I love James Michener's writing and am going to Spain in spring so wanted some insight into Spanish culture. First, the book was written in 1968 during Franco's last year's as dictator so some of Michener's views are now dated. Starting in the most remote, under-populated portion of Spain put me off from reading the rest of the book. But several weeks later, I picked it up and tried again and found his deep knowledge of the culture, people, food and life of Spain to be fascinating (once he got past Extremadura). I have read a few current guidebooks and a history of Spain, but this was by far, the book that gave me a real sense of Spain and what I should look for when we travel there. There is a wonderful chapter on Barcelona and Catalonia which gave me a deeper understanding of the current situation between Catalonia and Madrid. I would have given it 5 stars except for that awful first chapter and the last chapter that was all about bullfighting, the bulls, the matadors ad nauseum. If you're into bullfighting, this is the chapter for you, otherwise just skip over it like I did.
I read this during a recent trip to Spain to get away from the craziness here. His tales were a lovely addition to the trip, and although over 50 years old, amazingly relevant to current events. Michener was fascinated by Spanish history in that they had literally boatloads of gold coming to them, but they became quite backwards for a very long time. They used all the wealth in a quest to "defend the faith" rather than invest in needed agriculture, and expelled endless Jews and Moors who contributed expertise, to purify the country. That, along with inept and sometimesderanged rulers, was enough to overwhelm all the advantages they started out with. There are also a lot of personal anecdotes and adventures that help to decide where to go and to appreciate what you see.
A brilliant book, endlessly fascinating and including immensely varied perspectives on everything concerning Spain. It is not a travelogue, but an analysis of the Spanish people, their way of life, their psychology, their history, art, music, etc., etc. Basing himself in a number of different cities, many of them small cities that are not often featured in books on Spain. But through his conversations with people in all these places, he gains insights into all aspects of Spanish life. Michener's acquainance with the country is old and intimate, and he is deeply knowledgeable about Spanish art, music, literature, drama, the bullfight, and discusses all these topics, and many more, not in a lengthy, well-ordered and complete study of the subject, but as each topic is suggested by events, conversations, buildings, paintings, music, and other "encounters" he has during his many visits to Spain. The writer's style is magnificent, simple and unaffected, but inspiringly lyrical when he turns to topics that he loves particularly, art, music, birds, the bulls, etc.A deeply satisfying book and one that the lover of Spain will want to return to time and again.
Unlike his historical novels (Hawaii etc) that I read 40 or so years ago, I was thrilled that this was a memoir. I'm planning to visit Spain next year. Michener created a masterpiece by combining multiple trips into stories organized by area/region. The depth and breadth of his knowledge of history, art, literature, architecture etc is amazing. He hooked up with a photographer and the combination of narrative and pictures is outstanding.
I lived for a while in Spain. I was overwhelmed with a sense of the pageantry of history. Greeks and Romans, medieval conquerors, biblical characters and monarchs had trod this very ground. However I travelled mostly in blind awe. It was then that I chanced upon an American edition of Michener's Iberia in a small magazine and book stall. Iberia covers it all in encyclopedic detail. It's dated now [1966] and Spain sadly has been wrenched into Starbucks sameness. But the ancient footprints remain. You need fore knowledge. You might want to take this book with you if you plan an Iberian visit. Michener is awesomely experienced in art, history and global politics. He is an entertaining story teller too. P.S. Spain is 3/4th. the size of Texas but with a vastly more long and complicated history in comparison to size. Michener does a pretty good job in describing Texas in his book Texas. That fellow sure got around [1907-1997.]
James Michener's Iberia: Spanish Travels and Reflections chronicles the author's travels in Spain and his long-term love affair with all things Spanish. Published in 1968, the text is of course dated. Iberia has chapters on Badajoz, Toldeo, Cordoba, Las Marismas, Sevilla, Madrid, Salamanca, Pamplona, Barcelona, Teruel, Santiago de Compostela, and Bull fighting.Michener devoted parts of several chapters, and one complete chapter, to bull fighting. He was a passionate aficionado of bullfights, even though the vast majority of the bull fights he saw were profoundly disappointing.Michener is known for his long, rather slow, books and this one is nearly 800 pages of reminiscences. He can take many pages to describe hardly anything, but the reader hardly cares as the writing is so good. Readers interested in Michener's three pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela will be disappointed by the lack of detail about those trips. The 1968 hardback edition features photographs by Robert Vavra, a friend of Michener. They are black and white and rather self-consciously "artistic."
