"The Brazilian Sound" is THE book on Brazilian popular music, valuable to both neophytes and aficionados of the magnificent music of Brazil. Arguably the world's most musical nation, where music is the very fabric of life, Brazil influences musical styles worldwide. This book is thorough yet concise, with tons of photos, a priceless primer as you explore the genres and legendary musicians in the land of samba, bossa, chorinho, frevo, axe, and on and on. I have both the earlier softcover edition (heavily underlined and annotated) and the newer Kindle edition. I use them as references for a Brazilian music program that I cohost on a Pittsburgh station. We refer to this little book as "the Bible."

Helps place current and past musicians in their historical contexts; helps you understand who influenced whom, etc. The book will pay for itself just by helping you guide your ever-growing collection of Brazilian CD's (hard to stop once you get started)!
The Brazilian Sound is good as far as it goes - a who's who list and discography of 20th century Brazilian music. Although, the book has the feel of a junior college textbook, it's written in plain language. It would be a relatively easy read if it were not that a parenthetical list of Brazilian names breaks up every third or fourth paragraph. There are some very informative passages - notably the chapter on Bossa Nova and the "Escolas de Samba" section of Chapter 2. At their best, the authors provide clear and comphrensive explanations of the geneology and sociological context of the music.Unfortunately, unless a person is willing to spend countless shopping hours and a couple of thousand dollars building up collection of Brazilian records, he or she will gain almost no insight from this book into what the music feels like. The authors describe individual works and artists in only vague terms - terms often identical to those previously used to describe others. They beat the term "syncopation" into irrelevance - it's clear only that all Brazilian music is syncopated. The authors habitually refer to folk music genres and song forms ala "Composer X's work is all based on the Y song form..." But they provide no practical examples or definitions of those genres or forms.The authors stridently dumb-down their text, accepting as axiom that one has to "hear it to believe it" and that it is meaningless to describe Brazilian music in technical terms. They generally refrain from even using common musical terms - bar, measure, pulse, key, etc. - to give the reader a clearer understanding of Brazilian rhythmic and harmonic structures. They use few effective musical comparisons or verbal metaphors. It is understandably difficult to describe music in writing. But it is possible. Judicious use of metaphor, comparisions, and technical descriptions would have greatly fleshed out what in the end comes off as a skeletal text.This 1998 edition serves as the update to the first, apparently published in 1990 or 1991. However, the amendments appear to have been quite minor - embodied by an isolated paragraph here and there, and four meager pages in the final "More Brazilian Sounds" chapter. It's as if nothing has really happened in the evolution of Brazilian music since 1990 - an impression that must be wrong.The Brazilian Sound catalogs decent research, but is neither good writing nor effective music history.
This is a very good book to have but it reads more like a dictionary so I use it only for reference. Also it should have an appendix with the lyrics of songs discussed in English. Students find the book a problem because of the two points above..
You could fill a book with all the information I _don't_ know about Brazilian music... In fact, these guys already have! Concise, conversational, informative and very well laid out, this is an exceptionally readable book. Chapters on samba, bossa nova, tropicalia, forro and jazz include focused biographical sketches of dozens of key artists, as well as succinct historical information about the progress of Brazilian music from its European and African folk roots into its bewildering and often beautiful modern offshoots. The book's focus is nonpartisan: although there is plenty of room for aesthetic criticism within the various styles, the authors generally hold their preferences and dislikes to themselves. They do, however, give readers a good sense of which recordings might be best to check out -- an invaluable service considering how little of Brazil's vast musical output makes it to the United States. Highly recommended! Certainly the best English-language guide to Brazilian pop that you will find in print (online is a different matter), this is great for casual listeners and hardcore fans alike.
For anyone with an interest in Brazilian culture and/or music or who needs an immediate upgrade in their musical life, this book is an absolute must. It will introduce you to a host of some of the planet's best musicians and performers, most unknown north of the Amazon. The rhythms, styles and currents of Brazilian music are as diverse as any place in the world, and "The Brazilian Sound" details the origins and practices of the gamut, from bossa nova and samba, to forro, maracatu, axe, frevo, and pagode, the popular wing of samba. The 2009 edition is the best yet, expanding coverage of the pagode scene (one of my favorites) with great anecdotes and details on the Old Guard singers and modern stars like Zeca Pagodinho, and profiles of the seemingly endless crop of stellar female artists--Joyce, Marisa Monte, Vanessa da Mata, Bebel, Adriana Calcanhotta, Maria Rita. With artist interviews, great lyric excerpts (in English), details on the musical instruments (cuica to surdo to cavaquinho), coverage of all the regional musics and on-scene photos, this labor of love really does have everything you want to know about Brazilian music, which is a lot. I'm a longtime Brazilian music nut who learned a lot from this superb new edition.

