I've read the entire Sharpe series, the Archer series and the Grail Quest series, along with this one. I've thoroughly enjoyed them all. For what it's worth, the main character in each of these stories seems to me to be pretty much the same person. That's not unusual in fiction. For example, in Robert Heinlein's works, the protagonist in all of his stories strikes me to be the same person as well. That being said, there's not a great deal of character development, per se, but the protagonists are easy to like and the antagonists are easy to despise. Merlin is a little hard to figure out as you're never really sure who's side he's on. As a matter of fact, at one point he even states that he's NOT ON ANYBODY'S side and that he has his own agenda and everyone else in England is just playing a role as far as he's concerned. Still, if you like historical fiction or you're looking for a story that will totally consume you for a week or two, go with Bernard Cornwell. You won't be disappointed.
This is the second in the Arthurian trilogy as written by Bernard Cornwell. This is a must read for anyone interested in Arthurian lore; it is quite possibly the best rendition of Arthur I've ever read, and I've read more than a few sagas featuring Arthur. Most people, when they think of Arthur will either reference the Chretien de Troyes work (which did serve to revitalize interest in Arthur, and he took his inspiration from the older Welsh traditions) or the John Boorman movie, Excalibur, which was partially based on de Troyes' work. I read de Troyes' work as a kid, and then years later as an adult, I picked up a more literal translation. If I could sum that up in one word, it'd be "flowery". Small wonder that the concept of chivalry should be born from it as it tells tales of impossible feats by impossibly courteous and solicitous men who are also trained killers. Still, since the age of ten I've always wanted to be a knight and who better than a knight of the Table Round?Anyhow, as I've gotten older, my taste in literature has made a predictable curve toward more realistic fare- that is not to say that I do not love fantasy because I do- whether it is in games, movies or books, but I appreciate books (and the authors who wrote them) that at least make the attempt to tell the story from a more realistic point of view. Arthur, and his warriors, as depicted here are not the paragons of virtue as described in the aforementioned book and movie. These men are much more realistic; at times plagued by doubt and fear, they live, they love and they make war but it is the way that they do it that grabs the reader. There are no stock characters here save one, and even that one has realistic motivations and sensibilities, albeit of the bad variety.The trilogy is set during the beginning of the 5th century (which is not arbitrary as there has been some evidence and loads of conjecture about a time in history that Arthur might have existed in; some scholars argue that he was a Romano-Brit cavalry officer with a foot in both camps. I happen to like that assertion as it makes a sort of sense to me as there is absolutely no record of Arthur in 12th century England (or Wales where the tales first originated) and certainly not in any later period as the film would suggest (with the use of full plate harness armor which would not become the norm until the 15th century). This Arthur is a seemingly-simple character, slow to anger, quick to laugh; commands the respect of his troops and any soldiers who first meet him. He is also a consummate warrior and leader, but anyone familiar with Arthur already knows that. So what sets this book apart, besides the referential timeline? The supporting cast. One of the things that I look for in a book is how strong are the other characters- are they stock, two dimensional, essentially blah? If that's the case, I'll still read, but I probably won't enjoy it as much. So not the case here; the book is written from the perspective of a displaced Saxon youth who will eventually prove himself worthy of Arthur. In addition to a strong supporting (well written) cast, Cornwell's depictions of battle are truly worth reading, then re-reading to absorb all of the layers he gives you. Most books of this genre will feature battles, and usually there's one or another hero who is focused on but even then, you don't get the impression of actual battle. You read it, you process it mentally, then you move onto the next portion of the story. Cornwell gets down to the nitty gritty; the horror of the shield wall, where heros are made, but even more are killed. When the shieldwalls of opposing armies meet, it is a loud reverberating clash, followed by the ring of metal weapons on wooden and leather shields, metal helmets and armor, the smell of the warrior across from you trying his damnedest to kill you while you return the favor as strongly as you might. His breath, mead-soaked (since it takes a lot of courage to charge a shield wall, most warriors prefer to do so after getting drunk) and rank, the stench comes off in waves from the unwashed bodies of everyone around you- including and not limited to the smells of urine and feces for those who couldn't hold their water or their bowels. Blood...blood everywhere; no one's clean after a battle. The heroes, the great slaughterers are usually covered in it from head to toe! Ok, I won't give anymore of the story away - suffice it to say, all three books are superbly written, I've read them multiple times and in fact, I've just finished reading the trilogy and that prompted me to revisit the Saxon Tales saga, written by the same author.