The original publication of Iberia was 1968 and I read it then as I was a fan of Michener. I enjoyed it then but even more so the second time I read it in 2017 as I had just come back from a trip to Spain and Portugal. Iberia is a travel diary by Michener who was a very curious traveler and found many interesting people to chat with and many interesting places to visit while in Spain. I recommend it to anyone who has a particular interest in or is traveling to Spain.

Amber gives a gripping account of her path to true family. When I read the things her parents told her about her sexuality I would often hear my own:"I know you think you know what's best for you, but I've lived a lot longer than you and can tell you this won't end well.""If you ever have a girlfriend she will never be allowed in our house.""It's extremely selfish of you to do something that makes you happy without thinking about how it affects the family."The irony of the last quote is that Amber spends the entire book thinking about her family. They would not ask a straight child to sacrifice their happiness. They may be upset if they did not follow a more exact blueprint, but it would not be with the same severity. In Evangelicalism marriage covers a multitude of sins-- unless you're gay. This was all exasperated with her father's senior position in a ministry that regularly degrades LGBT people and champions a nuclear version of family that is becoming less and less accessible for a number of reasons. It left Amber radioactive as her future changed once she came out.I haven't met many Christians who know what gaslighting is, but anti-LGBT Christendom is really good at it. Half the battle is sifting through it. We are less successful and burdened down with shame because of propaganda machines like Focus on the Family. The only virtue of the ordeal for myself was knowing if I still held onto my Christian faith after all this, then I know it is truly mine. Amber is one of those too.Read this book and consider the lives of gay Christians and the kind of shrapnel homophobic attitudes may leave inside us. If it is in your power at all, make space for LGBT people in your life, known and unknown, Christian or not, it will save lives.
In the last chapter of Amber's courageous memoir, she relays a conversation she had with a pastor, asking for advice as she was thinking through making her story public. This pastor's thoughtful response is what compelled Amber, and compels so many of us who support Amber and others in the LGBT community, to share our stories: " Embedded in your identity is a responsibility to be a voice for change." Once we know, once we "get" it, once we've been transformed by our experiences, we are now responsible to speak what we know. Amber's honesty is, at times, disarming, but it is that kind of truth-telling that moves hearts and changes lives."Refocusing My Family" is a kind of death-and-resurrection story. Amber realizes the truth of who she is and must come to terms with that by letting go of the woman that she was raised to be: Heterosexual. Her coming out story - the one where her parents cast her out of their lives unless she "repents" and walks away from a "gay lifestyle" - wrenched my heart. Yet embedded in all her pain was a seed of hope, thanks to the warm embrace of the folks at Highlands Church in Denver and the skilled counseling of her therapist. That hope fuels Amber's desire to live authentically with the knowledge that she's God's beloved today just as she was before she realized she was gay. Fortunately, she has the perfect partner to walk the rest of this journey with her, and that's her wife, Clara. I wish them much happiness and pray that anyone reading this review would pick up a copy of this gem of a book and risk having your heart changed for the better.
I bought this book for my Kindle last night and finished reading it this morning. Amber, thank you so much for sharing your life in print. I come from a fundamentalist Christian background. Thankfully many have become more open and accepting but not all have. Our son is gay and we have received open criticism for out support of him from some in the Christian community. When I was at a pride festival last year, I saw a young woman with a sign that read "Most important thing I learned at bible college was Love is Greater than Dogma". Happy to hear Amber has found love and is establishing her own family.
O my, how I appreciate Amber sharing her story. I'm 68 and straight, but I've had my own closets to come out of, and daring to live an authentic life, in spite of what religion tells us, takes a lot of courage. Raised as an Evangelical fundamentalist, and having a daddy who was a Southern Baptist preacher (and also my hero), I came into my own very late in life (mid-50's). It's painful to have all your beliefs challenged. Doubt pretty much became my faith story. One of my biggest challenges was regarding the LGBTQ community. Today I call myself an ally, and some of my best friends are gay, but even I have lost family and friends along the way over this issue. Thank you Amber for having the guts to live your life.

The book itself is fine however, the title explicitly states that the Kindle version comes with an access code to the Navigate 2 Essentials site. After extensively searching the book and contacting Amazon I was informed that the Kindle version does not have an access code despite falsely being advertised and sold with the impression that this would be included. If you buy the Kindle version just be aware that you will not gain access to the Navigate 2 Essentials site and will have to find an alternate means to an access code.
