This was an excellent book!!! Went on our first trip to Nicaragua and this book was invaluable!!! It is so well written that we read it cover to cover and is organized in such a manner as to make it very easy to find what you're looking for. Would highly recommend it!!!

I used this guide during my three weeks in Nicaragua and enjoyed Leonardi's informative writing style. This handbook is more exhaustive, and more up to date, than "Footprint's Central America & Mexico Handbook".This handbook's recommendations for accommodations/restaurants are right on the money and valuable. This guide is up-to-date and I found his recommendations to always be valid. In fact, his is one of the few guides that will tell you, candidly, no punches pulled, what he thinks: very good seafood, bad paella", "attentive service, mediocre food".Richard Leonardi's writing is succinct and unencumbered by the superfluous. He gives you a solid mental picture, within a paragraph or two, of what to expect and how you can enjoy it.I really enjoyed his "Further Reading & Cinema" and the history, economic, culture and environment sections are sufficient, but I would encourage you to also take with you the excellent book, "In Focus Nicaragua" (see my review).Frustrating, and found in all Footprint guides, is the cost guide they use for accommodations. Instead of just stating what the price per room is, in dollars, they complicate it and give you a code table that you will often have to flip back and consult to remember what the cost represents. For example, a hotel that is LL=$150+, A=$46-$65. There is a better way than codes.Leonardi mentions safety in his introduction to Nicaragua, but I found no mention of the rising problems with crime and gangs in Managua (Capital of Nicaragua). For the past few years... the area around `La Catedral Vieja' has become dangerous, an area for violent crime. In fact, when I asked to go to this area in the daytime, the taxi drivers told me be careful, using the words: "peligroso, peligroso". While I at the Old Cathedral's I talked with the resident shoe-shine man, and he also told me that this area was now very dangerous at night. He said he leaves every day at 5pm because, "me gusto mi vida."That said, this is a very impressive guide which I strongly recommend. For those going to various Central American countries I would recommend "Footprint's Central America & Mexico Handbook". Strongly Recommended 4.5 stars
Richard Leonardi's travel guide on Nicaragua as part of the Footprint series is not only the best English language guide that I have ever read, it is also the best travel companion and resource that I have ever used punto finale.I was four years in the Merchant Navy and in my current life as a film maker and journalist for the BBC and Irish television I have travelled extensively. What this means is that I have had continual need of practical, up to date and accurate information on the countries I have visited like Japan, Mexico, the Faeroe Islands or elsewhere. Practical help in a travel book is usually the first refuge of the traveller who is stuck and the last refuge of that scoundrel author who does not check and check again the details he or she is tasked to provide for an extremely dependent audience. In this regard Richard Leonardi is on the side of the travel guardian angels. In fact his book is so good that in my five week stay in Nicaragua I sought him out to tell how much I appreciated his "companionship" whilst myself and my partner were on the road. I never do things like that!The author actually lives in the country and takes a passionate interest in the life of Central America generally and this commitment shines through the book. Indeed, we found only one mistake in this book of some 300 pages if the excellent maps at the back of the book are included. The mistake is forgivable and occurs on page 134 in a reference to the beautiful town of Rivas. We were looking for a place which would change American Express travellers cheques and the book refers us to El Banco de Finanzas which is correctly described as being near the fire station in the town. The only problem is that the staff there firmly denied any policy of changing American Express cheques. On the immediate plus side, however, the book refers the weary traveller to a nearby restaurant the Rayuela which more than makes up for the recalcitrant bank staff with its well made, cheap and entirely fresh fare. Indeed, accurate descriptions and honest assessments of restaurants and eateries is a feature of the book. The best restaurant and craic (an Irish phenomenon including talk, song and dance) from Leonardi's extensive research was found at Dona Conchi's in Granada where I came away in the early hours with a singing palate and a mortero or mortar and pestle made of volcanic lava. This gift from the gracious Dona Conchi herself now has pride of place in my house. The only other quibble I have with the book is that the description of the route to the fascinating El Fortin in Leon could be made clearer as one risks approaching the historic fort via the municipal dump which is very unhealthy and possibly dangerous. The images of people scavenging through the detritus and residue of once revolutionary Leon's inhabitants will stay with me for ever.Those two slight complaints aside, I cannot praise Footprints travel guide to Nicaragua highly enough. Quite apart from the author's diligence in ensuring the accuracy of his information, his descriptions of the political and cultural importance of Nicaragua are second to none. We climbed three volcanoes whilst in Nicaragua and we felt much closer to the history, legends and physical aspects of these sometimes fiery mountains from digesting the contents of the guide book. The best example of this comes in the descriptions of angry Concepcion and earth mother Maderas on the beautiful island of Ometepe. Ometepe and El Mar Dulce (the huge fresh water sea which surrounds the island) was the highlight of our trip. On page 139, Leonardi tells the ancient story of how a beautiful princess called Ometepetl met with Nagrando a warrior prince and the pair fell in love. Their respective tribes, however, were at war and this led to a suicide pact between them. This destruction of a match made in heaven led the angry Gods to flood the land producing the vast fresh water lake which exists to this day.There is one other aspect which pleases me personally. Leonardi never patronises his leadership by being bland. He offers his opinions on many aspects of life in Nicaragua and bases these opinions on extensive research. It is this exciting mixture of hard facts and general cultural information which makes the book such a success. In fact you could never set foot in Nicaragua and still buy the book because you would feel you knew the country so well after reading it. The layout is easy to handle with boxed sections for particular pieces of information and a regular format for each of the geographical areas so you know, for example, that there will always be a food section at that certain point in the sector in which you are interested. The pictures are reflect the Nicaragua we saw and have been composed by people who liked taking photographs which helps. Go out and buy it. I admit that I may be predudested because I met Richard on a tour in a very remote part of Nicaragua, that was desolate and without normal tourist type facilities, he assisted as a guide and exteremely impressed me with his knowledge and the respect he had with and for the locals and how they responded to him. I later found out about his book and purchased it. He has truly and honestly done outstanding research in his writing; he has lived there close to 7 years and developed close connects with the people and facilities with whom he deals and writes about. I bought both this book and the Moon Handbook of Nicaragua. I found the Footprint guide more simple and more to the point--easy to read in an evening to "get your bearings", and the maps are great. The Moon Handbook is more complete.I would recommend buying both these guidebooks--they are complimentary.

