture in which humans can truly flourish. Realizing this core vision does not, Batchelor argues, require an unquestioning belief in doctrines such as karma and reincarnation. He asks, in a secular western civilization without long traditions in which reincarnation was taken as a given, in which scientific narratives have overtaken religious ones, does belief in reincarnation help us accomplish the four tasks? Batchelor concludes the book with his Ten Theses of Secular Dharma, most of whose credos have been reflected in this review, but which also espouses sanghas, or spiritual communities, without hierarchies. While I cannot judge the quality of Batchelor's Pali scholarship, the book seemed to be densely woven with learned and carefully nuanced arguments. I found the author an able and sensitive reader, and many times in the book I was surprised by how much information he was able to extract from seemingly insignificant Pali fragments. Batchelor's conjectures and conclusions regarding the texts are necessarily speculative, but I believe they are informed and intelligent. His textual approach to arrive at the historical Gotama is a welcome one, and in my opinion, badly needed in Buddhist studies. I also believe that his vision of a secular dharma is sensible and healthy. Buddhism has survived across centuries and continents because it was able to adapt to the needs of its practitioners, though its core teachings remained intact. Batchelor is wise to ask what kind of dharma follows after Buddhism in a western culture in which the idea of mindfulness has spread like wildfire, but one that is unlikely to embrace the idea of reincarnation in literal rather than metaphorical terms. Additionally, I found the portraits of Gotama and assorted characters in this book vivid and compelling. Here we see these historical people fleshed out, with their ideologies, allegiances, temperaments, and limitations. We gasp in horror as Gotama is helpless to stop the genocidal onslaught of his kinsmen by a vengeful king. We witness a monk of senior position, disappointed in Gotama's lack of supernatural abilities, turn traitorous and furiously denounce his former teacher. In the chapter on Ananda, we sympathize with Gotama's attendant as he is humiliated and marginalized in the power struggle that ensues Gotama's death.I do disagree with Batchelor on a few counts, most notably on the meaning of Gotama's awakening. I'll discuss only the latter here. Was Gotama's awakening the complete and eternal eradication of the impulses of greed, hatred, and delusion? Clearly not, as the Pali canon describes his multiple encounters with Mara, the personified metaphor of these forces, even after his enlightenment. Batchelor appears resigned to the impossibility of a lasting nirvana: "The problem with the three fires of greed, hatred, and confusion does not lie in their being hot but in the havoc they cause when they get out of control. ... The parable of the snake might suggest that these fires are not to be extinguished but regulated. Since emotions appear to be rooted deep in our limbic system as the legacy of biological evolution, regulation might be all that is possible and feasible." For Batchelor, then, nirvanic freedom is not something to work toward, but available in each moment we choose to disentangle ourselves from reactivity. If progress is made, it is by habituation. My own experiences have led me to a different take. While I agree with Batchelor that we are inescapably subject to features of our mammalian physiology, I do not believe that nirvana is something merely glimpsed through practice, a momentary peace that flits like a butterfly in and out of our lives. Traumas we've experienced dissociate us physically from our bodies and temporally, and consequently 1) we lack full awareness of the felt sense of living in our bodies, and 2) our thoughts constantly stray from the present, either wandering toward fantasies or fears regarding the future, or dwelling upon glories, regrets, or injuries of the past. Whatever evolutionary instincts we are born with for the sake of self-preservation, trauma adds to the fuel of Mara's fire. In my opinion, Gotama's instruction on mindfulness of the breath is a prescription for the undoing, the healing, of the forces of trauma, to bring us back into our bodies in this moment. I believe that creating and sustaining this internal milieu opened up the space for the healing of the traumas of Gotama's past until there was no more to be undone. I say this based on my ongoing experience with the healing of traumas. A practice of meditation on and off the cushion has been the foundation allowing me to slowly process the traumas of my past, and little by little, I find that I am becoming less reactive. My days tend to be more present, I feel more connected to my body, and compassion flows more naturally. Even in emotionally volatile moments, it is becoming easier to slip back into the sublimity of the present moment. In short the fires of greed, anger, and confusion now burn less avidly in my interior landscape than they did a year ago, and much less so than they did, say, three years ago. Given my personal trajectory, I can only extrapolate that there must be an eventual end to the flames of trauma, at which point the limbic system may still stir and rattle, but with considerably attenuated intensity. This is my understanding of, and partial experience with, nirvana. Finally, for those who might be interested, recordings of many of Batchelor's talks are freely available on the dharma seed website. I have listened to a few over the past several days, and they address many of the themes from this book. I wish you well on your path.
I have enjoyed Stephen Batchelor’s writing and point of view regarding a more secular teaching of the Buddhist path, and this book is no exception. He very clearly and logically outlines a view of the life and teachings of the Buddha (who he simply refers to as Gotama (a nice touch) throughout) that do not fit the orthodoxy that we are fed by so many of his contemporary (and most all past) writers. This book challenges that Buddhist orthodoxy at every turn, while it provides scriptural references (liberally, yet thoughtfully interpreted) to support the views presented by the author.Mr. Batchelor attempts to bring us back to a teaching of the dharma that is grounded in experience, avoiding the trappings of the mysticism that is so pervasive in Buddhism today. And while exasperating at times (especially for this ordained Chan Buddhist), it is refreshing to read because it provides an opportunity for the reader to reorient his practice towards a more meaningful, holistic, and personal dharma with the desired outcome being a more loving and complete relationship with the world of everyday life, and the beings inhabiting it. Too often we spend our practice contemplating if the world “out there†is real, instead of treating others with love and respect. One failing, for me personally, was Mr. Bachelor’s equivocation when it came to the topic of rebirth and karma. He simply cannot seem to put these behind him as honestly and thoroughly as he does similar mysticism (no self, two truths doctrine, psychic powers, etc.) inherent in the teachings today. To suggest that these two dogmatic positions had some value to those who believed them fails to admit that they also lead to far greater harm when used as weapons against individuals in the form of “your past transgressions are why you suffer now.†It’s nonsense.Lastly, and the primary reason for giving 4 instead of 5 stars, the book starts to ramble towards the end, as if Mr. Batchelor seems to forgot his main purpose for writing it – providing an alternative, yet compelling secular narrative for the life and teachings of the Buddha. He quickly refocuses, but for a good part of the time, I am left wondering if the material is just filler to make the book longer. Will this book (as with his others) inspire condemnation by a more fundamentalist set of Buddhists who have grown (too) attached to the teachings they admire? Most likely (certainly?). But Stephen Batchelor is no stranger to such condemnation, nor does he allow it to distort his focus or convictions – for which I applaud him.If you are open-minded to a dharma that isn’t mired in mysticism, orthodoxy, and ancient ritualized practices, read this book.
I am so blown away by the author's explanation of many familiar passages from the Pali Canon. I have been studying and practicing Buddhism for nearly 40 years, first as a religion, then not as a religion but as a mental discipline, then again as a religion...... anyway, I think you can see my point -- confusion comes from having so many competing views of what the Buddha actually taught. I am not a Pali scholar and so have had to rely on the various translations and interpretations out there but I am trained in a profession that is grounded in logic (the law) and that is what I find so appealing in this book. It has already answered some of my long term questions, e.g. what is the unborn? how is this different from the Hindu atman? how does this fit with the reference to anatman in other Buddhist teachings? I highly recommend.