I'm currently taking an EMT course and this is definitely the handbook of it all. If you buy the new version, there's an online access code in the back cover that gives you access to online quizzes, summaries, outlined, audio book, etc. for 1year :) Definitely handy for reviewing when you're driving and also when you want to test yourself on the material. The book can also be a paper holder for strong winds and kill spiders, or knock someone down if this was thrown at them (it's thick with knowledge). 0_0
It's a big, fat, expensive book. It's got everything you need to know though! If someone breaks in your house, throw this at them! Then pick up the book and it will tell you exactly how to fix them. If you need it, buy it! Like I said, everything you need to know! It's also good at helping you sleep!
UPDATE: This book DOES come with an access code. HOWEVER, you need to confirm what access code you NEED first. This text book comes with ESSENTIALS access, not ADVANTAGE, PREFERRED or PREMIER. Many EMS classes require PREMIER so you need to make sure you are purchasing what you need.I originally rated this 5 stars. However, I'm changing it to 1. This whole access code nonsense is very deceptive, especially when many people believe it is what they need when it says "Essentials."
The physical version of this textbook is GINORMOUS. I hate carrying heavy textbooks, and prefer to use kindle versions whenever possible, that way I can take my tablet wherever I am and do some reading.Content wise, this version of the textbook has exactly what the physical version has. It is not, however, an exact replica of the page layout of the physical version. I don't really care about that, as long as the content is the same I will get what I need out of the book. One thing to note is that there is NOT an access code with this version. I called the JB Learning and purchased the access code as a standalone. When I bought the access code, I was able to use a discount code. I am not sure if that is something they always do, but it made the overall price of the kindle version textbook and the access code to be less than what the physical textbook would have been - so that is something to think about. As for the textbook itself...all l I can say is that it is a textbook. Course reading is not always exciting, but this book gets the job done, and is an integral part of the EMS training.
Bought brand new in paper back format description said the book had access code to Navigate 2, which it did, however when trying to use the code the website explicitly said the code had already been redeemed. How is this possible? The code should not have expired because the book itself was brand new. Book was great price but without access code it is unnerving and frustrating.
This book is needed for my EMT course...what I love about it most is that theres a scratcher inside..once you scratch it you go to their website, use the code and if you have an mp3 player, you can download the audio which reads each chapter word by word! It was very helpful in my EMT class. The workbook really helps you understand the material.
I love that this book has SO MANY practice questions. I was impressed by how fat it was! Lots of bang for your buck. You get vocabulary matching, 30-40 multiple choice, fill in the blanks, crossword and applied context multiple choice, fill in the bank and short answer questions for each chapter. On some chapters you also have anatomy labeling, It's a great resource for reviewing important material. The questions focus on a mix of vocabulary and essential concepts, but also have critical thinking questions such as a given scenario and logic of problem diagnosis and appropriate interventions.I LOVE THAT THE ANSWER KEY INCLUDES PAGE NUMBERS FROM THE TEXTBOOK SO YOU CAN FIND THE EXPLANATION SO EASILY.It wasn't required for my EMT course, but even if I was cash-strapped I still highly recommend this workbook. Definitely helped me retain information better after reading each chapter and were great for review prior to tests.