The book came in great condition and faster than expected. It followed the series pretty much, until it got towards the end. The wolves are, as mentioned, a bit leggy but I do love the art. The anime series itself is very beautiful and I am a huge fan.
From the anime I didn't know there could end it differently and in such a good way. This ending makes the story end in a way that it will keep going. I know the anime did the same, but this ending was greater. I still love the anime more though.

I'm a HUGE fan of the fantastic anime, Wolf's Rain. So, it would come as no suprise that I would want to get my hands on the manga adaption to it...even though I had heard from many other fans that it was disappointing to them.I liked it.It's loyal to the anime for the first chapter or two, but quickly branches off and does it's own thing. Becoming a very different story. I honestly enjoyed the new version of the tale, and felt that the only real flaw with the 2 volume manga was that it was too rushed...thus lacking in character development and causing the story to be a little weak and confusing.I think it would have been much better had it been a few volumes longer in all honestly, and do feel that other fans would have appreciated it more had that been the case.If you're a fan of the anime, it's worth checking out...but I'd suggest checking your local library for it first if you're unsure about your enjoyment of it.
Excellent manga. In the second, and final installment, the story still manages to keep you interested. As a two part manga, it is even easier to want to devour it as quickly as possible. As a side note: some aspects differ from the Anime, giving a whole new level of appreciation for those who have started with the anime before the manga.

