I was shocked when I got to the part that Harold was gay. I didn't appreciate having to explain this to my 5 year old
*First off let me say this review is about how certain topics have specific places to be discussed and a children's book is not one of them"My son loves to read these books before going to bed. When we got to the chapter revealing Harold is gay/bi everything halted. My son didn't understand why there was a man with Harold. I was totally blindsided by this.The normal potty humor and such is standard for these books but anything outside of that just does not belong in a children's book. Revealing Harold is gay was unnecessary. George and Harold could have just been at work when their younger selves came to visit leaving out totally their sexuality. Because there could have been a way to avoid this type of controversial topic it shows it was purposely put in by the author. I am reluctant to buy any books by this author now and if I do I will have to research the books prior because getting something like this thrown in your face so unexpectedly is outrageous. Let this be a warning to all parents.
My 7-year old son absolutely LOVES these books. Not only are they funny and keep him in stitches, but they have introduced him to some longer vocabulary words that he fully understands and uses now. I find him re-reading them when he is supposed to be asleep. The chapters are short enough to keep his attention and provide a fun plot for any first grade boy (or girl). Yes, they have potty humor which to a 6/7 year old boy is hilarious though some may think it is inappropriate. He loves reading, and even started writing his own comic books after we started the series. We are on Book 5 now!
Our 2nd grader struggled with reading and her confidence while reading out loud was low. She was so shy about reading out loud that her teacher thought she had a speech issue that required a referral to the speech pathologist at her school! We knew that she just needed to read more to build her confidence, however she didn't seem to like any of the beginner chapter books that we tried. We tried 7-8 various book series before we came across Captain Underpants. I showed our daughter the cover and she giggled. When we started reading with her that night we knew we had found a winner!! She laughed throughout the entire thing! The chapters are short and easy to read. The pictures help developing readers stay interested in the developing plot, and the humor hooks them! We are so thankful that we found a series that helped our daughter learn to love reading. Just this past week she came home from school and said that she wanted to check out a Captain Underpants book at her school library but her teacher told her no! She said that her teacher doesn't allow her students to read "those kinds" of books. I was so disappointed to hear that a teacher would limit reading options for young readers. The books are very silly and a little sarcastic, but if children can connect to a book I believe they should be allowed to explore it!! If the books were inappropriate I would think they wouldn't be allowed in the school library at all. I was happy to see that my daughter pulled the book out of her backpack and said, "I got it anyway!". A must read for any young/ developing reader!
Excellent for my 8 year old son
This book was released today and I just spent three hours reading it to my seven year old son. We actually re-read the entire series, which we own, in anticipation of this sequel, and finished book 10 last night before starting this one tonight.If you are a fan of Captain Underpants then this book is a sure bet. In fact, I think it may be his best work yet in terms of plot development and amusing moments. My son laughed out loud SO many times and I have to admit I did, too!There was a possible discrepancy between this book and the previous one. In the previous book, the time travel was stated as 30 years in the future (and the adult George and Harold were 39 3/4 and 40yo respectively) but in this book it was stated repeatedly as being forty years in the future. It did not seem to be a plot development issue, just a mistake. I went back and reread it to try to figure it out but I was left a little confused. If I am incorrect, please comment!In any case, the book was amazing, and my son never would have noticed the 30years/40years thing on his own! Thanks Dav for another really funny, well put together book that encourages kids to be kids, as obnoxious and as loud and with all the potty humor that it entails. You outdid yourself on the Uranus jokes in this one, though the potty song in the last one was pretty hilarious to my seven year old, too. I am always amused at seeing him so amused. :) you keep making them and we will keep buying them, as we read them repeatedly. This one is no exception, and in fact I think it is one of your best. Thank you!
And I like them too. I learned about this series when visiting family and saw that my 6 yr old grandson had two (of the 9) books in the series. His mother liked them as they didn't have offensive words (like fart and poop and snot and other stuff that so many young people's books seem to have these days. It is male-centered in a world (it seems) of books geared to girls these days -- and the male-figure ones are outlandish in wording and bodily-function jokes. The main character is a boy mouse and the adventures are fun for young boys who want to be a hero of sorts in a simple life. The Mighty Robot is the hero but his owner is 'the little boy mouse'. Fun for adults to read out loud and many simple words so young readers can want to read them too. At first my grandson was disappointed that the 'new' books were a reprint edition of the ones he had but then he realized that the pages were thicker, the graphics cooler and now he wants new books of the two he already had (which he found a a used books store/thrift store). Even the older edition books he read at the library had torn pages (thin newsprint pages). So he agreed the new books would work out just fine. He was super surprised that his grandmother was able to find all the books he was missing (the other 7) and they arrived a few days into her trip - lots of time left to read them all.

