I read this book when I was in high school having stumbled upon it in the library. I really loved it and it made a big impression on me. Recently I thought about it and managed to get hold of a copy. Having read it as an adult, I find it still stands up--it's clearly written, the author clearly has a feeling and affinity for his subject, and he expounds the subject with passion, sincerity, and no small amount of knowledge.This last point is where the book, I guess, falls short. OK, Arnold Posy was no Daniel Matt...but how many people really want to read Daniel Matt or even Martin Buber? What I mean is that this is a more accessible book, which is why it had such an impact on me when I was a teenager. It gets to the heart of the matter using simple language and doesn't assume previous knowledge of Jewish mysticism.I think this book would make a great bar-mitzvah or bat-mitzvah gift for any precious young teen who has a mystical inclination...don't laugh, I was perusing the I Ching and the writings of Lao Tzu at that age, but couldn't find anything accessible about my own tradition's mystical tradition.
Arnold Posy's Mystic Trends in Judaism tries to straddle a lot of lines, and winds up getting a muddled. My aunt taught me how to crochet and she had a copy of this book, 10 minutes later I had my copy ordered. This is the Bible of crochet terms,abbreviations, stitches and has great pictures!Something that I would like to see would be left handed variations of the stitches as I am a lefty so I have to kind of work that detail out on my own.Lastly, I think what would make it the best book ever would be if it was spiral bound, but I guess I can take it to kinkos and have it done.Overall I absolutely love this book!

This has come in handy so many times I've lost count. Things are explained well and clearly. I used to crochet, but just knew a few simple things. I've relearned those and am learning a lot of new and interesting, fun, and pretty stuff. I used one of the simple patterns to make a scarf for my mom that looks great. I'd never guess it was simple seeing it on her, and she loves it. I highly recommend this book for beginners and those relearning the craft like me.

Included in Cushman's `possessions' were Hattie Hosmer, another female sculptress; Jane Carlyle, troubled wife of historian Thomas; Emma Crow, infatuated with Cushman and marries her nephew Ned; and the Brownings, whose love story fascinates Cushman and her circle. Markus' narrative becomes more cohesive as the book expands, but in the beginning, it's unclear what her message in these women's experiences is; at times, Markus seems to dismiss Cushman's `infidelities' to Stebbins as nothing, which begs the question: what if Cushman was a man? Would Markus have treated the clandestine relationship with Emma Crow any differently (and the `serial monogamy' of both Cushman and Crow before and after their individual affair)? I cannot imagine a man with the same habits being literarily forgiven as Markus does Cushman. In addition, Markus' prose seems almost from the era in which her narrative is set, making her words seem quaint - they lose their impact. The inclusion of Jane Carlyle and her troubled life could have been a book on its own; Markus implies much about the potential feelings between Jane and Cushman, as well as between Jane and good friend Geraldine Jewsbury (one photo describes their physical positions as akin to a wedding photo - is this a stretch?). Regardless of the sometimes scattered storylines, this remains a very interesting examination of women who did indeed cross an `untried sea' (the title is explained only at the end of the book), and as performers, writers, biographers, and artists, expanded the choices of women in their own time and for the future.

About the Author
Kim Hjardar holds a MPhil in Nordic Viking and Medieval Culture from the University of Oslo and works as a lecturer in history at St Hallvard College. He has been involved in Viking and Medieval studies for more than fifteen years, both as a professional and through living history re-enactment. He is head of Norway’s biggest and oldest Viking re-enactment association.Vegard Vike is archaeological conservator at the Museum of Cultural History, Oslo. He has researched Viking handicraft technologies extensively. He works on a daily basis with X-rays and microscopes and the meticulous surface-cleaning of weapons from exhumed graves, something that has given him a deep and thorough knowledge of the subject. He has also trained in martial arts using the different weapons of the era, as well as carrying out actual weapons production based on historical weaponsmith techniques.