Review
“Since Blondie formed 40 years ago, one thing has remained constant: if the band’s co-founder Chris Stein isn’t onstage with a guitar slung around his neck, chances are he’s off somewhere with a camera, taking pictures. Now, the results of his four-decade-long hobby have been compiled in a new book, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk…Though the photographs in the book span the band’s four decades, they’re rooted mostly in the punk scene that emerged in the ’70s and ’80s, paralleling Blondie’s rise. Looking at them, it’s easy to imagine how much fun the duo had not just making pictures, but also making music. The pictures…capture the essence of a lost, romantic moment in New York history.” –New York Times T Magazine"[One of the] best books of the year" –American Photo “…Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, an art book being published to coincide with the band’s 40th anniversary. The book contains scores of photos, many of them never before published, of Blondie, the Ramones, the Talking Heads and other pioneers of the 1970s New York City rock scene. That aesthetic comes through in Stein’s unfussy, mostly black-and-white images, which capture Harry, David Bowie, Joan Jett and other musicians in spontaneous, revealing moments.” –CNN “In 1974, New York City was the home to a potent burgeoning punk and new wave scene. Blondie’s Chris Stein was there for all of it: his guitar in one hand, his camera in the other. As Blondie celebrates its 40th anniversary, Stein is releasing his first book of photographs, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, which documents his life on stage, on the road and at home, including portraits of his friends who made the downtown scene: Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Joan Jett, Jean Michael Basquiat and many more.” –Time Magazine “To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Blondie, Chris Stein is releasing his treasure trove of his photographs from the New York City music scene of the 1970s and early 1980s in his new book, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk.” –Smithsonian “Hearken back to the era of punk and new wave music with these snapshots. Chris Stein was at the center of the burgeoning punk/new wave scene in 1970s New York City as the lead guitarist for Blondie. Cutting edge bands such as Talking Heads, the Ramones and Television were establishing their sound at clubs like the now-defunct CBGB. And as a member of one of the leading groups on the scene and a recent photography graduate of New York’s School of Visual Arts, Stein was uniquely positioned to document the musical pioneers of that time and place.” –Hollywood Reporter “…Chris Stein, has released a new photography book remembering its glory days. Though Stein claims to have thousands of photographs in his archives, the way he describes his photographic process is surprisingly casual. Chris Stein / Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, chronicles the early punk scene, featuring not only rare photos of Debbie Harry, but also Joan Jett, Iggy Pop, the Ramones, and Andy Warhol.” –New York Magazine“Blondie guitarist and songwriter Chris Stein released the almost self-titled Chris Stein / Negative, a handsome photobook featuring shots that begin in the mid-Seventies and end with a picture of Debbie Harry and Philip Glass taken at Lou Reed's memorial service.” –Rolling Stone Magazine"Less than a month after the release of Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, the coffee table debut from Blondie's co-founding member went on backorder. In case there was any doubt, that's how beloved they still are—40 years into their career." –Vice"Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, culls from Stein’s private collection going back to the early 1970s, with cameos by the Ramones, Joan Jett, Iggy Pop, and William S. Burroughs, among others. Harry, though, lures you in, every inch the glamorous rock star but also at ease in candid settings. " -Boston Globe"I’m loving the new book of largely never-before-seen Blondie photographs from Chris Stein, out now from Rizzoli. So. Cool. " –The Fashion Spot "On the occasion of the band’s 40th anniversary year, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk offers a revealing look back at one of the most trailblazing and influential bands of our time and the punk scene that they pioneered. From Blondie’s early days, to their world travels and sold-out shows, to their legendary musical counterparts, it is all shown from the inside view of Chris Stein." -Life and Times"Along with the iconic Debbie Harry, Chris Stein is the driving force behind the influential ’70s punk/New Wave group Blondie. In addition to his talents as a guitarist and songwriter for the group, Stein is an accomplished photographer, as demonstrated in this new book. It not only features photos of Blondie throughout the ’70s to mid-80s, but also captures the mood and feel of New York City in throes of the punk rock scene defined by landmarks such as CBGB and the Mudd Club. The book also includes photos Stein took of city scene-sters like Basiquat, Richard Hell and Stephen Sprouse as well as fellow bands such as the Ramones, the New York Dolls, and Siouxie and the Banshees." -Brooklyn Based“With this anniversary, Chris Stein, guitarist for the band, has released his book, showcasing a grungier New York and documenting Blondie’s road to success. While Debbie Harry, singer for Blondie and Stein’s former girlfriend, remains the star of this book, Stein also captured some of the most influential punkers and rockers to come out of NYC’s music underground. Every picture tells a story, and along with his snaps, Stein has plenty of stories.” –NewYork.com

I must confess, I am pretty much a lifelong fan of Blondie. I was 11 years old in 78 when i first heard Heart Of Glass on AM radio, growing up in Florida. I was brought up on country music and up to that point, obsessed with another blonde, Dolly Parton. Until I laid eyes on the first image i'd ever seen of Debbie Harry. My world changed after I discovered Blondie. I read every magazine article I could find about them, mostly Creem Magazine stuff. Through Blondie I discovered so much more. Ramones, The Talking Heads, The Pretenders, Devo and more, Punk music that most of my peers didn't even know existed. Images of Debbie Harry have been a part of my life for the last 36 years. I've been looking forward to this books release for awhile now, but I thought I've seen most of these images before. From internet articles about the book, many of the images in this book were used in "Making Tracks, The Rise and Fall Of Blondie" By Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Victor Bockris (Another Great Book). I was wrong. So many images new to me, and not just of Debbie, but some amazing pictures of other artist like you've never seen them before( Joan Jett, for instance). Chris Stein is a noted photographer and historian, there from the very beginning of the New York Punk Rock scene. He is of course also the guitarist and founding member of Blondie and with Debbie, chief songwriter. If you know anything about the New York Punk scene you've seen Chris Stein's pictures before. Negative is a must have for anyone who has an interest in the birth of Punk. The pictures are amazing, but the captions written by Stein are really a fun read. Remembrances of each photo, what was going on at the time and sometimes anecdotes about the subject. Kindly remembering some who are no longer with us. So yeah, I'm a fan and always will be. I'm not just a Blondie fan though. I'm a bit of a Punk historian myself and this book is something I will treasure. Thank you Mr. Stein for giving us this book, not only showcasing your photographic talents but also helping to commemorate 40 years of Blondie and 40 years of punk.