If you're looking for a book on what to purchase to have classic style this is not the book for you. It's a lot about the authors somewhat extraordinary life and her situations that lead her to where she is today. I was happy to see that she talked about spending more on quality then quantify, but do not feel that I learned anything new other than the authors life. Her pictures are great, and it makes for an easy read. But it's not a guide on obtaining classic style.
I thought this book was about Classic Style, but it is about the author's style, which seems to be wealthy preppy style. I was vastly disappointed
Kate Schelter is a successful stylist and brand consultant who often communicates her message through delightful watercolor images. Her illustrations align with the life she has created for herself and what she has discovered she values most. I find her insights refreshing in a culture where lives permeated by materialism and social media are losing basic human characteristics cherished by previous generations. Although Ms, Schelter has lived much of her career surrounded by brands that promote a life of luxury and excess, I love her personal philosophy of luxury. She states, 'today, real luxury, to me, is ease, discipline, and personality: surrounding yourself with the people and the things you love, in the place you want to be, and nothing more.' I also really liked her idea of the 'lighthouse effect' in that you will be able to attract what you want into your life by being the light to bring those things into your sphere. Yes, a lot of what she shares has been written in other books, but she lends a fresh slant to stylish musings. For example, when she suggested to wear a wide brim hat in the rain in lieu of an umbrella, it stirred memories of my college years when I did just that. Also great advice that she attributes to a wise grandparent that "there are three things worth spending your money on, in no particular order: education, travel, and real estate' is timeless as is so much of her tips in this charming book.
A thought-provoking but not preachy read encouraging people to use what you've got and not keep chasing after new things all the time. A good reminder to appreciate what you've got - assuming you loved it when you originally bought it! - if not, why did you spend good money on it? Authenticity is key, a touch of shabby adds character and there's absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of wear and tear. Sort of Velveteen Rabbit philosophy .... A good buy for the thoughtful fashionista or someone who needs to apply more thought before they shop.
I received this as a gift and was thrilled with it. The illustrations are gorgeous! I will say that if you are looking for a book about cultivating a wardrobe of classics, this probably isn’t for you. The book is more about what classic style means to the author and how she developed her signature style. That said, I really enjoyed reading it!
Well it's not exactly textbook-like. I was looking for a textbook and this is not that. Actually it's like a personal blog of the author and I don't find it helpful
Lovely illustrations which hearken back to a day of a simpler life before 24-hour news outlets and wi-fi 24/7. Sweet stories of the author's life and family with illustrate why these simple little items mean so much to her and shaped her life. A lovely book to curl up with and become reminded of the little things that evoke memories for so many. Would make a charming gift as well.
I rarely buy books non-discounted, but I loved the idea of seeing the watercolors and description. Very pretty artwork, and it's nice to read about the author's style. As a new-ish mom, this is about all the seriousness I can handle in a book!

I got this for my granddaughter who was going into her 7th open heart surgery. That is a "big" thing for a 13 year old to have to shoulder & I am sure she had a lot to write about. Her mother even thanked for this Xmas gift.
My 6 year old daughter loves this book. It is a great place for her to draw and write how she is feeling. I love it!
One of my best finds so far for my creative 8 year old daughter. She loves writing / doodling in it.

This is the third book by Alda Sigmundsdóttir that I've read since returning from my first trip to Iceland 3 weeks ago. Being of Norwegian heritage, I've always been fascinated about the Vikings discovery and settlement of Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland ("Vinland"), but I knew very little about that history or the culture that developed in these places.I think of Alda as kind of a "reverse Leif Ericson" - she was born in Iceland and raised in Canada and Western Europe, before returning as an adult to "The Land of the Nice". What's awesome about Alda's books is her perspective as an "outsider's insider", and her super concise, articulate yet informal writing style. The books I've read are collections of short essays, which makes them very quick reads.Think of The Little Book of the Hidden People as an Icelandic version of Grimm's Fairy Tales (Alda makes this comparison). Like Grimm's Fairy Tales, there are clear morals to each story that reinforce cultural values. Now, imagine a book of Grimm's Fairy Tales, where each fable is followed by well researched explanations of that story's cultural and historical context, all written in a very vernacular and accessible style. If you can picture that, and it sounds interesting, go ahead and order this book without delay.