Cornwell continues the story of Arthur in this second book of The Warlord Chronicles. This is certainly a unique view of Arthur's story as opposed to the legends of Camelot normally available. I expect Cornwell captures a more realistic view of early England, and it shares similarities with other medieval period stories. I was uncertain about the story being narrated by one of the characters (later in life); however, it is well done and I enjoy the brief glimpses of the narrator's present time when writing the story. I would warn the story is more about the life of Derfel, friend and servant of Arthur's. Derfel's character is more fully developed than Arthur's. Nonetheless I have enjoyed both books and just started the third and last.
The Warlord Chronicles is Bernard Cornwell's interpretation of the story of King Arthur. The trilogy is comprised of The Winter King, Enemy of God, and Excalibur and is told from the perspective of Derfel Cardan, a man that Britain's greatest druid Merlin plucked as a child from a death pit to become Arthur's most trusted warrior.Cornwell's is not the romanticized version of Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur or T.H. His grandson, Mordred, is his heir; however, Mordred is only a baby. Arthur, a bastard of Uther, takes an oath of loyalty to Mordred and is chosen as Mordred's guardian. Until Mordred is old enough to rule Dumnonia himself, Arthur is effectively the king.Arthur dreams to unite the various kingdoms of Britain and push out the invading land-hungry Saxons. This is the story of Arthur. Over and over again, just when you think that Arthur's dream is to become a reality, the dream is shattered due to his own weaknesses, his sense of justice, the machinations of kings and those closest to him, the conflict between Christians and pagans, or most often his oath of loyalty to Mordred. Certainly, for a moment there is Camelot, but even then dark clouds are on the horizon.I highly recommend these books. As usual, Cornwell excels at describing the battles and the single combats. His take on characters is refreshing. For example, Lancelot is considered the greatest warrior in the land, not because of any actual accomplishments, but because of his ability to control his image, manipulate others, and pay the bards to sing his high praises; in truth, he is a coward. I've read many versions of the Arthur story. While it is difficult to rate one version against another as they are often so different, this is one of the best.

Alan makes this truth come alive and invites us into a leadership and gospel of grace with the goal of abiding in God's presence, trusting the deeper, transforming work of the Spirit to result in fruitfulness for an abundant life that spills over in everything thought, done and said. It is a picture of a "Mary-Martha"! How contemplation and action are integrated with a pace that honors both our humaness and God's Divinity. A must read with simple practices for deep change for anyone that dares to live life with God and others in humble trust, dependency and joyful action. The practices and reflections in this book will continue to be used to open my heart, mind and life to God. Loved this book! As a hockey Mom, I cried and laughed throughout it. What an awesome story of triumph when faced with adversity. I even bought a second copy to lend out! (I want nt to make sure to keep my copy!) I highly recommend this, even if you aren’t into hockey.
Wow. This book is one that makes it difficult to put down. It’s an extremely well written account of the trauma and courage of an amazing young man. Such an inspiration and a “real†insight into the emotions and trials of becoming paralyzed especially at such a young age. I haven’t read a book in almost 8 years but I can tell you I finished this in 3 days. Must read!
“Line Change†encompasses fierce determination in the face of extraordinary challenges. Matt Brown is an inspiration. Never Quit is an apt mantra.
This book should be required reading at every school in the country. Matt's story is one that every young adult will gain great strength and learning is endless. I see summer reading with books that have no meaning and students read them to check off they read them. This book generates conversation. You are engaged and feel a part of Matt's journey from the beginning. Looking forward to his next chapter....or should I say chapterS.If you haven't picked this book up, highly encourage you do. If you haven't given it to your children (athletes or not) , I highly recommend you do. You won't regret it. I am not an avid reader and I got through it within a few days. One of those "can't stop turning the pages" books. Five Stars+.

Hockey is family. This book is an honest look at Matt’s injury and recovery from all the people closest to him. Matt is an inspiration and he truly is remarkable is how he chose to focus on the positive after his injury. I have this book for my own son’s to read as they are hockey players and I struggle to find things they will read without a fight. Through it all Matt encourages kids to continue to play the sport and focus on the positive. I admire Matt and his family and encourage everyone to read this book. There are so many messages to take from reading this book.
