Well researched book on actor George Brent - a frequent co-star of Bette Davis - and one that the actresses liked as he would not overwhelm their roles as a Clark Gable would. Brent had a most interesting life but was somewhat reclusive. The author did a lot of work in tracking down Brent's Irish roots and family history. He also interviewed those who worked with Brent as well as Brent's daughter and a nephew. The book was full of great photographs and provided an extensive listing of all of Brent's work including film, television, and radio. I would highly recommend this to classic film fans. My only reason for 4 stars is I felt the author did not complete the book in that we really know nothing of what Brent's children and grandchildren are doing and I would have liked to have known that.

These tags have all been assigned to film actor George Brent who's sketchy biography seems like a press agent's dream or desperate attempt to provide a biography for someone who was notoriously private. When it came to revealing much about himself, Brent really didn't say much. Curiously, even four of his wives who were actresses, didn't say much. Not surprisingly with the exception of a union to a non-professional which lasted twenty-six years and ended in death, his other marriages were of short duration from two weeks to three years. Clearly author Scott O'Brien had his work cut out for him.Brent was active in film from 1931 to 1952. Prior to that, he was active in theater. After 1952, he worked predominantly in television with a few film appearances, but was also involved in horse breeding while providing his young family with a healthy lifestyle away from Hollywood.This is an impressive biography which works on a lot of levels. George Brent's real life story is interesting in its own right and the information extracted from a variety of reputable sources makes for an interesting tale. It covers Brent's rep as a ladies man, clears up details of a vague and confusing childhood, traces his early immigration to the U.S., a fractured family background, and views his film career in detail.One of the more interesting aspects of this book is how many of his films I have seen and the number of prominent leading ladies he acted with. Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyk, Claudette Colbert, Ginger Rogers......all sort of dazzling from a viewers perspective.The author has detailed Brent's filmography and provided a lot of anecdotal information while incorporating it chronologically in an clear and easy to read narrative.If you are a fan of Brent or interested in pre-code film, this is a book you should read.
I ordered this book on 9/12 and received it a few days later. I was unable to put it down until it I finished it. This is one of the best-written and well-researched books that I have ever read. George Brent is one of my favorite actors who had a complex, reclusive personality, so it was very interesting to understand more about that. I especially enjoyed the part of the book about his last wife and the mother of his children, Janet Michael, who truly was his soul mate. I am definitely going to purchase more of Scott O'Brien's biographies. What a wonderful author. It is also refreshing that he did not include rumors, just facts, and really appreciated seeing the photos. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in classic movie stars and movies, and of course George Brent! I am so glad I purchased this book!
Scott O'Brien does another fine job with his extensive and heartfelt research on Mr. Brent. George Brent is often overlooked but those of us who appreciate his work are thrilled to hear about his life and loves. Scott O'Brien fills in the gaps and tells us the story of a handsome actor who was never recognized enough. From his films to his wives, we are enchanted with this bio. Bravo.

After finishing the book a few nights ago, I’m still unsure as to what to think of it. There were parts of Friesner’s novel that I enjoyed and then there were parts where I just kept reading because I knew I had to write this review. One of the reasons why I think I’m blasé about the novel is because the novel I read before this one left a mark on my heart, had me mourning that the story was over. With Spirit’s Chosen, I put the book down and finished cooking dinner. No sadness, no missing of characters or Friesner’s world, just done with the book, ready for the next.As I thought about my ambivalence, I asked myself what caused this feeling? Was it the characters? Was it the world? Was it the style of prose Friesner use? What it the story? What?And then I realized, there were two main aspects of this novel that rubbed me the wrong way and the main one is the main character, Himiko. Now, I’m pleased that Friesner chose to write a character of color, specifically of Japanese descent, and set the novel in a historical time period. On the other hand, Himiko annoyed me a bit because she is a bit of a Mary-Sue. She is a like-able character and the reader wants to root for her to succeed, but she doesn’t have any faults. None what so ever. She always is able to maintain a positive attitude despite what is thrown at her and is always able to come up with the proper solution that succeeds every time. In fact, at one point when she experiences an obstacle and starts to finally have a breakdown, after she tells Daimu (her love interest) why she is upset, she ends up comforting him! I was completely taken out of the story at that point because it was so unrealistic. I realize that Friesner is trying to promote a strong female character, a warrior, but for a reader to connect, to really believe in the character, she must exhibit some faults or else the reader doesn’t truly trust the main character. I feel like Friesner got so caught up in her sweeping historical fiction with a strong female character that she forgot to give her character, and others, more depth.Spirit’s Chosen is a sequel to Friesner’s Spirit’s Princess but the way she structures the novel allows one to read this novel without having read the first. Friesner gives tidbits here and there of relevant information, as needed, from the first novel and it doesn’t overwhelm Spirit’s Chosen. Friesner definitely did her history, and visited Japan which she writes about in her afterward, and this level of attention and detail comes across beautifully. The world that Friesner creates is very real and believable, and is what makes the novel somewhat interesting.Recommendation: If you like epic historical fiction with balanced characters, I’d say skip this one, but if not and you just love historical fiction for the romance of another era, then this one is for you.Original review posted on the blog [...]