I have studied Viking history for years. This is a very detailed study of Viking warfare. The author follows virtually all of the major (and many not major) Vikings from early in Scandinavian history in great detail delving into life histories and some side notes on legends. Maps and illustrations are very good, including some I have not run across before. The Kindle edition allows you to expand the illustrations and more importantly the maps for studying. I read this on an 8 inch screen tablet using the Kindle app. My rating is four stars as the book lacks an index which is necessary in a book of this size and complexity.
An inside look at how the Vikings terrorized Europe in their day and ,boy, did they get around. Did not like the maps and charts as they were too small and faint to decipher. Makes clear the old poem "and from the fury of the Northmen, Oh Lord, deliver us".
Great photographs, well made book. Unfortunately, all that we’d like to know, we can’t. The Vikings were too busy doing and did little recording. Most of what we know came from the recordings of other countries.
The book followed along as it progressed through history about how the Vikings waged war and also peace. Not only in Europe and the near east but also in the Americas.
Excellent history book. Many illustrations. Easy to read.

Eleven years ago, while still a college student, Williams, who had become intrigued by the Amish as "a living link between a simpler time" and the hectic world of today, asked Coblentz to write a newspaper column he had envisioned about life in an Amish community. Today, her syndicated monthly column appears nationwide in more than 100 newspapers. This book is not just a compilation of the columns and recipes, however; Williams begins with his and Coblentz's story, than follows with a chapter on the history of the Amish. He has organized the recipes by meal, from breakfast to supper, with separate sections on dessert and on Sundays and special occasions. Each chapter contains history and background from Williams, comments and reminiscences from Coblentz, and some of her original columns, as well as additional recipes. This is a book with a lot of Amish lore and basic history about the Amish. I live in Amish country now and grew up near Amish country so this is "old hat" to me. But if this is a new world of people and history and customs, the book is enjoyable for the short descriptions and autobiographical stories.The recipes are fairly authentic as I see people cook around here that I know but...they are a lot of "open a can of mushroom soup" and more or less founded on the principle of stretching noodles and beef with sauces to make rib-sticking farmer's meals. The famous breakfast casserole (a sort of savory bread and bulk sausage pudding) that we all love at our local Amish restaurant is in the book. It's pretty easy and variants of this are useful for brunch parties, sleepovers and guests when you have to serve a crowd. And there is an "inexpensive" fruitcake recipe making two hearty loaves that is based on a very old boiled raisin cake that has no eggs and used to be made with any fat that was at hand (dripping, lard, bacon fat, butter.) It is sometimes called "War Cake" as it can be made with any grade of flour--this is a variant with chopped candied fruit and nuts to make it up like a Christmas cake.Spaghetti sauce involves hamburger and a big lashing of tomato juice. Lots of cheesy, potato casseroles.There are a few gems, homemade bread, Friendship (sour dough) bread, summer sausage, and the mashed potatoes people make around here (using cream cheese for the butter) but most of the recipes are things you can find in Betty Crocker or other standard ladies auxiliary type cook books.
I became aware of Elizabeth Coblentz after moving to Indiana in 1999. I used to write my Aunt weekly and include Elizabeth's newspaper article with my letter. She loved them as well. I was so glad to see Kevin Williams, Elizabeth's editor, had a cookbook published about Elizabeth and including her recipes. Elizabeth's articles were a personal glimpse into a quieter and more peaceful life, like stepping back in time. I admire the strength and peace of that lifestyle. I will enjoy making many of these recipes too, as I now try to avoid prepared (boxed, mixes and manufactured) foods as much as possible.
I was looking for authentic recipes, made entirely from scratch.. These are good but I'm disappointed to see store bought ingredients.. I like the anecdotes that go with it..
One of my all-time favorite books. I loved recipes and the wonderful stories of her beloved family. I have been reading weekly The Amish Cook in my newspaper. IT was a pleasant surprise that this was HER book. I also liked learning about Amish customs. Can't say enough about this book. Loved it.
I never thought I could become so emotionally moved by a cookbook...shed tears at the end...beautiful book...a keeper.
I grew up in Pennsylvania and this book reminds me of a simpler time. The recipes are some I grew up eating, like fried mush, so reading this brings back memories of my family sitting down to dinner every night. Very comforting book to curl up and read.
I have most of these books. I've tried several of the decks and enjoyed the process. I love the baking sections and all the commentary on Amish life.
Great book with many Amish recipes along with why and how the Amish cook and live. Thoroughly enjoyed reading.
