Eleven years ago, while still a college student, Williams, who had become intrigued by the Amish as "a living link between a simpler time" and the hectic world of today, asked Coblentz to write a newspaper column he had envisioned about life in an Amish community. Today, her syndicated monthly column appears nationwide in more than 100 newspapers. This book is not just a compilation of the columns and recipes, however; Williams begins with his and Coblentz's story, than follows with a chapter on the history of the Amish. He has organized the recipes by meal, from breakfast to supper, with separate sections on dessert and on Sundays and special occasions. Each chapter contains history and background from Williams, comments and reminiscences from Coblentz, and some of her original columns, as well as additional recipes. Williams's instincts were true-Coblentz's description of her life offers a fascinating glimpse into another era (her columns might almost have been written by a contemporary of Laura Ingalls Wilder). This is a book with a lot of Amish lore and basic history about the Amish. I live in Amish country now and grew up near Amish country so this is "old hat" to me. But if this is a new world of people and history and customs, the book is enjoyable for the short descriptions and autobiographical stories.The recipes are fairly authentic as I see people cook around here that I know but...they are a lot of "open a can of mushroom soup" and more or less founded on the principle of stretching noodles and beef with sauces to make rib-sticking farmer's meals. The famous breakfast casserole (a sort of savory bread and bulk sausage pudding) that we all love at our local Amish restaurant is in the book. It's pretty easy and variants of this are useful for brunch parties, sleepovers and guests when you have to serve a crowd. And there is an "inexpensive" fruitcake recipe making two hearty loaves that is based on a very old boiled raisin cake that has no eggs and used to be made with any fat that was at hand (dripping, lard, bacon fat, butter.) It is sometimes called "War Cake" as it can be made with any grade of flour--this is a variant with chopped candied fruit and nuts to make it up like a Christmas cake.Spaghetti sauce involves hamburger and a big lashing of tomato juice. Lots of cheesy, potato casseroles.There are a few gems, homemade bread, Friendship (sour dough) bread, summer sausage, and the mashed potatoes people make around here (using cream cheese for the butter) but most of the recipes are things you can find in Betty Crocker or other standard ladies auxiliary type cook books.

I became aware of Elizabeth Coblentz after moving to Indiana in 1999. I used to write my Aunt weekly and include Elizabeth's newspaper article with my letter. She loved them as well. I was so glad to see Kevin Williams, Elizabeth's editor, had a cookbook published about Elizabeth and including her recipes. Elizabeth's articles were a personal glimpse into a quieter and more peaceful life, like stepping back in time. I admire the strength and peace of that lifestyle. I will enjoy making many of these recipes too, as I now try to avoid prepared (boxed, mixes and manufactured) foods as much as possible.

I was looking for authentic recipes, made entirely from scratch.. These are good but I'm disappointed to see store bought ingredients.. I like the anecdotes that go with it..

One of my all-time favorite books. I loved recipes and the wonderful stories of her beloved family. I have been reading weekly The Amish Cook in my newspaper. IT was a pleasant surprise that this was HER book. I also liked learning about Amish customs. Can't say enough about this book. Loved it.

I never thought I could become so emotionally moved by a cookbook...shed tears at the end...beautiful book...a keeper.

I grew up in Pennsylvania and this book reminds me of a simpler time. The recipes are some I grew up eating, like fried mush, so reading this brings back memories of my family sitting down to dinner every night. Very comforting book to curl up and read.

I have most of these books. I've tried several of the decks and enjoyed the process. I love the baking sections and all the commentary on Amish life.

Great book with many Amish recipes along with why and how the Amish cook and live. Thoroughly enjoyed reading.
