For a book that is billed as a 'visual companion' to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,' this book comes up short on substance. I have collected all of Jude Fisher's companion books to the Lord of The Rings/The Hobbit movies. This one is visually beautiful and put together well. It has a nice, shiny, colorful hard cover and a dust cover to match. Regarding content, the first 2/3 to 3/45 of the book are just there to tell the reader the story of The Hobbit 'up to now,' and include photos from the first two movies. The latter part of the book is very ambiguous, regarding The Battle of The Five Armies. Ms. Fisher talks about the trolls, ogres, bats, and more that appear in the great battle, but there are no photos of these, odd for a 'visual companion' to the movie. She alludes to Thranduil's lack of love for the dwarves, unlike Tauriel's, but goes no further. She alludes to Kili and Fili's propensity for being 'young and reckless,' and says '...that propensity places them in greater danger...' but doesn't say what that danger is. The photos that are included in this area of the book are indeed from the movie the book is said to be about, but they are all close-ups of the various characters. Its nice to be able to see what they are wearing, but there is very little background to view. A few Elven bows, some injured folks from Lake Town, some old Dwarvish armour and weapons in the foreground or background.I pre-ordered this book, and rec'd and read it before the US release of the movie. Perhaps Ms. Fisher was not allowed to divulge too much info before the movie premier?It is just fine if you are looking for a good-looking book for your shelf or coffee table, or to complete your collection. But for information about the movie, The Battle of the Five Armies, there is very little to discover.
Granted, this book more than anything, is just a promo for the upcoming film. Yet I was pleasantly surprised with the overall presentation which is very nice and (pun intended) very unexpected. There is a great four page fold out map of Middle Earth in the middle of the book, there are numerous two full page pictures that are immense in detail and very high quality with no upscaling. Regardless of the fact that this is a $14 promo book, there are awesome pictures, great page layout and such a cool forward by Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins). I wasn't expecting much from this book, I got it because I cannot contain my excitement for the movie and am getting any and everything Hobbit related while it's cheap and available. This book covers broad subjects in sections like Hobbiton, the Shire, Bilbo, the Ring, Gandalf, each Dwarve, the White Council, Rivendell and so forth. All the pictures look like finished post production photos from the actual film transfer. Note: there are no pictures of Smaug or the Necromancer or spiders or Lake-Town, Bard or Beorn, but there are some great pictures of Orcs and Goblins and the Goblin King. This book, as the title states, is only covering the first film "An Unexpected Journey". I am very pleased with this book. It's a little on the small side, but The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Chronicles: Art & Design by Weta Digital should have far more content and behind the scenes info when it's released on December 14th. If you love anything Hobbit related or like collecting any and all things Middle Earth, this book is well worth the price for the great pictures and fold out map.
The information inside does not cover all characters and the important scenes.Is it a commercial objective to drive me to buy the thick book in order to have more details? It is only good for chidren , but not for the fans. Something that makes me not understand is how come a book of the battle of five armies has gotten too much information about the disolation of smuag ? This approach does not make it a visual guide of the last episode of this great movie. The editor should concentrate at least 90% on the main theme. So many information lost. It is a big pity . Please study the way that the editor complies the DK book for so many animation. YOu can tell who can handle the proportion in a correct way.
This book is small, but it packs a great deal of information into its pages. I was very impressed with the assessment of Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarf who would be king under the mountain. O(ne cannot doubt his bravery, but his outlook is flawed. The true effects of gold on an individual are aptly shown in Thorin's behavior. Which helps to set the stage for the fi8nal battle. The Wizards, the Elves, and the Humans, are well portrayed, as they will all have a place in the final conflict. I highly recommend this book, just for its outlines of the different characters involved in this final story. JRV
A very pleasing introduction to the participants in The Hobbit, and its landscapes and plot.I especially liked the photos and background on each individual Dwarf. So many Dwarves appear almost simultaneously in the book (and the movie). I have read the book dozens of times since I first found it in 1967, and have often wished for a better way to sort out the Dwarves. Thus I was enchanted with the casting and costumes as shown in the Visual Companion. Who knew Bombur would be so distinguished and fine looking (love that red hair!)? Or that Kili would turn out to be such a heart throb?The only things I would have liked to have seen more of were Hobbit house interiors, and Smaug! Where is the dreaded Smaug!
Great for reference pictures which is why I am buying all of these.These as well the "official" ones have WONDERFUL pictures for cosplay references or fanboying or fangirling.Could all use More Lindir,Elrond,Thranduil, But I might be biased to Elves And Bret McKenzieIf you just like picture books or tolkien,And could ignore the Hobbits fan fiction, These are great!

I love this ebook. I'm so hungry and thirsty for reading and understanding God's word! I am focusing on prayers and this book is so helpful referring to bible verses and explanations that someone like me can understand. I am not speed reading . I have only finished maybe one chapter. The questions after the chapter are excellent. Made me reread over and over to really help me "get what is being taught" I forget almost everything unless I really understand. This book is perfect for me and I highly recommend it for anyone whom is like me. Alone with no persons to study with or is new to reading the Word of God.
This is a book I would highly recommend to everyone, regardless of your church affiliation. I look at the LORD"S PRAYER with better understanding and a longing to pray more according to God's plan.....Every word in this book is valuable if you want to become stronger with the Lord.