A criminally underrated photographer, and a criminally underrated book. Chris has an effortless ability at capturing amazing shots, and while that's interesting - the internet has made us desensitized to amazing photography. We expect access, and intimate shots of our heroes are no longer special. That's an unfortunate reality. Chris' book goes a step further than providing said access and intimacy, by his accompanying words to go with the photos. It reminds me of Kirk Hammett's "Too Much Horror Business" book. I'm not the biggest horror fan, but Kirk's words alongside the incredible pieces in his collection made the book incredible. The same is true here, although I'm admittedly a fan of everything and everyone Chris shot. The point being, it's not only a collection of amazing photos, but Chris' recollections of each shot are what make this book so great -- and what makes it stand out from many, many other photo books.
Blondie rocked my world in a way no other band before or after has. Rock 'n roll had become something huge. Something almost unwieldy in its giant, self-important social relevance. Disco created a hopelessly vapid environment where people could meet, dance, mate and move to the suburbs to raise their kids. Punk was something else entirely. Punk was an arrogant upstart that didn't know its place and didn't care."Chris Stein/Negative" chronicles that moment in time when punk hurled itself into our collective consciousness. There is a distinct visual quality to punk that is almost as important as the music. The look of punk was put together at a thrift store and held together with safety pins. It was inspired by B-movies, cartoons, stuff fished out of the bargain bin and junk found at the back of grandma's closet. Punk was born out of poverty, anger and the urge to create. All performed against the background of the dirty, depressed late 70's, before urban renewal priced everybody out of the cool places. Chris Stein captures that in this book. There is a picture in this book that explains the impact of punk and Blondie. Clem and Debbie walking down a street looking wildly distinct from their surroundings and people turning to stop and stare at them. ("People stop and stare at me...". Sing it. Go ahead. You know you want to.) Stein ruminates as to whether people were staring at them because they recognized Clem and Debbie, or because Clem and Debbie looked remarkably like they'd just arrived from a hipster 2013 fashion show. It is all there in one photograph. The incredible impact of punk announcing its irreverent arrival at the end of the 1970's. The future. Chris Stein managed to capture that impact in one picture. That's why you need to buy this book.
A great book with fantastic insights both in text and photos of a unique pop culture - the beginnings of the punk rock movement. And if you love the visage of Deborah Harry there are some truly iconic images of her, for she is truly one of the most beautiful women of the 20th century. The product is of very high quality. Ordering and delivering were top notch via Amazon Prime. The book came shrink wrapped so there were no cosmetic book cover issues. Those folks that were part of this rock revolution were very talented, smart and this book gives an insight into those iconic New York musicians that gave us so much enjoyment.
If you have any interest in the 70s punk scene you must check out this book! Not only is it full of AMAZING photos, including many of Debbie Harry, but Chris Stein's comments and memories that accompany the photos are just plain great. I have several coffee table books on punk including the history of CBGBs and The Best of Punk Magazine but this is my new favorite!!

