Wow! This book "overflows" with what spiriutal leadership looks like, feels like and the lasting Kingdom Fruit as a result of this kind of influence. As a favorite prof use to say..."application is not transformation"! Alan makes this truth come alive and invites us into a leadership and gospel of grace with the goal of abiding in God's presence, trusting the deeper, transforming work of the Spirit to result in fruitfulness for an abundant life that spills over in everything thought, done and said. It is a picture of a "Mary-Martha"! How contemplation and action are integrated with a pace that honors both our humaness and God's Divinity. A must read with simple practices for deep change for anyone that dares to live life with God and others in humble trust, dependency and joyful action. The practices and reflections in this book will continue to be used to open my heart, mind and life to God. The desired result? ...the outcome?...the fruit? ...the the overflow of His character and grace that will influence my daily life for Kingdom purposes. Loved this book for its integration of spiriutal and leadership development and for its inspiration and empowerment.
Alan Fadling has notched it up in his second book, "An Unhurried Leader." Leading from overflow is a recurring theme reminding us that God is our source of power and our respite. Many of the other leadership models exhort us to take charge of ourselves-- a narcissistic way of diminishing the Creator's influence on all of us.Alan's final chapter, "Working With God," encourages us to join the Divine in our work rather than working for God (or ourselves or others). This chapter had such an impact on me that I underlined more than 50% of it!This book will nourish your soul and provide the propellant you need to ignite and sustain your leadership. Working with God rather than for God is radical and transformative.
I was moved by Alan's raw honesty of his journey as a leader that I could relate to. This inspired me to dig deeper in God and bring my thirsts to the one and only who can truly satisfy. I found this book inspirational and refreshing and also enjoyed the practical reflections.
Where do I begin... this book and it's revelation on rest for leaders changed my life. Some of the big takeaways were Alan's study on Isaiah 55 and Ezekiel 47. It's like scripture that had been in the Bible all along were jumping out at me in a new way. I feel less burdened and closer to Jesus, my life's travel companion, in a way I never had before. I am making it a point to schedule uninterrupted communion with God on a daily basis and am actually planning on a silent retreat this fall (something I would have NEVER considered.) Please, if you are a leader in any capacity (a person of influence), this book is vital. I know my words do not begin to adequately describe this book and it's effect on me, just know you will be changed.Blessings - Leslee Owen
This book is a welcome subject. There are many books available on personal spiritual formation as well as Christian leadership but Mr. Fadling's book speaks to how spending time with God can transform us to be people with influence and leadership formed by our relationship with God just as Jesus life on Earth accounts to.I appreciated the thoughtful questions and practices offered with each chapter. This book would make an excellent group study.The podcast that the author has at Unhurried Living offers interviews with a broad array of leaders that offer great insights into the Unhurried ways of God.
As one predisposed to rushing and conquering in leadership, this book helped me to see the value in slowing down. It has already impacted my leadership and my life. Much less stress and better leadership.
Must read for those in ministry as well as those leading anything! This will be mandatory for any staff members I bring on in the future