I'm in college and I have yet to be disappointed by Friesner. She brings a nice touch on historical fictions. While I've read some pretty good YA books lately, I'd been a little disappointed that I couldn't pass them on to my younger sister/cousin due to the inappropriateness. Some books really are meant for teens a little bit older for various reasons, but I've found that Friesner has made different stories quite appropriate for all ages. If you love history/mythology, you should enjoy her books as much as I have. The first book for Himiko lacked only a little, but she really makes up for it with the Sprit's Chosen. I'm curious who the next historical princess will be.
Esther Friesner's books never dissapoint me. I love historical fiction and all of her books are amazing! I appreciate her story telling techniques and I can never put the books down. After the first book, I was dying to get a hold of this one because it was just such a cliff hanger! But this book was definitely worth the wait. I hope she comes out with another book soon! And if you loved this book, you should definitely check out the rest of the books in the Princesses of Myth series!
As a huge lover of Japanese culture I was rather excited to read this book. There are some inaccuracies, but otherwise the actual story itself is decent.
I liked it because it was interesting an there wasn't anything that didn't make sense. I've read some books that didn't make sense but I understood them later but I understood what happened throughout the whole books

The book was very well written and enjoyed it very much, but I did not like the ending so much because of all the bad events that happened. But I did not waste my time reading it!
Slow, slow opening. Coming home to find the clan has been enslaved - but there aren't any captors around. Life goes on as usual, except with a lot of dead young men and very little food. But we get through winter OK, no one actually dies of hunger.Then Hikimo goes off on her quest to save Baby Brother. Not everyone else - she's just a young girl, she can't save everyone by herself - but Her own brother is special. Hikimo's best friend goes off with her, because Hikimo can't fight her way out of a paper bag. She can lie, though. And she can be a good shaman and heal people.Then she gets captured. And the prison guard wants to rape her. Then she gets taken to the house of the chieftain who wanted to marry her (until she slopped garbage over him) and he has no interest in sleeping with her. Even though he treats his own wife like garbage. Whuh? How did that happen?Then she goes to the shrine, where the shaman falls in love with her, and takes no steps to ensure she loves him back. The other shaman courts her as if she were a free woman, as well.The chieftain's bitchy mother falls in love with Hikimo when the baby-boy she predicted came true. Everyone Loves Hikimo! Except for the chieftan. And even he comes around later, which is even harder for me to believe than the shaman's not 'insisting' that the slave-girl indulge his true love.Moderately good book, not as good as her other series.

The premise put forth in the title is supported by some keen insights into "leadership by Calling" and comparisons to it with "modern leadership theory." Les Csorba writes about the danger of pursuing results without compassion; a point with which I agree. Unfortunately, some of the examples he chooses are questionable...After warning about the danger of weak character in powerful leaders, Csorba chastises German Chancellor Schroeder for turning back on some promises to George W Bush regarding the war on terrorism and then goes on to deride him for his four wives. Meanwhile he praises Jack Welch for going from Neutron Jack to a gentler Jack (which Jack says he would abandon if needed)while still making the "tough" decisions that got the "results" for the shareholders. Jack can change is mind and go back to compassionless results... OK. Also, there is no mention that Jack was getting results with his personal secretary whilst the wife was at home...Unfortunately the theme in Csorba's examples becomes one of bashing the mistakes of Democrats and forgiving the sins of the Republicans. He does sprinkle in some condemnation for a few wrong-minded Republicans in a meek attempt at balance. It's a shame that he turned this into a politcally tainted work. It started off so well.It started off well even though it will turn off readers who are not people of faith as faith is central precept to this book. It also started off well even though he chose to make George W Bush the role model for how to be a trust-able leader. Unfortunately this conservative/political bent turned an even harder right from there and kept going. It kept going to the point that I could no longer plan on sharing this book with some folks I know who really need it. They would simply say its a Bush-ie/right-winger book and dismiss the valuable and otherwise soundly argued premise. Too bad. Csorba almost had a classic instead of a politically tainted leadership manual.I say this even though I am Republican, am one of the few folks who would admit they were voting for Bush BEFORE the election, am a person of faith, and tend to find the Dems an easy target. But this book was supposed to be about so much more than Republican politics. Too bad.