From Dallas Galvin's Introduction to The Art of War War is a howling, baying jackal. Or is it the animating storm? Suicidal madness or the purifying fire? An imperialist travesty? Or the glorious explosion of a virile nation made manifest upon the planet? In all recorded history, this debate is recent, as is the idea of peace to describe an active state happier than a mere interregnum between fisticuffs. Astounding as it may seem, war has consistently won the debate. In fact, it never had serious competition-not until August 24, 1898, anyway, when Czar Nicholas II of Russia called for an international conference specifically to discuss "the most effectual means" to "a real and durable peace." That was the first time nations would gather without a war at their backs to discuss how war might be prevented systematically. Nicholas was successful. His first Peace Conference was held in 1899. It was followed by a second, in 1907. These meetings gave rise to a process in which the world gained a common code of international laws. It was a moment when peace and the trials of war were under the microscope of the civilized world. Off in a very quiet corner of this stage, there also appeared two scholars: one, a ghost, Sun Wu-this is Sun Tzu's actual name; Sun is the family name, and Tzu an honorific-a member of a Chinese clan of experts on arms and fighting, who had lived some 2,400 years earlier; the other, a librarian and student of the Chinese classics, Lionel Giles, who published his translation of The Art of War in 1910. He, too, was a son of eminence-his father was the great sinologist Herbert Giles-and he transported Sun Tzu's urgent injunctions on the nature of war across vast reaches of time and culture; the task was extraordinary, the impetus behind it almost saintly. The influence of the work of these two men colors our lives even as this text is written. But it did not come without effort, and even today, with a century of English-language scholarship on Asian literature, religion, and societies behind us, there is still much to puzzle the general reader. World War I and its carnage would soon burst upon the world, leaving an estimated 25 million dead, twice the tally for all the wars of nineteenth-century Europe. Nicholas and his entire class would disappear amid the terrors of revolution in Russia, China, and Mexico, to name but the grandest uprisings. World War II would follow with no fewer than 60 million dead, and on its heels a whirl of wars for independence, civil wars, and the surrogate wars of Vietnam, Korea, Africa, the Balkans, and the Middle East-all in all, a century-long testament to the failure of humanity's best intentions. It would be an odd soul who did not find himself feeling as Abraham Lincoln did in his Second Inaugural Address, on March 4, 1865, as the American Civil War was ending: "Fondly do we hope-fervently do we pray-that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away." Yet it takes little experience to understand the futility of belligerence alone, as Sun Tzu wrote: "[H]e who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory" (chap. IV, paragraph 15). On the world front or the level of the individual, the issue is not force, not arms-it is strategy. In his study of Mao Tse-tung, modern warfare's most ardent student of Sun Tzu, Robert Payne notes: "Sun Wu's ideas on war are exceedingly adaptable, . . . nearly all of them demonstrating how the commander of a small force can overcome a powerful enemy, given suitable conditions of his own making. These apothegms have a peculiarly Chinese flavor, hardheaded, deeply philosophical, often showing a disturbing knowledge of the human soul under stress" (Robert Payne, Mao Tse-tung; see "For Further Reading"). But how did Sun Tzu know what he knew? Where did he get his information? Can we trust it?

The Baron Antoine Henri de Jomini's "The Art of War" is an early classic on military strategy and tactics. With von Clausewitz, he was one of the more widely read scholars on the subject in the 19th century. His book tends to have an abstract, scholarly air to it that suggests that he was more of an "arm chair" theorist than a man whom he learned much from--Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon may have had general perspectives on warfare, but he was also someone who was able to be improvisational on the battlefield, and Jomini cannot quite capture that in this work. Nonetheless, a classic.Charles Messenger's Introduction does single out Jomini for mention, when he notes (Page v): "Nineteenth -century military thought was dominated by two men, one a German and the other a Swiss. . . . They were von Clausewitz and Jomini." Jomini argued that (Page vii): "Strategy decodes where to act; logistics brings the troops to this point; grand tactics determines the manner of execution and the employment of the troops."As Jomini's actual work begins, he identifies the six key components of the art of war (Page 2):"1. Statesmanship in its relation to war.2. Strategy, or the art of properly directing masses upon the theater of war, either for defense or for invasion.3. Grant tactics.4. Logistics, or the art of moving armies.5. Engineering--the attack and defense of fortifications.6. Minor tactics."The book itself, then, considers these elements of the art of war. No need to go into great detail. But some general points are in order. At one point, he emphasizes the importance of "lines"--interior lines, where one side has a more compact line and can move troops from one point to another with greater facility than the enemy; exterior lines, which are longer. If a smaller force, interior lines are critical; if a larger force, exterior lines may prove no impediment to success. One facet of this book is his diagrams depicting various orders of attack (pages 188 and following). This tends, as noted earlier, to be pretty abstract. One hesitates to think that officers in the heat of combat will intellectually assess the various orders of attack and rationally choose one over another. Among these are straight linear orders (where the two forces approach one another in straight lines) to "en echelon" attacks, where the lines are arrayed in depth. He notes in his conclusion that (Page 321) "War in its ensemble in not a science, but an art."So, if one might be interested in an analysis of military strategy and tactics from the early part of the 19th century, this is not a bad starting point. It is a classic on the subject, and, even if too abstract and academic, can be a useful book to understand the military in that era.
