I purchased Blood Ninja not expecting much (a ninja vampire story-how silly)but hoping to get some seventh graders interested in our Japan unit. I enjoyed the story so much that I purchased Blood Ninja II right away! The characters are very human and the story includes information about Japan, the feudal society, the code of the samurai, and ninja lengends that I can refer to in class. Four students have already read it and recommended it to friends. Any book that can get 7th grade boys to read is a hit-but the fact that I could refer to this during class was even better!

A white guy writing Japanese fiction? No way! What a rare treat! Honestly though, Lake did a great job of not coming off as a fanboy. He knew his history and culture and made good use of it. The story itself took a cliched period drama and injected it with the vampire craze. This isn't something that is really innovative for nerds like me but for those who haven't experienced wuxia it will be a new experience.

Update: I'm doing my second readthrough and I'm really appreciating this time. Will give a full reviews when I actually fully read it now that he's released 1.0It's not bad, but it's still over my head. It's possible functional programming is just a bit much for me at this point, but it would be nice for someone to really try and dumb it down. It would be nice if Alvin can start it off making it stupid simple scale it more nicely. Though truthfully, it is easier to understand than other books/reading material I have come across.
The author has done a great job in putting together a book which explains in a very approachable fashion the difficult concepts which exist in functional programming and how Scala relates to it. The author does not weigh you down with difficult examples, but has chosen to explain functional programming primarily, providing examples on Scala as a means of explaining those concepts. This was very unusual and very welcome. My only issue with the book is the size, as it is a very large, thick book and takes up a lot of space on my bookshelf!
Alvin Alexander writes in a very concise style that is easy to comprehend. He does exceptional job of translating the jargon associated with functional programming. This is a good place to start if you are new to both Scala and functional programming or just needing a refresher. Most FP books tend to start at too high of a level or already you have learned Haskell. This book will save you a lot of time by skipping both of those prerequisites even though you may want learn Haskell later to round out your FP knowledge.
I teach university-level big data classes and have found this text very helpful in grounding myself in functional principles and practices that I want to convey to my students. Mr. Alexander does a thorough job of describing how immutability and pure functions combine to produce bullet-proof ( or at least bullet resistant ) code. His emphasis on strong type-aware coding is sorely needed as multi-core concurrent/distributed programming become the norm. The book is long, but is worth following the careful description of the basic ideas underlying important concepts such as impure functions within a compositional framework. I think this would be a suitable book following an initial language such as Python.
I thought this book was amazing.While there a more technical introductions to FP such as Functional Programming in Scala, I had tried it and found it hard going. The exercises in particular went a bit beyond simply illustrating the concepts, and were just plain hard.This book on the other hand has a lot more conversational approach to FP. The author explain the concepts one by one, building on top of precedent lessons. He also talks about how he feels about each concept, what new ability it gives us, when it is good to use, etc.I often see Functional Programming in Scala as a book that gets recommended to aspiring functional programmers and that suggestion is very misguided. Functional Programming in Scala is terrific once you've been doing FP for a few months to a year.Functional Programming is daunting and hard to learn: Functional Programming Simplified makes that easier. It is the book to get you started on FP.Wish I could rate it more highly.
Most enjoyable book I’ve read by far. Simple, intuitive and very detailed, FP Simplified (Scala ed) covers everything you’d ever ask about Functional Programming paradigm. The author guides the reader through concepts in a way the reader will get the point. Then, he names the concept explained how it’s known as.I don’t recommend this book for people who don’t know Scala, though. I’d suggest to read some of Scala lang before read this one.
I'm learning Ocaml and have no interest in Scala, but since there are so few Ocaml books available, I was trying to find something that would give me a good overview of Functional Programming in general. This book promised to be that, and it delivered. I'd say 50% of the content (why functional programming, defining a bunch of terms, how to structure your applications) is not specific to Scala, and the parts that do talk specifically about Scala are directly applicable to other languages as well. Seeing examples of FP written in Scala has also helped me understand some of Ocaml's design decisions better.Overall the book is well-written and approachable. It covers everything you could want to know about functional programming, and every chapter has several links to more books and sources in case you want to dig even deeper.