As a retired trauma nurse and mother of four children that played hockey for years, Line Change is a book that should be required high school reading! I loved the intimate portrait of life among family and friends that Matt shared with the reader. I also loved the chapters from those that know Matt closely that gave another look at life with Matt.Inspirational, personable, “Never Quit†attitude!
Received my copy of the book on Dec 12th and started reading right away! Two weeks and was finished, which is fast for me when it comes to reading.. I could not put it down! Whether you have the pleasure of knowing the Brown Family or not (which i have the pleasure of) this book will tear at your heart strings! The last major guide to the hidden "gem" that is Richmond was published in 1999 (also by Globe Pequot). It was well done, but hopelessly outdated by 2010. Local travel writer Maureen Egan has outdone herself with this new edition which while long (300+ pages) is completely readable, accurate, and packed with great recommendations. The restaurant, relocation, and festival chapters are worth the price of the book by themselves. Some of the details in those chapters prove that Egan has legitimately been to all of the places which she writes about. I also appreciate that the book includes a short but serious chapter on Richmond's history (not always found in travel guides!). All in all this is a great guide that is just as useful for longtime residents as it is for visitors and those relocating. Hats off to Egan for meeting so many diverse needs and bringing attention to a great city which deserves more of it!

This relatively short book is essentially a biography of U.S. Army Colonel Felix Sparks, who led an infantry unit in the Sicily, Italian, and southern French campaigns of World War II. Most accounts of the War in Europe focus upon the Normandy invasion and Battle of the Bulge, so this is a welcome addition, detailing the war effort of those that fought in Sicily, at Anzio, and through the south of France.Sparks certainly saw his share of battle and was never far from the front line, somewhat rare for officers of his rank. His unit saw some of the highest casualty rates of the War. Without a doubt, Sparks was one of the finest soldiers to wear the uniform and his record cannot be denied or diminished in any way. However, as frequently happens in the case of such biographies, the author has tried a little too hard to sell the Colonel’s story. In this instance, he does so by denigrating virtually every U. S. service man of higher rank than Sparks.Of course, the Generals are either bumbling fools (Mark Clark) or venal, publicity hounds (George Patton) whose negligence and incompetence put Sparks and his men repeatedly in harm’s way, despite the well-argued and indisputable warnings of Sparks. To believe the author, the War would have been won far quicker, with little loss of life, if only the higher ups had listened to Sparks. His immediate superiors likewise come in for their share of criticism as well, particularly Brigadier General Fredericks, who he blames for the sniper death of a soldier returning from a victory parade (as if the sniper would have otherwise been unable to find a target). He also blames the vindictiveness of Fredericks for Sparks’s failure to receive the recognition (as in medals) that he deserved. This despite the fact that Fredericks apparently smoothed over a little incident in which Sparks actually pulled a pistol and stuck it in a General’s face.Likewise, the author frequently uses a double standard, painting the Waffen SS as monsters for killing American prisoners, then essentially excusing U.S. service men (Sparks’s men) for doing the same, because you see, the American soldiers were emotionally upset, as though German soldiers were immune from such conditions.The writing style was not entirely to my liking, consisting of short, choppy paragraphs, much in the way of diary entries. The author also takes a number of gratuitous swipes at the NRA in a final chapter detailing Sparks’s subsequent gun control crusades. So, while the subject matter was appreciated, informative and educational, in my opinion the author detracts from the work through his hagiography and the method by which he presents the history.
I found "The Liberator" by Alex Kershaw to be a unique and excellent vehicle to learn about World War II. Kershaw follows one soldier, Felix Sparks from landing on Sicily, fighting through Sicily, then up the 'boot' of Italy, another landing in southern France, north through eastern France, crossing the Rhine River into Germany, fighting through Germany to Bavaria, and, most significantly, liberating the Dachau Concentration Camp. The most amazing fact to me is that Felix Sparks actually survived this ordeal. His unit took some of the worst casualties of any American army unit in the European Theater.The book details the horrors infantry troops endured in Europe and the amazing courage it took just to pick up the weapon each day and continue the fight. PTSD (post traumatic stress disease , known by various other terms (shell shock, etc.) in those days), took a tremendous tole. Despite it all, Sparks continued to show leadership and good judgment. He first landed in Sicily as a Lieutenant and company commander. At the end, he was a Lt. Colonel and Battalion commander. His men loved and trusted him and he returned the feelings. The section of the book dealing with the liberation of Dachau was particularly riveting and wrenching.I recommend this book.
