Each of six chapters in the first section covers a specific time and stylistic period; historical information introduces each of the chapters. The entries provide the date, a brief written description, and the price value of each piece, augmented by more than 1700 photographs, some in color. Prices are either from an auction house, collector, or dealer, with the source used indicated for every entry. Helpful appendixes cover how to date jewelry, distinguish metals, authenticate pieces, and identify designer and trademarks. The unfortunate absence of an index limits access; however, the table of contents is detailed. This is a wonderful reference or resource book that is a "must have" for anyone that collects, buys, and/or sells jewelry. The contents flow well from subject to subject. Photographs, illustrations, and drawings are positioned with written content making this a rare contribution to the vast field of the history of jewelry. Whether a novice or an expert, this book will prove to be a valuable resource. There are a few versions of this book so make sure you purchase the latest edition.
I haven't really looked through this book, entirely, but what I see, is great.
For the price, this is a great visual guide. It does not cover cheaper costume jewelry but the pictures from the different eras and information on identification makes up for that. There is a limited section on identifying various jewelry marks (hallmarks) but you can find that info on-line.
Love this book. Lots of good descriptions and detailed pictures.
With some wonderful color photos you can see what old jewelry has to offer, being old does not mean being boring by far, this book gives some fair amounts jewelry that you may have sitting in some box. The question and answers help the new and old collectors alike
Beautiful pictures with lots of history and examples. Book is published in 2008 making the prices way out of date. This is the only down side. Otherwise, it is the kind of book you could spend days just looking through...after you read the history of styles, stones, metals, etc. LOVE IT! IF you enjoy jewelry, you'll want this book too! ;)
It's a beautiful book. I learned more history and Fashion than jewelry companies and jewelry patternsbut it is done beautifully. I will need to look for more of a catalog of companies and products