According to legend, Eve , mother of mankind, was asked by god to display all her children. In a bout of laziness she selected he best ones and got them presentable. God counted them and made them royalty, the ones that were hidden were confined to a status of dwelling in boulder and mountains. These are the Huldu folk of Iceland which many refer to as elves.Legend has it that if you are in the wilderness you may suddenly see one of them only to have them disappear into a rock or boulder. Much of the lore about these folk is reminiscent of faerie and elf folklore of old Europe.It was on a whim that I decided to purchase this slender volume and believe me I am glad that I made this purchase. Too bad it was not longer as I consumed this volume in a matter of hours and it left me wanting more. Not only were the stories entertaining and the authoress's notes after each story informative but she also has a strong dose of common sense and strong Icelandic pride.SHe starts off dispelling a rumor put forward in Vanity Fair that most Icelander believe in Elves and will not  begin a construction project unless an elf seer is brought in and determines whther or not it is ok to build there. The authoress states boldy that most people do not believe in elves and that before construction begins the place is checked out to see if there is any valuable archaeology or whether it is important in folklore. After all why destroy your own  history.The stories of the Huldu folk arose from a harsh environment where only the strongest could survive. Believe me old Iceland was tough. Bitter cold, lack of food and primitive lodging made survival difficult. More over men could not marry until they accumulated enough wealth which was tough to do. Sexual relation were limited to reduce the number of births. If  the man of the house died the woman lost everything and was sent forward as a laborer .That meant kids were fostered out and the holding auctioned off. People could disappear in fog drifts or get lost along the way from one farmstead to another.Where as the people were poor, the elves had plenty. Elves were known to seduce mortals, this could explain unwanted pregnancies . Humans were not allowed to dance together because it lead in their eyes to illicit unions. Elves often got people to dance. Being abducted by elves could be used to explain away how a child could get lost in a snow drift or step over a precipice. At least a parent could think the child had found a better life.THe book itself is composed of 21 stories collected orally by the author. THey involve many motifs. One popular motif is a mortal woman called a away from church or home to help an elf woman give birth. Th woman is reward but gets an ointment on her eye that allows her to see elves. When the they find out they nullify the effect of the ointment or use some spittle to weaken the eye. Nicer then the European version where the woman in blinded. Several stories involve women meeting hidden folk in a dairy, being seduced and then made pregnant. Later the child is born and the woman gives it to the Huldu Folk. Later the lover comes back after she is married and the two die in each others arms. The child is sometimes raised by the remaining parent or goes off on it's own. There are also stories of those who disturbed eleves and ended up receiving a poor fortune for it. Others who helped the eleves received good fortune.Enjoy these tales they are a quick and entertaining read and the author opens up a door into the mind and heart of Iceland.
I loved this book for its sociological/anthropological take on Icelandic mythology, rather than the usually inexplicable "fantastic epic" prism taken by many authors who venture into this world. It brings very unique points of views which is what makes indie books, such as this one, very interesting, important and of great relevance to be published. Works of this kind enriches and enlightens the big mass publishing market. I have a special love for Iceland, even though I know so little about it. Books like this one are a great way to learn the history of a country though the eyes of the common folk, the everyday farmer, the ordinary people, and basically through unofficial eyes of written History, done by authorities.
Annoying that the author sets the premise that she wants to tell us traditional stories about elves and hidden people, then says she doesn't believe in them and deconstructs the stories in obvious and not very insightful ways. Just ok. I gave it away as soon as I read it. Meh
This short eBook from Alda is another in her continuing series of informal yet almost 'scholarly' works about Icelandic culture. As with her previous efforts, the only fault I can find with any of them is that I finish them too quickly. This book is a welcome respite from 'cute' and sanitized folk stories. There are lots of sexual escapades, some very peculiar Icelandic customs, as well some touching tales of love ending in grief. Alda does a great job in filling in the background on the stories, some of which would be real 'head-scratchers' without her explanations.
-A wonderful little book and an excellent introduction to Icelandic folklore. I used this as a text for my seminar on world folklore because it gave the students a succinct approach to some standard Icelandic tales in addition to other Icelandic reading they were doing before a study tour to Reykjavik. What was most valuable for our purposes is the author's distinct interpretation at the end of every tale. Her strong point of view allowed for some great discussion on the meaning behind the stories.
We had been to Iceland . I have read several of the little books that have been written . I wish I had read this one before we left. Great book and very interesting .
This book is a lovely introduction to the tales of the hidden people. I appreciated that the stories where not embellished and that locations and genealogical ending remarks where left intact.
