This poet has the subtle gift of combining everyday words into mystery. For example, "All the exit routes: someone else's jeep, the bottle of pills, your daddy's DNA." She has either lived or imagined living a lot of interesting things in interesting places--although some things are mundane events she makes interesting. Along these poetic paths she cycles through themes of exile and resettlement, of religious confusion, of Middle Eastern wars and Israeli settlements, of substance and sexual abuse, and of course hoving over everything, questions of identity.One section of the book is devoted to the poet's failed marriage (which apparently went poorly from the start) and lesbian encounters. There is little narrative here; instead, in the manner that's perfect for expression through poetry, the various themes that have dominated her life pop up in different combinations and permutations. Mercifully, the book ends with acceptance, a new relationship with a lover and with herself.
This powerful book of poems reads almost as a memoir, dealing with growing up, straddling different cultures, and trying to come to terms with society as a whole. Alyan succeeds in weaving jarring snapshots of trauma with haunting, and often hopeful, poetry.

I got this book yesterday, not finished with it yet but sure have been enjoying the memories. I've lived in Henderson since 1963 and remember a lot of what's in the book. We as kids got to pick where we wanted to go to dinner for our birthday with just the parents and we always picked the Swanky Club, yum. There sure are a lot of places I miss and so sad they are no longer around, but we still have some good ole places to go. Thanks

I'm a lover of all things dark. And for me the darker the better. It's a genre that I found myself craving after years of reading and it was unexpected. The thirst for darkness for me is intoxicating and yes probably a little crazy, but hey we all have our favs and dark is mine.When Beauty landed, I knew that I was going to get dark, and a whole lot of it. But I honestly never expected the darkness and the sheer brutal cruelty that came with it.Never did I expect to get totally drawn to the depraved mind of a girl so tormented and broken.Never did I expect the beauty behind the torment, the pain, the hurt and the sheer anguish of a girl and her innocence.Kirtsy Dallas has written a heartbreaking and soul destroying read that I fell deeply in love with. A rawness like no other. A disturbing read that completely stole my heart and took my breath away.I cannot rate Beauty high enough.Whoever would've thought revenge could be so bitterly sweet.5 stars.

Geez Louise!! Kirsty Dallas has sure packed one huge punch with this 1st instalment of Beauty and Harts story.This book is dark and raw. It takes you to a place you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy where this woman suffers your worst nightmare. But they say revenge is sweet and there is a scene in this book that although gory and bloody, had me cheering her on and if I am honest, feeling very proud of this fictional character that I became invested in on page 1!This author has gone into some pretty dark and twisted parts of her mind to be able to create this fictional character that has endured and suffered the worst of the world and have her come out deciding that she is not a victim. This character wants no pity. She is truly a thing of Beauty. She is strong and determined, she is capable and resilient. Hart quickly becomes her partner in crime and you see why very quickly. They are two sides of the same coin. Ying and Yang if you like.There is no way you can get to the end of this first instalment and not feel invested and proud of Beauty and Hart. They are two characters that will stay with you for a long time after you finish and put the book down.I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2 and see how their story ends. I have a feeling that my mind won't be the same once I get my hands on it!!

Their self honesty I found very appealing.Revenge is something that is extremely understandable and although some would argue that it meets the ‘monster’ criteria too, and yes it does, this story makes you ponder how you would feel if it was you or your daughter? So revenge? Bring it on!Warning...this is a cliffhanger but not one that leaves you gasping in shock so it’s all good. I am looking forward to the next book already.

Long an admirer of Mr. Martino’s work, I eagerly awaited the publication of his book. It did not disappoint. Beautifully photographed, it is a nice overview of many stellar projects he created in AZ and Southern CA. The text provides clarity to the design challenges and solutions. I highly recommend this book for the general reader as well as landscape architects.
I had heard of Steve through the Phx Desert Botanical Garden (I believe he was a Speaker?) as I recently moved to Phoenix. This man is a genius because he treads so lightly when creating gardens or remodeling homes for his Clients. He doesn’t create more debris, he eliminates it, which is so unusual. I read the book, cover to cover, in one sitting, and can’t wait to read it again. There’s much to learn, but it’s not a step by step. For ex., the way he situated an overhead screen to allow morning light but block afternoon sun. Sounds simple, but when you see how he did it, very creative. If you live in Phoenix, Palm Springs or Tucson, this book needs to be in your collection.
I found this book while looking for inspiration for my sloping front yard in Los Angeles. The photos are wonderful, and Mr Martino's observations are very helpful to understand why he makes the choices that he has made. Many of the plants are named in the captions, but most of them are reused throughout his projects, so it helps if you recognize them by sight. There are other books out there that are catalogs for desert plants, but only Steve Martino can show us how to use them as an artist. The use of richly colored plaster walls with the plant choices is absolutely fantastic!
This has to be the most beautiful book on landscape architecture I have ever owned. Thank you for being an inspiration & creative voice in the profession.

Very clear design principles. Not hostile to the environment. Many hardscape examples can be applied to non-desert plans too. Martino is a standout! Only reason I don’t give five stars is due to slightly wonky binding on my copy.