Stunning, surprising love poems! (Categories provided are suited to novels, so translate for love poems). I'm officiating a wedding that will have Nizar's poetry in the ceremony, so that motivated my purchase, but what a find. Simple, deep, intimate, and surprising lines to describe love.
A gorgeous book! My Arab boyfriend loved it and he said the translation keeps the rhythm of the poetry while trying to convey the true essence of the poem in Arabic which is hard to do!
I had previously ordered a book "Entering the Sea:The Erotic and other poetry of Nizar Qabbani" and didnt realize that this is more of his work, the names were spelled differently(Where were my eyes that day?) but really, I was pleased to have it, because it provided me with even more of his beautiful poetry to enjoy.The love that pours out of these words is amazing,I can only wish that someone loved me enough to write words like this with such heat and intensity of feelings!So do yourself a favor and read this book.You may need potholders though.....some of it can get rather warm! :)
I love Nizar Gabbani for a number of reasons. Really, he deserves a great deal of respect for his skills and his courage as a poet. He could explain love in such simple yet meaningful ways. It's simple enough even my basic Arabic skills are enough to comprehend it. I did have some trouble reading the Arabic in this book because they use his actual handwriting and not typed script, but it's a learning experience. I pick up this book often.
Nizar Kabbani's poetry is simple and elegant. He explores the themes of love, romanticism, seduction, idealism and feminism in his work. I greatly admire Nizar Kabbani's work and am heartened to have such a treasury of his work at my fingertips. The poems are presented both in hand-written Arabic on one page as well as in translated English on the other, which is very helpful to me as a student of Arabic. Nizar Kabbani viewed the treatment of women and sexuality in general in the Arab world as key to social liberation and his poems reflect this view.
Nizar's poetry has already withstood the test of time, and for a reason. He's one of the best love poets ever, and if you're thinking about whether or not to read him, just do it.Regarding this specific book, it's a great collection of love poems that are better translated that I would have thought possible! I'm a native Arabic speaker, but I speak English better, and I wanted the English just as a reference in case I didn't know an Arabic word. The English poems retain most of the beauty, or rather convey the beauty in a new way.I'm already planning on gifting this item to introduce a few people to Nizar.Update: I have no idea why this has doubled in price in the last few yrs. It's still reasonably priced at 16-17 at other bookstores, including Barnes and Noble.

I've never considered returning a cookbook before. I've got probably over 200 at home, and almost every paleo cookbook out there. Each one adds something delightful to my arsenal, so even if I only end up using a handful of recipes out of some of them, I still return to them again and again.I commend the author's journey and work on the cookbook. However, I will not be using it. One quick look through the intro and it becomes clear that the book is not really Whole 30 appropriate. Ex: there is a sandwich recipe with GF bread, and chickpeas. There's a tostada with black beans. There are recipes with dairy. Yes, I'll completely admit that most of the recipes do not contain grains, beans, or dairy. But I don't want to have to comb through a cookbook wondering if I'll be able to make a recipe or not or if "this one" will be one where I have to omit the yummiest part: the dairy. (it just irritates me to no end when cookbooks advertise themselves as one thing and turn out to not be...Whole 30 is unequivocal in stating that no grains, beans, or cheese are allowed.)Also, this seems way more appropriate for someone who is just getting started on their whole food journey. So many of the recipes look so insanely basic that they seem like ones you don't really need a recipe for...unless you're just getting started out with cooking and making food from scratch. A lot of them are things I'd think of as stuff to just throw together and whip up quick off the top of my head, using stuff I had around the house.So, if you don't need to be 100% paleo compliant, if you're just working on prepping more Whole 30 approved meals but still allow foods outside those parameters, and if you're new in the kitchen, then you'll probably enjoy this book.I've been cooking for about 20 years now, and have been strict paleo for about 5. We cook everything from scratch. This cookbook just isn't for us. I need new interesting creative ways to throw ingredients together, as well as more cookbooks that keep with a strict definition of paleo, as opposed to another one where I can't eat many of the recipes because they have inflammatory foods like grains and beans in them.I know there will be many many people who disagree with me on this review. But for whatever it's worth, if you've got years of cooking under your belt already and you also need recipes that follow strict guidelines, you might want to look at this at a bookstore first before deciding if this book will have anything to offer you. I'm sorry for leaving a poor review, I'm sure many people will enjoy this book immensely.
Stop shopping around for the perfect Whole30 cookbook, here it is! I am new to Whole30 and was nervous about books containing recipes that were too complex or ingredients that were too difficult to find but that is not the case with this book. It is AMAZING! The recipes are easy to follow, using ingredients readily found at local markets, and most importantly family friendly! We are so excited to use this book as our first true Whole30 guide (plus some food freedom recipes). If you are even considering Whole30 or simply a healthier relationship with food, you should buy this cookbook. Enjoy!!!
If you like great cookbooks that are fun to read, have great recipes that are easy/healthy and DONT require a bunch of ingredients you haven’t heard of/will only use once/are expensive AND has lots of beautiful pictures (pics for almost every recipe!) - THIS is the cookbook for you! I love this cookbook and Michelle’s approach to food and life. We have several recipes on repeat in our house! You won’t regret buying this!For reference, I love cooking anything by Ina Garten. I love Smitten Kitchen As well.
So I follow Michelle Smith on Instagram and have been a huge fan of her recipes for awhile. I knew I had to order this cookbook as soon as I knew it was coming out. I had high expectations but she exceeded them. There are several things that I always look for in a cookbook but most fall short. NOT this one. It has real recipes, using good clean food, most of which I actually have at my house, the descriptions and recipes are easy to follow, there are pictures of the final product on almost every single recipe, the condiment and sauce chapter is amazing and it lists which category each recipe falls into so I don’t have to figure it out. Aka Whole30, Vegan, Paleo etc. The only problem I’ve come across yet is which recipe to make first because each one looks insane. Michelle poured her heart and soul into this book and it shows. I can’t wait to try everything and gift this book to other food loving friends.
The icon on the book cover says Whole 30 ENDORSED not Approved; apparently there is a difference. I didn't find many Whole 30 recipes but ones that were compliant only if they were modified. Granted there are some Whole 30 recipes but I thought it was a Whole 30 cookbook, particularly since the title is Whole Smiths. I can modify any recipe myself. To add insult to injury, I had to pay the return shipping.
Absolutely love this cookbook!! I have been following Michelle’s blog for a few years now and my family has always enjoyed her recipes. This cookbook has so many easy, delicious recipes that I can’t wait to serve to friends and family! The first night I got the book we made the chimichuri party wings with the crusty cauliflower on the side- my entire family LOVED it! Thank you Michelle for making food exciting AND delicious. Oh and the No’atmeal cookies are absolutely a staple in our house!!