The pictures are beautiful! I just wish that they were printed on 60# paper and that the pages were serrated for easy removal from the book, so they don't get torn:)
I had never attempted grayscale coloring in the past. Since this was the first grayscale book I'd ever purchased, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was amazed at how easy it is to use and at the end result of the first picture I attempted in it. The pages are printed single-sided; the paper is thinner than in some books, but it's adequate for pencil coloring.
If you have "dabbled" in adult coloring media, this is a step upward. If you have some sense of artistry, this is enjoyable. A major key in using grayscale coloring is to use a recommended method of blending color (such as a skin tone) using Petroleum Jelly. Use a tiny dab of jelly on the tip of your pencil (should be soft pencil) and it will allow you to spread the color evenly. The results are amazing compared to typical adult coloring books, and gives you a whole different set of options to your coloring. I've had some art training years ago, and when using the typical adult coloring books, they're fun, but really resemble the old coloring books I used growing up. There is technique involved here, but if you take your time you can create some amazing results. If you're just into coloring for fun, the regular books are great. Grayscale is a step up, but worth the effort, and is fun to experiment and produce some fantastic results. I liked the content of the pictures, but it felt like a photocopies of a actual photos. I'm not skilled enough to colour without defined lines I guess. I sent mine back.
Paper quality lacking for water color pencils.
This book has beautiful pictures however they have lines in them and they aren't very clear to see the book also came with a little bit of bending to the back as if someone was flipping through the pages.
This is a different type of coloring book. It has black and white pictures of which you add the color. (more or less as a hightlighting) Will be tricky for me to learn in order to have the pictures appear normal but worth a challenge.
It is a good concept, but I was disappointed in the quality of the grayscale photographs and the paper. The grayscale is so dark that I'm not sure the coloring of the pictures will be very satisfying - certainly not to be compared to the cover reproduction.
I have not used this until recently because was intimidated by the pictures on front and back of booklet. Once I decided I didn’t have to make my pictures identical to the covers, I found this type of coloring to be very enjoyable— pictures develop quickly and beautifully.

I cannot recommend this book enough!At 600+ pages Libido Dominandi: Sexual Liberation and Political Control is something of a tome but well worth the read. If it were not well written, the subject matter alone would be enough to lead one from first to last page. But the book is very well-written, the style engaging enough to carry the reader through the material briskly.Libido Dominandi is essentially a history book. It is the history of an idea: sexual liberation as a means to power. ‘It is not a new idea,’ says its author, E. Michael Jones. ‘[The idea] lies at the heart of the story of Samson and Delilah. The idea that sin was a form of slavery is central to the writings of Saint Paul. Saint Augustine, in his magnum opus… divided the world into two cities, the City of God, which loves God to the extinction of self, and the City of Man, which loves self to the extinction of God. Augustine describes the City of Man as “lusting to dominate the world†but at the same time “itself dominated by its passion for dominion.†Libido Dominandi, [this] passion for dominion, then, is a paradoxical project, practiced invariably by people who are themselves in thrall to the same passions they incite in others to dominate them.While Mr. Jones can see this idea playing out in the Samson and Delilah story and ancient Israel’s frequent falling for the orgiastic cults of its day, Libido Dominandi relates the story of this vicious idea’s modern history. He begins his detailed account of the sexual liberation movement’s ebb and flow throughout history with the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773 and traces its’ every twisted turn and monstrous morphing to the present day. As a professional novelist who prides himself on careful research, I cannot sufficiently congratulate Dr. Jones on the meticulous construction and lyrical prose which I found throughout Libido Dominandi.This is an important work. I have studied history, politics and cultural affairs for decades, and I can honestly state that I have never encountered a more nuanced and thoughtful analysis of the collapse of morality in the western world, let alone how that collapse was engineered to result in the silken yoke which all of us find ourselves dwelling under today.While this is a thoroughly enjoyable book, it feel it important to restate that this is a serious, academically-rigorous work, thoroughly evidenced, so one need not fear that they are sacrificing quality for enjoyment. Dr. Jones is a peerless thinker, and I am going to risk the wrath of my wife in purchasing the rest of his books this very day.
I admit that I am a fan of Jones, but he writes the way he speaks -- tangents, skew lines, and turgid digressions abound .This TOME is about 250 pages longer than it needed to be. But I still recommend it.

It's especially scalding concerning the terribly flawed, and politically and sexually perverted "science" behind the highly influential Kinsey Reports of 1948 and 1953.