It is my desire to be nice with these reviews, but this book needs some major work. On p. 6 is the stroboscopic photo from which all the data are collected. It would be helpful if the light traces were labeled and explained more clearly. There appears to be tape at both the bottom of the handle and the end of the club. This little 12" is really critical and deserves better analysis. After all, the handle of the club is your only point of control over the clubhead. Then there are all those extraneous light traces for the elbows and who knows what else. Bottom line, the book is out of date relative to modern video and computer equipment. FYI, many years ago, my grad school mentor, the great University of Houston golf coach and mathematics professor, Dave Williams, published a similar analysis.There are some obvious errors, at least to a kinesiologist. The major part of the analysis concerns the dynamics of the angle formed between the left forearm and the shaft. Figure 2.3, on page 9 and the supporting data tables in the appendix, show an angle that cannot exist in a normal human. The Scaphoid bone in the wrist limits the angle between the club and the forearm to no more than 90 degrees. This analysis if flawed. The reporting of this too large angle is a result of optical delusion existing between a 2D image and a 3D golf swing. This makes you wonder about the affect on the math.The second major problem is the use of a two lever model to describe a two sided human swing motion. While it is true the right side does not act as a large power source (more of a stabilizer), none the less gravity and a small amount of muscle does contribute to he movement of the club. The muscles that add force are not in the arms. They are in the chest. I see not mention of the force coupling between the top hand and the bottom hand. As the end of the handle slows it's forward motion just prior to impact, the bottom hand continues to move forward. While, timing the swing so this "whipping" action increases clubhead speed, is difficult, it is not impossible. What may be needed is a better teaching model based on something closer to a seven lever model which more accurately describes what the human body is doing to the club.As a compliment to the book, Dr. Jorgensen does correctly describe the kinetic link/summation of segmental velocities which
It is just too simple. The author is way behind the current writings, especially on flexion. There are some interesting tidbits, but this book is not worth buying as it ignores some basic and important math. The section on aerodynamics was written for someone with no experience in aerodynamics. You should buy this book only if you have no technical background.
My boyfriend, an AVID golfer, really loves this book (I gave it to him as a Christmas present). I myself don't understand the swing the way he does, but he says this book is really interesting and has helped him out. It seems very technical so if you're looking for something that illustrates the swing with large pictures and step-by-step instruction then this isn't for you; but if you want to get deep into mechanics and why things happen they way they do, you'll enjoy it!
I do agree with the author that mechanical physics can and should explain explain golf, unfortunately for me I did gained and understand only small part of the book scope and promise.. I have some basic understanding of Newton Physics and still I have difficulty in understanding the mathematical and technical stuff in this book maybe because there is much to be improved in the quality of the Pictures, Figures, Mathematical Equations and the clarity of the text..
This is a terrific product, comfortable, functional and nicely proced.
This book could be at the heart of an episode (maybe a two part) trying to reduce golf down tosimply the physics behind it. And it helps smarten up the the between hole conversation as you try to explain why yousliced/hooked/bladed/blocked or otherwise mucked up a shot, missed a putt or what you are working on to improve your transfer of energy form one axis to another one.
This is an interesting if somewhat dated book on the physics of golf. If want to understand it is a good place to start although with modern trackman data I find some of his conclusions questionable.

It's dense and tough to get through, and I have to read this book very slowly in order to absorb what it's saying. This was a required book for the class I'm taking now in library school. Much of what I have read in this book so far reiterates what can be found in RDA, but it's not helpful for making anything clearer.
I ordered this book for a class and the book came on time. I love this book. This book teaches librarians how to catalog anything using the RDA, MARC, and other metadata formats used by cultural heritage centers. It also teaches the different call number systems like Dewey Decimal System and LOC.

I rented this book. It arrived in very good shape. It's not as interesting as I thought it would be but it's a required textbook.

This is a well written and extremely comprehensive text covering both descriptive and subject cataloging.
I think this book should really be two textbooks instead of one. One book might be called History and Controversies in Cataloging and Classification: Current and Past and the other by its present title and that one would be more of the practical reference learning manual that students new to this field might need. It's too paragraph driven for a handbook/manual. I find that when I need to get to the meat of doing an assignment for a class that I'm enrolled in now that this book serves as a discourager rather than an encourager. Often I end up consulting other sources out on the web and in library blogs rather than this textbook.

This is a good, compact book for those interested in a "crash course" on black history and politics. This collection represents well the issues of slavery and racial inequality, and the African American's struggle for equal justice and opportunity. I strongly recommend it for those interested in race, politics, and justice. Some themes of religion are also present throughout. A short volume of this size cannot possibly do justice to the whole of African American tradition; the selections by women are few (but present), the representation of slavery and slave issues is very heavy, and arts, culture and literature is omitted, but speeches do tend to be political and so this book remains true to that theme. I could see this book being very useful for a course on race and political justice. On the whole a good read.
Gave these to guests at a get-together I hosted. Great hostess gift too. Give with flowers or wine when you are invited to a dinner or party in someone's home. Everyone is pleasantly surprised to receive--not something people might normally purchase.
I am interested in learning more about the civil rights movement. I wasn't sure where to start. Basic history... Important figures... I mean, it's a huge subject. So, I was cruising through Amazon and came across this book. PERFECT solution.This book covers a lot of speeches by a lot of people. I was very very pleased by it. It accomplished exactly what I wanted it to. It gave me an evolution of thought with historical references. It is also a "Who's Who" of the civil rights movement.My only complaint is that it included a speech by our current president. It was totally out of place in this book.I gave this book 4 stars only because I reserve 5 stars for books that are really REALLY outstanding. No demerits here.

This past April I visted Douglas house in Baltimore so I'm glad I read this book and the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass. The guide for the tour of the home was very informative about some the events in his life.

After introducing the basic tools, problems in plane geometry are treated using approximation techniques (perturbation and numerical methods).