The US Army traditionally has been an organization that celebrates elites: Rangers, Special Forces, Delta Force, and Airborne Infantry. But, in the end, it is the straight leg, uncelebrated infantry units who do the heavy lifting of battle. The 45th Infantry Division was one of those organizations in WWII. In over 500 days of combat it suffered unimaginable casualties, fighting its way across Sicily, up the leg of Italy, into France and Germany. It went across the beach in four D-Days, but received little credit or praise. Col. Felix Sparks demonstrated unparalleled courage and leadership in guiding and encouraging his men through the terrors of mine fields, artillery barrages, machine gun fire, and extreme weather conditions of heat, cold and rain. This book is very well written, but equally hard to read because of the description of terror and carnage inflected on these young Americans by a determined, fanatical enemy. Mr. Kershaw has done another tremendous job in writing this book. I recommend it to all.
Felix Sparks another unsung hero from WW2. He helped with the invasion of Italy and fought all the way into Germany. Along the way he liberated the Dachau concentration Camp. Here some of his men slaughtered the brutal SS that they captured. The aftermath had a full investigation into the conduct of those killing the SS. It eventually was squashed by Patton himself.The writer pulls no punches. He lets the reader know when a General messed up and how it affected the outcome of the battle. Felix Sparks is a true American Hero. Once you start reading it will be hard to put the book down.
If you have only one book to read about the soldiers in WWII, this is it. I have read many books about the Second World War, but this one captures the essence, the sacrifice, the heroism, the pain and,yes, the horror of war better than most. What sets this book apart is following the life of a true hero, Felix Sparks, from second lieutenant to brigadier general, through innumerable battles, wins and losses and gives a “you are there†quality of life during war. Written with care and thoughtfulness, this book is not to be missed.
I enjoyed the book as it followed the route my uncle took while in WWII. His division was alongside the author’s. I purchased it for my Dad and he enjoyed it as much as I since it was his brother. He, in turn, purchased it for my uncles’s son. Hearing how rough their lives were for several years was heartbreaking. It was awful for them to have to go through. It should make us appreciate our soldiers even more. They are true heroes.

I ordered this book to learn project finance. The author is clearly knowledgeable but, for whatever reason, he decided to just randomly jump back and forth between corporate and project financial modeling techniques making it very difficult to focus on one or the other. That might not be terrible by itself but he compounds the problem by referencing comparative differences between Corporate and Project modeling so you are basically forced to read everything to follow along. I had wrongly assumed there would be a section focused soley on PF modeling and I could ignore the other parts. Under what circumstances you'd be trying to learn both at the same time, or compare the two methodologies, is lost on me but maybe that just means I'm not the target audience. Additionally, he seems to just ramble on over the 500+ pages with little flow or actionable practice. I'm shocked his editor let this go out this way.I gave it 2-Stars instead of 1 because I could see this book being useful as a desk reference when already working on a model and attempting to solve a single issue, but as a guide for learning, I found it pretty useless. I will be returning it and searching for a more focused text.
A must read for all those who are into financial modeling. The book deals with all practical issues one faces while building financial models. I probably have all the books on Financial Modeling that are available in Amazon website. I will rate this book as one of the best. Most of the books on financial modeling talk about business valuation. One rarely finds a good book on project finance modeling (the Euromoney book is an exception). This book fills the void and in one book, you get the fundaments of both corporate and project finance modeling.In addition, the author describes some useful macros that will save lot of your time.
This book is great. Author gives a lot of inside tips that you would only learn on the job. Its an easy read and not too technical.I would suggest to watch the numerous youtube videos as well that are found on the authors site.
This is the most understandable and comprehensive resource available on the subject. I have been able to immediately implement many of the concepts into my business. Highly recommended.
This book goes on and on with just text. There is a website for related files but it is so messy and disorganized with a bunch of excel files which look like draft version. So it is impossible to figure out how you can perform what you read in the book. It seems the author has not bothered to prepare some clean excel files for his instructions in the book.