This author, Les T. Csorba, is a Christian, served in the first Bush Administration, and knows what he's talking about. He says that true leaders are driven by a vision larger than themselves and the applause they might receive. As the book's title implies, Csorba thinks untrustworthy leadership is or should be an oxymoron.My favorite quote from this book is: "The `best and the brightest' only become the best when they are the modest and the moral as well." Csorba includes plenty of contemporary examples of leaders who failed the public trust, not only in politics, but in religion and business as well.This book is well documented and worthy of anyone's time who cares to learn more about leadership. I enjoyed and recommend it.

I love this book!! I learned to weave from Rachel's tutorials on A Beautiful Mess and have completely fallen in love with it, there is a large variety of tutorials and fun patterns in this book that have definitely kept me interested and busy. There's a lot of great information for beginners but there is also a lot of new tips, patterns, stitches, etc. that will keep intermediate/advanced weavers interested and inspired. Rachel also advances past wall hangings and has some patterns for functional pieces as well (a rug, clutch, table runner...) that are so so beautiful and have inspired me to take weaving even further than just small wall hangings, as well as tons of sources for yarn and materials. This book is so worth it and I really can't think of anything bad to say!
This is the book I've been looking for! I took an introduction to tapestry weaving class earlier this year and have been looking for a book of modern tapestry weaving to further my education. I found a few vintage booklets with some interesting projects, but most of the recent weaving instruction books I found only had one or two tapestries and were short on technique. This book has page after page of beautiful modern wall hangings with various stitches and knots, as well as a few other home decor items. The photos are beautiful (my page pics below don't do them justice) and the stitches and techniques are very clear, particularly given the numerous closeup step-by-step images included with each project. I had never heard of Rachel Denbow before, and am so glad her book popped up in my "customers who bought this also bought" list!
Yayyyy finally a book written with the beginner in mind. I absolutely love this book cover to cover. The pictures are great, the instructions clear, the large variety of techniques are explained well; it is perfect. I should have purchased this book first, but unfortunately I waited for the release of another weaving book that just fell way short of what I thought it was going to be. This is the type of book I wanted. I love that the author lists her suppliers of tools and yarns and even how to construct your own loom rather than running out to buy one. Basically you can get started immediately after getting this book with very few supplies needed. Awesome job Rachel! You deserve all the positive reviews for this book. It was well thought out and very well written. Amazing! Even intermediate weavers would love this book! 11 wall weavings in total for you to draw inspiration from! Cannot wait to get started!
This is one of my favorite craft books of all time, and I have A LOT in many different techniques. This book was such a joy to go through. Each project built on the last one so that you felt like you were learning new things and didn't get bored. I even loved the color choices. I normally skim books like these, maybe try out a few projects, or just use it for inspiration, but not this one. It's a beautiful book with beautiful projects and lots of stuff to learn. I have other books on weaving and none come close to how great this one is.
I'm super happy with this book. There are 15 projects and they're all so different that you pick up on a lot of techniques with different materials to make whatever you can imagine. I am grateful for the reference to lots of different images, too. It's hard to learn via text, but Rachel directs you to images that show you exactly what she's talking about. Lovely, and pretty and informative and I'm excited to weave some more!
I bought this in the Fall of 2016 and it has been such a great addition to my crafting! It introduced me to weaving with excellent descriptions of each step of the process and pictures, lots and lots of pictures, which this visual learner LOVES. Rachel has done a great job passing along to others her love of creating and gives you space to make the design your own while inserting handy tips and tricks. I've been able to make and give several weavings to friends to decorate their nurseries and homes and I'm so glad I stumbled across the SmileandWeave IG account. If you've been thinking about picking up weaving - go get this book now!
I have really enjoyed this book and the new creative outlet it has opened to me. DIY Woven Art is great for a beginner, like myself, with friendly, clear instruction, wonderful photos, and lots of information on materials for starting out. The projects are beautiful,fun, and inspired me to keep going with larger pieces. While visiting my elderly mother with late stage dementia recently, I made a small loom from an old box lid, (instructions from this book) and together, we made a tiny weaving. We used bright colors that would be easy for her to see. I would weave a row and she would press the yarn down with a large needle or her finger. She doesn't speak much anymore, but she loved to sew and crochet all her life, and it was wonderful to find a way to engage her, even if just for a few minutes at a time, making something together. I am so happy to have come across this book!