About the Author
Matthieu Ricard received a PhD in molecular genetics from the Pasteur Institute in 1972 before departing his native France to study Buddhism in the Himalayas, eventually becoming a monk of the Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery in Nepal. Renowned also as a photographer and translator, he is the author of numerous previous books, including Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and Your World, Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill, and, with his father, the late Jean-François Revel, The Monk and the Philosopher: A Father and Son Discuss the Meaning of Life. He dedicates all the income of his work to two hundred humanitarian projects run in the Himalaya by the organization he founded, Karuna-Shechen.

A sometimes uncomfortable but excellent book. I ordered this book because I like Matthieu Ricards teachings. A vegetarian a long time ago, I thought I'd read this and not be surprised by much. I was. I also commend the author on presenting the case for a vegan/vegetarian diet with lots of scientific reasoning and studies to back up claims. Knowing the amount of water it takes to produce a quarter pound of beef was astonishing.
This is a great book for vegans and vegetarians (unfortunately, the only folks who will read it). The 4th chapter(which explains how agribusiness works and the suffering of the animals and people working in the business) is a little tough to take.I think it is meant to be that way. All meat eaters should read this book so they know what they are supporting with their actions and money.I like the author's writing and have read a few of his books.
The best historical and moral account on the topic of animal welfare to date. This is a masterful piece of research, exhaustively documented by footnote and citation. Anyone who reads this and continues to participate in the perpetuation of animal cruelty, through the consumption of animal flesh and other "uses" must surely be lost in deep self deception. Thank you, Matthieu Ricard.
I've read many books over the years on this topic, but this one was a bit different. It is more scientifically-based, so many people may find it a bit dry to read, but it's so well researched and eye opening that I really think it's an important book. Some parts were difficult to read, simply because it made me want to cry reading about things that we humans do to animals around the world. While I didn't learn anything new regarding the meat industry, I did learn more about vivisection, bull fighting, and the wild/exotic animal trade, among other things. Ricard covers all angles, making a brilliant case for compassion for animals. There were many quotes that I liked from this book, with my favorite being: "Most of us are fond of animals, but our compassion stops at the edge of our plate." Two thumbs up for "A Plea for Animals..."!

This book is so well written and such humanity shines through in every word. The research is extensive and if you still could do anything to harm animals after reading this, well, I would be amazed.
A must read for anyone who would like to know all the ways we justify our mistreatment of animals.