I want to tell future readers of this book in this way. I read it first when I was 14 or 15. I thought it was a book on how to smartly fight a war. Then I re-read it when I was 28 and it occurred to me that it may be an instruction book on how to navigate an honorable life. Years passed and I recently found it at the bottom of a box in my closet. I read it again at age 56. I realized it has more to offer. If you read this book, you will actively have to replace Sun Tzus' ancient terms and placement of hierarchy and apply them to modern situations and people. Family, bosses, neighbors, employees and the list goes on. It is my belief that this "manual" can help solve minor and major disruptions in life if used correctly. It is a book meant for good.
This is a ~15 page "summary" of the book. Ordered this thinking it was the full text because it doesn't say otherwise in the description.
It’s clear that Mr. Gagliardi is extremely passionate about all things Sun Tzu. Through various repackaged books sold both here at Amazon and through the “Science of Strategy Institute†he set up to sell you Sun Tzu themed board games and videos, he has certainly created a virtual cottage industry of Sunzi-phernalia. In addition, he also offers personalized training packages for up to $1,500 to amp up your ability to unleash the power of Sun Tzu’s system of total and complete victory in all competitive endeavors you face, whether in the boardroom or the bedroom. But all of this aside, how successful is Mr. Gagliardi at his most basic task: competently translating Sun Tzu’s original text, The Art of War? The answer: not very. This book is a complete mess, with unforgivable errors in both translation and general knowledge concerning China and the Warring States era present in almost every verse. In lieu of a laundry list I will give you just a one line example where Mr. Gagliardi clearly shows that he is out of his depth in terms of translation competence. I maintain a database of 30 translations of The Art of War in English that I use to compare and contrast various efforts, and included the screenshot of the relevant verse so you can compare it to how others have approached the text.In Chapter 11, Sun Tzu is concerned that his own soldiers might either break and run or else refuse to support the other flanks of his own army while in battle. To show how this can be remedied, Sun Tzu brings up the example of how a certain snake can provide a valuable lesson for his soldiers. As Gagliardi translates it, the line reads: “Act like an ordinary mountain snake.â€From a novice’s perspective, this could be a defensible translation choice. The original Chinese characters for this line are: CHANG SHAN ZHI SHEIf you looked up each character individually via the internet you could definitely make a case that the line could read: ordinary mountain (of) snakeThe problem is that professional translation doesn’t work this way (a one-for-one translation of characters), and you have to understand all of the nuances applicable to how these thoughts are put together, especially when you are talking about a millennia old text written in a language vastly different than its modern equivalent. What a competent Sinologist would easily understand, but Gagliardi obviously didn’t, is that the character CHANG isn’t functioning as an adjective modifying the noun “snake,†but instead is the proper noun indicating the name of the mountain on which the snake resides. So the line should read: “Act like the snake of Mt. Changâ€So while Gagliardi is perfectly content in his own ignorance that Sun Tzu is talking about an ordinary snake, what the text is really saying is that he needs his soldiers to be like an EXTRAordinary snake which possesses the magical ability to continue providing support to its endangered other half even after being cleaved into two separate parts. Now if you are looking to really get beyond the basics of the translation (say like someone who is willing to shell out $1,500 for advanced personal lessons) and might be curious where this Mt. Chang is located and why it was relevant to Sun Tzu, you might be surprised. Sun Tzu never actually mentioned Mt. Chang, but instead was referring to a Mt. Heng, where this extraordinary snake supposedly lived (by the way, Sun Tzu gave the snake a name, the Shuairan, a fact that was completely missed by Gagliardi). It turns out that the oldest extant copy of the Art of War was transcribed during the Han Dynasty period. What professional Sinologists know but Mr. Gagliardi might not, is that in classical Chinese there was a prohibition on using characters that were the same as the personal name of the sitting emperor. At around the same time as we believe the earliest version of The Art of War was transcribed, Emperor Wen of Han was sitting on the throne and had a personal name of “Liu Heng†which means that “Heng†would need to be omitted from all texts. “Heng†actually means “Perseverance†and it turns out that “Chang†also carries the meaning of “Perseverance†so Mt. Heng was changed to Mt. Chang to get around this prohibition—an interesting tidbit for your next trivia night.Of course the name change does nothing to impact your understanding of the Art of War, but does illustrate the difference between buying a copy of the The Art of War from a professional Sinologist who understands both the translation issues and can provide relevant historical and philosophical background, and the rank amateur who does this for a hobby and wants to pass off an inferior product hoping you won't know the difference. There are too many professionally done Sun Tzu translations available by qualified individuals (Ames, Griffith, Sawyer, Ivanhoe, Mair, Minford) to justify paying the same amount of money for Mr. Gagliardi’s lackluster effort. You wouldn’t select a surgeon for your triple-bypass surgery simply because he was “passionate†about cutting people open and learned some things on the internet. You would want to select someone who has years of relevant professional experience under their belt, and just as important, board certified. Fortunately, the stakes aren't quite so high when choosing the best Sun Tzu translation, but the same principle should apply. Don't be an ordinary purchaser of this classic text, be an extraordinary one.