I purchased this book after being a fan of Rachel's for years and drooling over her beautiful woven masterpieces. I then took a class from Ms. Denbow where I grew my skills and love for the finished product. If you are on the fence about whether or not you can gain what you need to know to begin weaving, you must grab this book now! Rachel's tips and step-by-step instructions are fantastic and I have finished many gorgeous weavings that I have gifted. There are many projects in the book and all of them are absolutely doable with the easy to understand instructions. I enjoy following Rachel's fiber journey and am happy so she put out such a fabulous book on a topic that was so hard to find information on previous to it's release. James A. Michener was one of the world’s most popular writers, the author of more than forty books of fiction and nonfiction, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Tales of the South Pacific, the bestselling novels The Source, Hawaii, Alaska, Chesapeake, Centennial, Texas, Caribbean, and Caravans, and the memoir The World Is My Home. I love James Michener's writing and am going to Spain in spring so wanted some insight into Spanish culture. First, the book was written in 1968 during Franco's last year's as dictator so some of Michener's views are now dated. Starting in the most remote, under-populated portion of Spain put me off from reading the rest of the book. But several weeks later, I picked it up and tried again and found his deep knowledge of the culture, people, food and life of Spain to be fascinating (once he got past Extremadura). I have read a few current guidebooks and a history of Spain, but this was by far, the book that gave me a real sense of Spain and what I should look for when we travel there. There is a wonderful chapter on Barcelona and Catalonia which gave me a deeper understanding of the current situation between Catalonia and Madrid. I would have given it 5 stars except for that awful first chapter and the last chapter that was all about bullfighting, the bulls, the matadors ad nauseum. If you're into bullfighting, this is the chapter for you, otherwise just skip over it like I did.
I read this during a recent trip to Spain to get away from the craziness here. His tales were a lovely addition to the trip, and although over 50 years old, amazingly relevant to current events. Michener was fascinated by Spanish history in that they had literally boatloads of gold coming to them, but they became quite backwards for a very long time. They used all the wealth in a quest to "defend the faith" rather than invest in needed agriculture, and expelled endless Jews and Moors who contributed expertise, to purify the country. That, along with inept and sometimesderanged rulers, was enough to overwhelm all the advantages they started out with.There are also a lot of personal anecdotes and adventures that help to decide where to go and to appreciate what you see.
A brilliant book, endlessly fascinating and including immensely varied perspectives on everything concerning Spain. It is not a travelogue, but an analysis of the Spanish people, their way of life, their psychology, their history, art, music, etc., etc. Basing himself in a number of different cities, many of them small cities that are not often featured in books on Spain. But through his conversations with people in all these places, he gains insights into all aspects of Spanish life. Michener's acquainance with the country is old and intimate, and he is deeply knowledgeable about Spanish art, music, literature, drama, the bullfight, and discusses all these topics, and many more, not in a lengthy, well-ordered and complete study of the subject, but as each topic is suggested by events, conversations, buildings, paintings, music, and other "encounters" he has during his many visits to Spain. The writer's style is magnificent, simple and unaffected, but inspiringly lyrical when he turns to topics that he loves particularly, art, music, birds, the bulls, etc.A deeply satisfying book and one that the lover of Spain will want to return to time and again.
Unlike his historical novels (Hawaii etc) that I read 40 or so years ago, I was thrilled that this was a memoir. I'm planning to visit Spain next year. Michener created a masterpiece by combining multiple trips into stories organized by area/region. The depth and breadth of his knowledge of history, art, literature, architecture etc is amazing. He hooked up with a photographer and the combination of narrative and pictures is outstanding.
I lived for a while in Spain. I was overwhelmed with a sense of the pageantry of history. Greeks and Romans, medieval conquerors, biblical characters and monarchs had trod this very ground. However I travelled mostly in blind awe. It was then that I chanced upon an American edition of Michener's Iberia in a small magazine and book stall. Iberia covers it all in encyclopedic detail. It's dated now [1966] and Spain sadly has been wrenched into Starbucks sameness. But the ancient footprints remain. You need fore knowledge. You might want to take this book with you if you plan an Iberian visit. Michener is awesomely experienced in art, history and global politics. He is an entertaining story teller too. P.S. Spain is 3/4th. the size of Texas but with a vastly more long and complicated history in comparison to size. Michener does a pretty good job in describing Texas in his book Texas. That fellow sure got around [1907-1997.]