The best book about functional programming i've read so far. It's like Alvin is beside me and do the pair programming together. So many "aha!" moments when reading this book, especially when he explains the concepts using clear and concise code + the quotes of computer scientists and references that make you learn even more than "just" functional programming and Scala.I am a reader since the version 0.1.2 (ebook).PS: This is my first book review on Amazon.

My son and I review 10 random words each day in the card. I like having these handy cards on the go. The sentence on the back helps my son use context clues to determine the meaning. These are excellent,
I homeschooled at the time I bought these for my 4th grade daughter. It greatly increased her vocabulary, and these were cheaper than Barnes and Nobles price. We did one letter of the alphabet at a time, and when she mastered them, we moved to the next letter, some words I didn't even know so I learned too!
These flashcards helped, and it was fun to study! I try to keep things silly and fun for my son, because sometimes school can be boring and even more boring when he gets home & needs to study again! Sometimes he says "enough already!" But he actually enjoyed these cards. His reading has improved because of his confidence from studying with these!
These cards are amazing. The word in the front with a sentence to give more context and on the back the word appears again with how to pronounce it as well as a definition. The cards are not thin contrary to some reviews and the box is an nice way to see how many they’ve learned along the way. I highly recommend these cards!
Got these for my 4th grader who was struggling with reading. They definitely have helped to expand her vocabulary. I like how on one side it breaks out how to pronounce the word & identifies if its a noun, verb etc. and gives the definition then on the other side it gives a sentence using the word. Wold recommend.
cheap thin paper is not good for flash cards. should be card stock by definition...... these will wear out and be ruined very quickly

I am a first time parent and my baby boy started crying at about 1 week of age and decided not to stop. He is 2 months old and we are a much happier family now.After hours and hours of research online, visits to the pediatrician, trying everything from gripe water to probiotics (L. reuteri by gerber), changing from breast to bottle with 10 different nipples, visiting a gastroenterologist, zantac, prilosec, sleep positioners, baby carriers and experiencing pure helplessness; we finally have a little peace with our son. This book wont instantly solve your babies pain, but it will definitely provide you with information to help you treat your baby and give you some basis on what you can kind of expect.Our solution turned out to be prilosec and keeping the baby upright throughout the day (on bouncers, swings, arms or carriers) After he started taking prilosec, he would still have his episodes at night but once we put him to sleep, he would sleep and eat just fine and wake up to be the happiest baby on the block =) The gastroenterologist even told us that this is a combination of reflux and colic since he was fussy every night at 7pm. I didnt accept that and wanted to know why he was fussy at the same time every day and why he was so happy without problems throughout the night to the morning.Colic solved answered these questions for me. It all makes sense now and that is really all I ever wanted.Why was the baby fussy at the same time every night? Because he is winding down from the whole day of being awake and is just super tired and fussy. Combine that with some reflux pain, episodes of crying resulting in more air to cause discomfort, and we would have a unhappy baby until he knocked himself out. Now, we just try to get him to sleep earlier. He will still have his episodes until he sleeps but we manage it much better now.Why was baby happy in the mornings even though he is sleeping on his back and feeding throughout the night? This is because he is much more efficient at eating during his dream feeds and doesnt swallow so much air. During the day, he tries to force feed.Looking back, one of the things I wish we would have done is feed the baby on demand. Logically, you would think you should feed the baby a little less to help with digestion. This is not so and I wonder now, how much of the crying was caused by sheer hunger.Now, we are a much happier family. We know our child so much better now and will patiently wait to take him off the prilosec. Hopefully, his little tummy matures sooner than later.FYI, with the omeprazole (prilosec), I do have worries because I have read about long term effects and hip and bone density issues. We are going to try and wean our baby off ASAP but the benefit outweighs the risk of long term damage right now.
Omg. After 6 weeks of trying to figure out what is going on with my son, doing online research of his 'colic' symptoms and treating that with otc treatments getting us no where. I read this book and it's my son to a T. I'm grateful that his next apt is in days, hoping this is a game changer with a plan that will ease his pain and suffering. I recommend this book to parents that are struggling like my husband and i.