Just received the book. No where in the description does it say it is a shortened version of the book. I feel like I was ripped off
NOT THE FULL TEXT....these are the cliff notes......product page sucks.
This is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. It should say PUBLIC DOMAIN as it is like a copy from someone who took notes off of someone who took notes who took notes off someone who doesn't even write in the English language! It is woefully abridged (to the max) looks like it was not edited or proofread and I loathe it. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL
The author adds his own knowledge along with Sun Tzu's. And the author's additions are excellent. You might find Sun Tsu on the net in PDF or something, but I wanted a book form and the author was a pleasant surprise for his own good knowledge on these matters. Its a fairly short book, but that it compares so much with modern warfare and intelligence wars that you should get to know it.

Holy cow this book was an eye opener. I will not ever go on a cruise. Not a big ship fan and after reading this book, no way.
Useful book.
Detailed and specific facts pertaining to the Cruise Ship industry is desgined to make readers aware of cold hard facts and cover ups that may have gone unknown up until now. This book is jammed full of so much information, that it is a must read for anyone who is thinking about taking a Cruise for a vacation this year. With everything from how to avoid scams, to keeping yourself and your family healthy and disease free to also avoiding crime and harm that could await you on your next trip on sailing the high seas. What is a true asset to this book, is it written through the eyes of an experienced maritime lawyer who is there to steer you through the rough waters of the ever changing cruise ship industry.
Charles Lipscon's Unsafe on the High Seas should be required reading for anybody planning a cruise ship vacation.Having been a victim of cruise ship crime (my cabin was robbed!), I wish that I had had the opportunity to read this book before going on that cruise so many years ago. I was laboring under the false security assumption that going on a cruise would be like stepping on to the Love Boat - a luxurious and safe getaway. Boy, was I wrong.Mr. Lipscon details the many types of crime that occur onboard ship, in detail. He also discusses unfair practices towards ship employees, environmental issues related to the cruise industry, hidden costs associated with those "bargain cruises" and ever so much more. Before planning a cruise, Read This Book!
As someone who suffers from seasickness just by watching an old episode of The Love Boat, I have never been tempted to go on one, but all three of my older children are planning cruises in the near future. My oldest daughter already has one booked for May. I will not let her get aboard until she and her fiancée read this report. It is the most concise expose I have ever read; full of many facts and common sense tips. As the author, Charles Lipcon says, "Cruises can be fun and a wonderful way to vacation, but everyone should be aware of the dangers." Anyone who is considering taking a cruise needs to read his recommendations for ensuring a safe trip.
Just got back from a cruise and wish I had read this book before I went. The cruise industry makes everything look so functional and organized, when really it is just a coverup. The author really exposes the down and dirty of the cruise business and how money overcomes the need for common sense. If you are planning a cruise this is a must read to not only protect your vacation but to protect you and your families life. I would not go on another cruise without this book in my sea bag.
This is a book that offers a unique yet much-needed take on the cruising industry. Written by a maritime lawyer, the book concisely explains how to protect yourself from the dark side of cruising, including assaults, stalking, scams and the norovirus. It also explains how the cruise industry will not protect you. In fact, many horrible things happen on cruise ships every day, but they get swept under the rug. And for the few that can achieve monetary justice through a lawsuit, a particular law will keep them from seeing all of their money. All in all, Unsafe on the High Seas is a book that needs to be read by anyone wanting to go on a cruise.
I have to say, if I was planning on taking a cruise anytime in the near future this book was enough to make me think twice about it! From the truth about labor to the sanitation issues faced by passengers while on board, this book takes all of the hype out of taking a vacation on the high seas and gives passengers some great ideas on how to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. I'd say this is a definite must-read to anyone thinking about spending their next vacation away from dry land.
