A Plea for the Animals: The Moral, Philosophical, and Evolutionary Imperative to Treat All Beings with Compassion, by Matthieu Ricard

Review

“Are animals mere things, here for us to exploit? Or are they rather sentient, often intelligent beings, entitled to live their own lives? Matthieu Ricard examines theological, philosophical and scientific thinking on both sides of the issue and concludes that without doubt we must recognize each animal is an individual deserving of our compassion and respect. A Plea for the Animals is fascinating, instructive and compelling, speaking to us on both an intellectual and emotional level.”—Jane Goodall"A Plea for the Animals continues and completes the wonderful work Matthieu Ricard did in his Altruism, drawing on science and philosophy to show that compassion cannot be limited to members of our own species but must be extended to all beings capable of suffering.  This is a book for everyone who is willing to consider the case for a radical change in the way we treat animals."—Peter Singer, author of Practical Ethics and Animal Liberation"A Plea for the Animals is an outstanding and well-referenced book that surely will make a difference for the billions of nonhumans who routinely suffer globally at the hands of humans, be it in slaughterhouses, laboratories, or other captive situations, or in what's left of their natural environs. Matthieu Ricard's heartfelt plea for us to tap into our caring and compassionate selves and to treat other animals with unbounded dignity and respect will go a long way toward inspiring people to see other animals for who they truly are, to feel for them deeply, and to recognize how they fully depend on us to grant them the ability to be able to live their lives in peace and safety -- to survive and to thrive in an increasingly human-dominated world. By personally rewilding and understanding what other animals want and need, humans will more easily reconnect and become re-enchanted with other animals so that peaceful coexistence becomes a reality, and it will be a win-win for all concerned."—Marc Bekoff, author of Animals Matter and Rewilding Our Hearts: Building Pathways of Compassion and Coexistence

A sometimes uncomfortable but excellent book. I ordered this book because I like Matthieu Ricards teachings. A vegetarian a long time ago, I thought I'd read this and not be surprised by much. I was. I also commend the author on presenting the case for a vegan/vegetarian diet with lots of scientific reasoning and studies to back up claims. Knowing the amount of water it takes to produce a quarter pound of beef was astonishing.

This is a great book for vegans and vegetarians (unfortunately, the only folks who will read it). The 4th chapter(which explains how agribusiness works and the suffering of the animals and people working in the business) is a little tough to take.I think it is meant to be that way. All meat eaters should read this book so they know what they are supporting with their actions and money.I like the author's writing and have read a few of his books.

The best historical and moral account on the topic of animal welfare to date. This is a masterful piece of research, exhaustively documented by footnote and citation. Anyone who reads this and continues to participate in the perpetuation of animal cruelty, through the consumption of animal flesh and other "uses" must surely be lost in deep self deception. Thank you, Matthieu Ricard.

I've read many books over the years on this topic, but this one was a bit different. It is more scientifically-based, so many people may find it a bit dry to read, but it's so well researched and eye opening that I really think it's an important book. Some parts were difficult to read, simply because it made me want to cry reading about things that we humans do to animals around the world. While I didn't learn anything new regarding the meat industry, I did learn more about vivisection, bull fighting, and the wild/exotic animal trade, among other things. Ricard covers all angles, making a brilliant case for compassion for animals. There were many quotes that I liked from this book, with my favorite being: "Most of us are fond of animals, but our compassion stops at the edge of our plate." Two thumbs up for "A Plea for Animals..."!

Thoughtful, well-researched, articulate argument for the cessation of suffering of animals.

This book is so well written and such humanity shines through in every word. The research is extensive and if you still could do anything to harm animals after reading this, well, I would be amazed.

A must read for anyone who would like to know all the ways we justify our mistreatment of animals.

A please for the Animals is well reasoned and excellent approach to this subject. Impressive.