This is an Amazing book. I cant describe how valuable it has been in helping us advocate for our sons' pain. my 6 weeks old son has been crying non stop and not sleeping at night- when we went to the doctor he gave us a "colic" diagnosis and made us feel a little hysterical saying some babies cry and we have to wait for it to pass. After reading a little bit online we went back and insisted on treatment- the doc. prescribed Zantac, which did not help at all. We didnt know what to do- and then we read this book. The book gave us so much information about what kind of treatment options are available and the most important thing- it gave us the confidence to go back to our doctor and ask for the right treatment for our son. a must read book for anyone who is dealing with a child that is crying and hurting.
bought for my grandaughter as her little guy is really having problems with formula and refuses the bottle. Hope this well give us some help for him so he'll be more comfortable and she will not be so stressed and worried about him.
Bought one for me and one for my next door neighbor and this book is a total lifesaver for both of us. Our son suffers from pretty bad reflux and her daughter from a dairy intolerance. We both learned so much and were able to better care for/advocate for our children.

My boys (age 4 and 7) like minecraft and enjoyed reading this book. But I read it out loud to my younger son and there was pretty much a typo on every page. Like "the're" or "heep"....they even spelled Matthew wrong and put "mathhew" on one page. When we read it we each had a pencil in hand it was like a game to see who could find the next error. Honest.The story is ok, but it's very, very poorly edited. In fact I'm not sure if anyone read it through before publishing. HA! If they had someone spend 15-20 min. editing it would have been a little better. Poor spelling, poor grammar, a lot of inconsistencies. Otherwise...3 stars. Notch bless you for trying. Next time get an editor perhaps.....
As others have mentioned, this book is riddled with errors. I bought it to encourage my son to read, too - this may inspire him to be a copy editor! I agree with the other reviewers that the story itself is dull and the writing is awkward, in addition to having issues with the duplicate panels and such. The typeface is also ridiculously small. I hope the next edition is better; there are so many other quality graphic novels and comic books that I will check out first, though. This one earns 2 stars instead of 1 for holding my little guy's attention.
So I have never read the comic but it has helped my 3rd grader take up an interested in reading. That makes it a winner in my book :)
I couldn't decide whether to give this book a one star or a two start. I was so disappointed in the book. There were so many errors in the book, spelling and duplicate panels! My 10 yr old didn't like the book either. He loves Minecraft! But the story wasn't well thought out. It was so obvious that this book wasn't even edited. Nobody proof-read this book before publishing! I like that the pictures were in Minecraft. That was unique, but that's about all. A major disappointment. Don't waste your money. I liked one posters comments about going through the book with your child and seeing who could catch the mistakes first!!! =)
Bought it for my little girl and she loves everything Minecraft. This item is probably selling because people are happy their little kids like it, but as an adult, I expected more content rather than living off the Minecraft hype. Totally not worth it.if you think that all that matters is if your kids like it, then if it sold for $20 you'd still have no regret. You have been warned!!!
The price is outrageous for what you get. It is only 50 pages. Being a "Collection" I expected it to be close to as thick as the Minecraft graphic novels we've purchased for almost half the price. My kid enjoyed reading it for about 20 minutes and then she was done. Waste of $11 to me.
This was a great cute little book that my 6 and 8 year old read a few times. 3 months later though, my children have forgotten about it. Doesn't this happen with all things at their she though?
It got my non reader to read something....so that alone gets it 5 stars

I thought I wasn't going to like this one, but it won me over. The can't-stop-reading impulse kicked in about half-way through the book.First of all, at first it seemed like there wasn't much of a connection between the two main characters, but as the story progressed their reasons for liking each other developed and I actually ended up finding them to be one of Gist's best fictional match-ups.Yes, the bird thing was annoying and Georgie was a quirky character somewhat along the lines of Essie from the Trouble books, but she wasn't unlikeable. She obviously had a lot of spunk and personality which is a nice change from the damsel-in-distress type. And Luke became more and more loveable throughout the story.The physical details were not too much, a small bit toned down from other Gist novels. There was more of a plot beyond the sexual tension.All in all, I ended up very satisfied with the story and looking forward to getting my hands on the last few of this author's novels that I haven't devoured yet.