James Michener's Iberia: Spanish Travels and Reflections chronicles the author's travels in Spain and his long-term love affair with all things Spanish. Published in 1968, the text is of course dated. Iberia has chapters on Badajoz, Toldeo, Cordoba, Las Marismas, Sevilla, Madrid, Salamanca, Pamplona, Barcelona, Teruel, Santiago de Compostela, and Bull fighting.Michener devoted parts of several chapters, and one complete chapter, to bull fighting. He was a passionate aficionado of bullfights, even though the vast majority of the bull fights he saw were profoundly disappointing.Michener is known for his long, rather slow, books and this one is nearly 800 pages of reminiscences. He can take many pages to describe hardly anything, but the reader hardly cares as the writing is so good. Readers interested in Michener's three pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela will be disappointed by the lack of detail about those trips.The 1968 hardback edition features photographs by Robert Vavra, a friend of Michener. They are black and white and rather self-consciously "artistic."
The original publication of Iberia was 1968 and I read it then as I was a fan of Michener. I enjoyed it then but even more so the second time I read it in 2017 as I had just come back from a trip to Spain and Portugal. Iberia is a travel diary by Michener who was a very curious traveler and found many interesting people to chat with and many interesting places to visit while in Spain. I recommend it to anyone who has a particular interest in or is traveling to Spain.

Amber gives a gripping account of her path to true family. When I read the things her parents told her about her sexuality I would often hear my own:"I know you think you know what's best for you, but I've lived a lot longer than you and can tell you this won't end well.""If you ever have a girlfriend she will never be allowed in our house.""It's extremely selfish of you to do something that makes you happy without thinking about how it affects the family."The irony of the last quote is that Amber spends the entire book thinking about her family. They would not ask a straight child to sacrifice their happiness. They may be upset if they did not follow a more exact blueprint, but it would not be with the same severity. In Evangelicalism marriage covers a multitude of sins-- unless you're gay.This was all exasperated with her father's senior position in a ministry that regularly degrades LGBT people and champions a nuclear version of family that is becoming less and less accessible for a number of reasons. It left Amber radioactive as her future changed once she came out.I haven't met many Christians who know what gaslighting is, but anti-LGBT Christendom is really good at it. Half the battle is sifting through it. We are less successful and burdened down with shame because of propaganda machines like Focus on the Family.The only virtue of the ordeal for myself was knowing if I still held onto my Christian faith after all this, then I know it is truly mine. Amber is one of those too.Read this book and consider the lives of gay Christians and the kind of shrapnel homophobic attitudes may leave inside us. If it is in your power at all, make space for LGBT people in your life, known and unknown, Christian or not, it will save lives.
In the last chapter of Amber's courageous memoir, she relays a conversation she had with a pastor, asking for advice as she was thinking through making her story public. This pastor's thoughtful response is what compelled Amber, and compels so many of us who support Amber and others in the LGBT community, to share our stories: " Embedded in your identity is a responsibility to be a voice for change." Once we know, once we "get" it, once we've been transformed by our experiences, we are now responsible to speak what we know. Amber's honesty is, at times, disarming, but it is that kind of truth-telling that moves hearts and changes lives."Refocusing My Family" is a kind of death-and-resurrection story. Amber realizes the truth of who she is and must come to terms with that by letting go of the woman that she was raised to be: Heterosexual. Her coming out story - the one where her parents cast her out of their lives unless she "repents" and walks away from a "gay lifestyle" - wrenched my heart. Yet embedded in all her pain was a seed of hope, thanks to the warm embrace of the folks at Highlands Church in Denver and the skilled counseling of her therapist. That hope fuels Amber's desire to live authentically with the knowledge that she's God's beloved today just as she was before she realized she was gay. Fortunately, she has the perfect partner to walk the rest of this journey with her, and that's her wife, Clara. I wish them much happiness and pray that anyone reading this review would pick up a copy of this gem of a book and risk having your heart changed for the better.
I bought this book for my Kindle last night and finished reading it this morning. Amber, thank you so much for sharing your life in print. I come from a fundamentalist Christian background. Thankfully many have become more open and accepting but not all have. Our son is gay and we have received open criticism for out support of him from some in the Christian community. When I was at a pride festival last year, I saw a young woman with a sign that read "Most important thing I learned at bible college was Love is Greater than Dogma". Happy to hear Amber has found love and is establishing her own family.
O my, how I appreciate Amber sharing her story. I'm 68 and straight, but I've had my own closets to come out of, and daring to live an authentic life, in spite of what religion tells us, takes a lot of courage. Raised as an Evangelical fundamentalist, and having a daddy who was a Southern Baptist preacher (and also my hero), I came into my own very late in life (mid-50's). It's painful to have all your beliefs challenged. Doubt pretty much became my faith story. One of my biggest challenges was regarding the LGBTQ community. Today I call myself an ally, and some of my best friends are gay, but even I have lost family and friends along the way over this issue. Thank you Amber for having the guts to live your life.