My daughter's wind ensemble class required Standard of Excellence book for class. We decided to buy this enhanced edition because it came with the CDs and honestly was still less expensive than buying it at our local music store. My daughter said this book is easy to understand and that she likes having the CDs to listen to...it helps her hearing the timing of some of the pieces when she is practicing at home on her own. Her class only has music half the week so a lot of time she's working with this book on her own and it's been a great tool for her.
I learned to play the flute from these books 20+ years ago. I am teaching my youngest to play using this book and it she now almost finished and can play the basics quite well. I have now taken on another friend's kid as a student who will also learn using this book. As long as they practice, and with a little guidance, this book will teach them what they need to know to beging playing the flute.
My daughter lost her flute book for school band. I was happy to find the replacement here.
This is the book my daughter needed for her flute for beginning band. She really likes it and often brings it home for practice. We missed the band night at school, and we live in a small town with no music store, so I was really happy to be able to find this book on amazon.
This is just what we were looking for! It is the same book that is used by our school. I am teaching our daughter at home and re-learning myself. It is easy to understand and practice.

I'm almost ready to return this but due to the $5.99 return fee, I'm on the fence. I have her other cookbooks and have done two Whole30s. I think I'm ready for a change with the format of her cookbooks. The font is a little too small, the ingredient lists are a little too long and it's so unnecessary to say "Whole30-compliant [insert food here]." It makes the ingredient lists seem longer than they have to be and we know, everything needs to be compliant! Our family also doesn't really like Ribs or Roasts so that entire section won't be used. And so many recipes with chicken thighs...not my favorite part of the bird. I know I can sub out, but I just like more options. So many recipes don't even really sound that good, and as I was flipping through came across one recipe that said to brown whatever on the stove first or after slow cooking transfer to a 13x9 dish to broil for 5 minutes. If I'm using a slow cooker or pressure cooker, I'm not going to use a stove too (not to mention that so many slow cookers and pressure cookers have a brown feature so browning on a stove isn't even necessary). These two appliances are supposed to make things easier but this cookbook doesn't really seem to embrace that. I feel like the author tried to force this cookbook to work with a slow cooker/pressure cooker because they are the rave right now, but didn't really write recipes that are easy/quick to prepare. I fully support the Whole30 process and follow a Paleo diet. I was looking for new slow-cooker recipes and was hoping I would find some in this book. Tried several and found them lacking flavor. I expected to find recipes that could be used in either the slow-cooker or Instant Pot. Instead, it's either or. Unless I missed it, I couldn't find directions to adapt the recipes use in the other appliance. Returned the book.
I have bought every Whole30 book/cookbook and this is the first one to disappoint me. I bought this book for recipes that could cook all day while I’m at work, but there are very few 8 hour recipes. Most of them are in the 4 hour range (even on low). The recipes that I tried were just okay.I highly recommend the Whole30 Fast and Easy cookbook, though!
Love love love this cookbook! I've only had it 5 days and already made 3 recipes, all of which my hubby and 3 and 5 year old loved. The recipes are simple, easy to follow, and the ingredients are all things you probably already have in the kitchen. I'm definitely buying extra copies for Christmas presents this year. Thank you Melissa Hartwig and Whole30!!
Great cookbook with a bunch of ways to use our slow cooker or instant pot! Luckily if you have an instant pot you can do every recipe since they do slowcooking and pressure cooking. Loved that not everything was a stew or soup. There is actually a huge salad section surprise!
A good cookbook to add to the rotation with lots of compliant and good recipes for everyday life. One nit: I assumed the recipes would all have Instant Pot variants, but they do not. Maybe half have IP instructions. I still use the recipe ideas but then look to the internet for instructions on how to pressure cook the meat. I wish all had IP instructions.
My favorite Whole30 cookbook yet. All of the recipes sound and look so delicious and everything is done in my favorite appliance- a slow cooker!!! I was hesitant thinking what else could be put in a slow cooker besides roasts and such - well let me tell you. There’s TONS and you need this book to find out what you and a slow cooker are capable of! This book is going to make my me be more prepared during my next whole30 round - and it will make my Food Freedom feel a lot more free!
Tried a couple of recipes as soon as I received the book, and they came out delicious without any modification. One thing to consider is to allow time for preparation. Overall I have been reading through some of the recipes and I know I will be making more dishes from this book every week. I am not doing the Whole30 program, just trying to introduce healthy verity and utilize my slowcooker more often during the week.