I love Deeanne Gist’s novels, but this one may be my favorite! Georgie Gail, the heroine in the novel is humorous without being goofy. She’s a feminist who recognizes the harmony and God given differences between male and female, neither are better, just different. But together we are better. It’s charming with some heart stopping adventure and a little bit of love too. Bravo!
I will preface this review by saying that I do not rate any book five stars unless I intend to read it so many times the binding is falling apart :) That being said a four-star review is a great read by my standards. I enjoy authors such as Lori Wick, Francine Rivers, and others. I recently discovered Deeanne Gist and fell in love with Maid for a Match. The research and character development in Mrs. Gist's books is wonderful and each time I buy a new book I can't wait to dive in.Love on the Line is no exception to my description of Mrs. Gist. The main characters are both believable and like-able. The plot line is complex enough to keep even the most avid romance reader interested while not being so complex that it must be read in one sitting. As in other books by Mrs. Gist the male and female leads are not the only characters and the sub-plots in this particular book are wonderful.My only negative comment to Love on the Line would be that it was hard to get into at first because of the amount of time that was spent on birds. Further into the book I realized that part of the bird sidebar would have come from Mrs. Gist's devotion to being accurate to the period and therefore the issue would have been an important issue at the time just as bicycling was important to Courting Trouble and Deep in the Heart of Trouble (two of my favorites by Deeanne Gist).A wonderful book overall and I look forward to the next book by Deeanne Gist.
I really enjoyed Love On The Line. Starting off with a great promise of a fun roller coster of a love tale with a telephone operator and a Texas Ranger. But it is so much more than that - Georgie is the aforementioned switchboard operator and Lucius Laudrum is the ranger but their first meeting isn't one to remember. It involves Gerogie being involved in a train heist and feeling more sympathy for the robber than that of the lawmaker.Their next meeting is with Lucius posing as Luke Palmer - a linesman for the phone company or Troubleman.The rest of the tale takes us on a fun ride of these two never really figuring each other out - especially Georgie. And it's a fun ride.On a negative side -Geogie's personality can grate sometimes. Her almost obsessive compulsion around birds and understandably the use of those precious friends as decoration for ladies hats. While commendable it did become a little irritating as the story progressed.Gladly the story does wind it up a gear as we neared the conclusion and it had just enough twists and turns to keep my attention. In the whole, a delightful story which will gladly full a dull afternoon with no trouble at all.
Deeanne Gist is in my top three of favorite authors. I have loved each and every book of hers that I have read. Including this one. The first paragraph had my attention and kept me reading.I have never read a book where someone is so into birds which made this story kind of silly yet set it apart from all the rest. Add to that a switchboard operator as well and you have a unique mix in a character.What lady doesn't want to read about a Texas Ranger?! I admit, I enjoyed Luke Palmer's story. What a twist at the end of the story that I hadn't guessed until over half way through the book. My guess was correct though I won't mention what about. You'll have to grab a copy and see for yourself.What I loved about the story is the strength of Georgie and Luke's unwavering faith. They totally trust that God is in control, and that He will take care of all that is going on. This was refreshing because there is normally one person who has doubts.
This is one of my "go-to" authors for romance. As usual, the research was amazing and the romance was not the peck on the last page. Their relationship wasn't entirely predictable though - and her story and characters were somewhat off the beaten path as well. I loved the twists and turns.Luke has to keep secrets. His character has been chasing one criminal for a long time and could easily have become another Captain Ahab chasing his very own Moby Dick. His back story makes him so much more interesting. It's hilarious when Georgie makes fun of his "real" self to him. I could picture that scene vividly in my mind --- always a sign of a great book.Georgie has high standards and ideals. She is a feminist, loves to read, and values education. She has an obsession with birds and fights to stop their parts from being used on hats. This causes division within the town and much of the action in the latter part of the book.This was a great read and reinforced why I keep pre-ordering all her books. It's on the border between 4.5 to 5 so I'll round up. :o)
